Re: [Chat] fyi crime

2006-07-04 Thread Emily Chalmers
Hi all--

Just thought I'd add that you're not really safe anywhere in Baltimore. I
recently moved to Mayfield, having sold my house in CV for a variety of
reasons, crime among them. I thought I would be safer here.

After moving in, I learned that this house had been broken into less than a
year ago. I keep my Club in the patio door now. I've had to run onto a
stranger's front porch when a suspicious youth headed straight at me while
I was walking down the street two blocks from my house. And then there are
the kids hiding drugs in the alley and the weird-looking guy walking along
the street at 7:30 on Sunday morning who probably left me alone only
because I was wielding a large, heavy shovel . . .

So it goes. Some days I just hope I'll get out of Baltimore alive.

Best,

Emily

Re: [Chat] Need to find a good carpenter

2006-07-04 Thread Emily Chalmers

Expensive but really fine carpenter: Dave Orozco, 443-286-5454

He was referred to me by someone else in CV when I needed to have my original front door rebuilt (after another carpenter ruined it). I should have taken pictures of what Dave did, because it was magnificent. Of course, so was his bill. But if you are looking to restore or maintain original "historic" items, you may want to spend the bucks.

Dave recently took a full-time job, so he would be working outside regular working hours. He may take a while to call back if you don't get him at the first try.

Hello,

I’ve just joined the list, and may have missed any prior advice so please forgive any redundancy.  I am in need of a good carpenter who can help me restore/repair my windows.  I’m trying to avoid replacements and preserve the originals.  When that’s done, I want to get storm windows.  Can anyone give me a good lead?

Thanks,

Re: [Chat] Wanted: Handyman/Carpenter/Advice--recommendations

2006-05-02 Thread Emily Chalmers
Unfortunately I returned to the list a message that was intended for Didon
alone.

However, now that the word is out, I'll list the contractors I've found who
have done really wonderful work. It took me weeks to find this group, so I
hope this listing saves others some time.

Tile: Steve Snyder, Eagle Tile and Marble 443-677-6280. Steve tiled my
kitchen floor, which was very, very uneven. He not only levelled it out but
also did a lovely job with the tile. Total cost with the levelling $1200;
without $800. The old tile was already up, and I bought the new tile and
grout. Steve also redid the lead pan in my 1930s shower, breaking up the
old tile and installing new waterproofing and tile. It looks great. Total
cost $750, including material. Steve is a great guy--just be sure to tell
him to clean up the grout dust and haul away his old tile! He left me with
a bag I can't lift . . .

Flooring: Old World Floors, in the phone book. People in CV have talked
about Bobby Severe for years, and I'm here to say that he is the best. He
refinished all the wood floors in my house, upstairs and down, and repaired
stained and damaged areas. The floors look fantastic. Total cost
$4200--about $1500 a floor and $700 for the stairs. He does repairs at $20
a board. For the record, my house is about 1400 sq. ft., all but the
galley kitchen and baths with hardwood floors. Bobby may charge a bit more
than others, but his work is worth every penny--and he is prompt, pleasant,
and clean.

Electric: Ed and his son at E-Z Electric. I hired them out of the phone
book (they have a display ad). What a relief to find them! They don't
charge by the minute like everyone else, but work on a job-by-basis and
will do very small jobs. They put outlets in my kitchen and redid some of
the wiring before the new appliances were installed. Total cost $650.
They also installed a new base fixture for a ceiling fan in a room where
there had been no light fixture for $350. They are pleasant and prompt and
as noted don't run the meter at $50 every 15 minutes.

Plumber: Lou Mank and his daughter at Charm City Plumbing, also in the
phone book. Lou has been around for years. Not cheap, but very nice to deal
with and very competent. I thought I got a great deal on the two commodes
he replaced for me, as he has to seek out special "thrones" to fit the old
bases--$656 for two, including hauling away the grotesque originals. The
kitchen was not so cheap but required a lot of work.

I also have a good carpenter for small jobs, a great painter, and a
plasterer/mason. However, I am unwilling to divulge their names until they
are done with my house. The carpenter works in the evenings after his day
job, so if you want him you must be ready to give up your evenings. He has
been installing my kitchen and has done an excellent job with the Ikea
cabinets and has made some lovely oak transitions for the floors. The
plasterer redid a bad skimming job for me, but I won't reveal his name
because he might give you the name of the carpenter. Mean, aren't I? The
painter is a very nice, ridiculously reasonable guy who also does faux
finishes. I know he wants more work.

If anyone's interested, send me an e-mail or call me in a few weeks
(410-366-4094) and I will post.

Best,

Emily

NB Here are some contractors to avoid: Mastercraft Construction, Tim
O'Conner Painting, Stephen Scalf Electric, Joe Birch, contractor.
Mastercraft is incredibly expensive, does dishonest estimates, and really
did a terrible job on my kitchen floor; the owner then yelled at me for
half an hour when I criticized his work. Tim O'Conner demanded a huge
deposit, sent over incompetent, really filthy workers to skim the walls,
had his hands all over me one day, and then screamed at me when I told him
his work was bad and I didn't want him to do any painting (I also lost
about $400). Stephen Scalf wanted to do $2,000 worth of unneeded electrical
work. Joe Birch is just plain weird--not unpleasant, just weird.
The world is full of creepy contractors!

Re: [Chat] Wanted: Handyman/Carpenter/Advice

2006-05-01 Thread Emily Chalmers
Hi Didon--

Did you find someone to fix your porch? I have someone who would do a good
job for not too much, but I don't want to give him up until he has finished
with my house. Also, I have found a good plumber (expensive but good),
electricians, a tiler, a painter, and a WONDERFUL floor refinisher. It took
me forever, and I lost money on some real toads, but this group is really
skilled, and they treat me fairly well.

The carpenter just got divorced. :-) More importantly, though, he won't
attack you or do anything weird like, for instance, Chris Jensen, who
grabbed me not once but twice--and I mean grabbed. Too bad it wasn't
someone really cute and sexy. In any case, I will never use Chris as a
plumber again.

BTW, have you thought of having your porch done with Trex or a similar
material that you would never have to worry about? I'm having my cellar
door done in something like that.

Give me a call and we'll discuss "Bill."

Re: [Chat] Roofer

2005-10-12 Thread Emily Chalmers
Jon--

The problem with your roof is that if you have a guarantee, no other
company will want to touch it. If you don't have a guarantee, you should
try to find out how old the roof is and what type it is. Might be time for
a new roof.

I have been having similar problem with Adler Roofing, which replaced my
entire roof about 2 years ago. I have a 10-year guarantee that the company
is not honoring and a contract with some faulty provisions. Recourse for
people like me, and potentially you, is the Maryland Home Improvement
Commission, which investigates complaints and tries to help homeowners, not
contractors. The company you use must have an MHIC number in order to fall
under the commission's jurisdiction; it can't help with other unregistered
contractors.

For example, Adler stated in its guarantee that it was not liable for
internal damage caused by leaky roofs it had installed, but MHIC tells me
that that provision does not hold. All certified companies must have
liability insurance, and MHIC will find out the name of Adler's company for
me so that I can file for return of the money I spend fixing the drywall
damage.

Given what has happened to me, I have determined that it's best to use an
MHIC certified roofer, though I use uncertified people for all sorts of
other things and have been happy with most of them. Lots of people don't
get certified because the process of doing so is expensive and troublesome.

I have a great masonry guy who has taught me more about concrete than I
ever wanted to know. His name is Wayne Crump @ 443-508-6124; he can also
repair roofs (and drywall and a host of other things) but isn't certified.
He's really trustworthy and a fine craftsman--not cheap, but worth the
money.

If you are interested in replacing your roof, you can try Chris Oktavec @
410-335-3737. His company does a lot of different types of work and
specializes in painting--they have done great work for me. Be forewarned:
Chris is a great guy but will talk your ear off. He may also try to give
you some steamed crabs.

Good luck,

Emily Chalmers

Christine--

If the dog is limping, it should be seen by a vet. If the people who have it can foster it, they could work with this group to find it a good "forever" home. In any case, they should call and explain that they found an injured dog. Please give me a call, or have them give me a call, so that I can give them the number.

Thanks.

A black and white spotted dog was found yesterday at the corner of 27th and Calvert.

It has been hit by a car.  It’s limping a little but seems to be OK.

It has a smooth coat and seems to be a Jack Russell mix.

It has a woven cloth collar with lots of colors.

It has been well cared for.

It is at a house in the middle of the 2700 block of Calvert.

Please let me know if you know whose dog this is.

I heard that its owner had to move and gave it to someone in the neighborhood.

RE: [Chat] stolen chair from backyard on the 2600 block of guilford

2005-08-21 Thread Emily Chalmers
This rash of burglaries is depressing, especially since they seem to be
taking place while people are at work and can't do anything about them. I'm
thinking we need to take some action immediately and have two proposals.

First, the CVCBD has a safety team. Much as I support the CVCBD, the Safety
Team has never seemed to me to do much good. However, I'm proposing that we
call Wes Tolbert, who is in charge, and ask him to make sure that the team
patrols Hunter Alley between 25th and 28th regularly--like every half hour.
There's absolutely no reason why they can't do this for two or three weeks.

I'll call Wes tomorrow, but other people should call him as well at
410-235-4411 (not sure what his extension is). It might also be a good idea
to call Janet Levine, the CVCBD director, at the same numbder and tell her
we need daylight security in the alley to stop these thefts.

If our efforts to get the security patrol out don't work (and I'm just
hoping, not holding my breath), I'm wondering if other people would be
willing to pool resources to hire a private security guard for the 2600 and
2700 blocks of Guilford for a while. I've no idea how much it would cost,
but there are a lot of us along the alley. I know people are going to
immediately say that the police and the CVCBD and Hopkins patrols should be
doing this work, but obviously they aren't, and if we can't get them to I
opt for doing whatever we can to show these miscreants that we mean
business.
I may be the lone voice shouting in the wilderness, but it seems like we
have to do something.

Emily

Subject: [Chat] Faux Copper Ceilings

Old House Enthusiasts:

I've created a group list to forward any HGTV show requests looking for houses or products to feature, and I'll gladly welcome anyone else to the list that is interested. They are always looking for new places and people.  It might vary from products you can try out and not keep (say, a $3,000 wurlitzer for CD's), or ones you can (like our new faux copper ceiling).  Either way, its good PR for Charles Village and Baltimore on a national scale.

So, in lieu of an August OHE meeting, you can sit back and catch our faux copper ceiling episode on HGTV's "I Want That!" show next Wednesday, August 24 at 8:30 pm. The show will be aired again Sunday, August 28 at 8:30 pm ET and PT. Don't be fooled by Hollywood; Greg and I only 'acted' the part of installing the ceiling, while reps from the manufacturer actually did the work over two days...They also shot various product how-to's and host wraps in our CV house the following week.

(Since airtimes can occasionally change, you can visit their website http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_hiwt for most up to date information and a full schedule).

[Chat] Kids stealing handbags

2005-07-01 Thread Emily Chalmers

Sheila Rees and I were walking home from Donna's in the 2800 block of St. Paul Street last night about 9:30 when a teenager on a bicycle rode up from behind and grabbed my handbag from me. I was carrying it in my hand, sort of swinging it, and it wasn't hard for him to jerk it loose. He took off down St. Paul, avoided the Neighborhood Walkers, who lunged at him, and got away. The Walkers had 911 on the phone immediately, and they chased the kid all over the 'hood but still haven't caught him. (Thanks to Jeff and Kent, who have been walking their route for years.)

Women beware: don't carry your handbag loosely in your hand!  I learned my lesson. Also, everyone should be aware that a group of kids from the 27th and Guilford/Barclay area has taken to riding around perpetrating crimes like this. They clearly are targeting the retail/restaurant area.

Incidentally we know who this kid is and where he lives. His name is Kevin, and he lives on 27th Street.___

[Chat] BGE outage this Saturday

2005-06-22 Thread Emily Chalmers

After I filed a complaint with the Public Service Commission about the lack
of information on this weekend's outage, I received a call from a gentleman
named Mr. Rolle at BGE. He was very helpful and explained a number of
things I had asked about.

First, the reason for the outages: actually, BGE is trying to help us. Our
grid is being connected to another grid, so that if this one goes down,
power can be restored with what Mr. Rolle described as "the flip of a
switch." He said that this outage should complete the work and be that last
one needed.

Second, he was concerned about the lack of information on several counts. I
explained that tenants weren't getting the information on outages from
landlords and asked if BGE could post information around the neighborhood
when outages were imminent. Mr. Rolle said that possibly no one had
considered that problem and agreed that BGE should look into doing
something about it.

In addition, he said that the letter should have contained a phone number
people who absolutely had to have power could call--for instance, if
someone needed a ventilator. He said he would look into why the information
wasn't in the letter.

Finally, he noted that even he had had to search for the answer to the
question of whether there is a temperature ceiling that would automatically
cancel the outage. There is--90 degrees. However, BGE hopes that it will
not be too hot this Saturday and that all the work can be completed
quickly. Six hours is the outside estimate; the work could be completed
sooner.

I pointed out to him that the problem was simply one of communication and
public relations. Had BGE noted all these things in a well-crafted letter,
people would have baked cookies and made ice tea for the workers. Everyone
would have been happy that something was being done about potential
outages, would have seen that people who needed power had some recourse,
and in general would have put up with the outage without grumbling.
Instead, we received this really crummy letter that said nothing and
contained a major mistake. He concurred and said he would make notes for
future letters.

Hope this information is useful. Please share it with friends and neighbors
and let renters know!

Re: [Chat] BGE outage

2005-06-17 Thread Emily Chalmers

BGE made a mistake in its original letter and says it is sending new ones.

Everyone who is affected will receive a letter. If you don't receive one, you're OK. My grid seems to end at 28th and to run from at least St. Paul over into Harwood.

I wouldn't mind living without BGE in a hospitable climate where I was set up to do so. I too get tired of the constant noise pollution. I have a neighbor who power washes her house every weekend and sometimes on week nights.

RE: [Chat] BGE outage--6, not 30 hours

2005-06-17 Thread Emily Chalmers

BGE states that the planned outage is 6 hours, not 30, and that new letters are being prepared telling affected customers that.

I was unable to learn whether BGE has a temperature ceiling that would automatically cancel the outage, but I plan to call the PUC and ask if there is one.

Sarah, for the record, although I told BGE about the couple next door, the rep did not inform me of any alternative plans for people like them. The letter I received also offered no information about any alternatives. I therefore deduce that BGE doesn't have any.

And yes, in this case I would go to a motel if the temperatures were high. I don't know where you live, but I have no cross-breezes, and the upstairs rooms are quite simply stifling.  I have an elderly cat and another that gets ill in heat waves, and I am not young. Rather than make us all ill, I would move out and am grateful that I have that alternative.

I am also fed up with these "planned outages," which have become a regular event. For what I pay BGE, I expect decent service.

This is certainly a big inconvenience, but 30 hours is basically just a day.  Most people should be able to handle a day without electricity (barring the rare medical condition that requires electrical equipment, but BGE has solutions, such as back-up generators, for those needs).
Emily, do you really need to go stay in a motel?  Our homes in CV are built for thorough cross ventilation, hence the transoms and multiple windows on either end of the house.  The front porches are designed for breezes to cross through them.  Air conditioning was non-existent when the houses were built, and people seemed to survive okay then.
It would definitely be a hassle to not have my daily conveniences such as air conditioning, fans, and electric stove for 30 hours, but I think I'd manage through it.

Christine, I personally am enraged. The outage affects several streets--including St. Paul--south of 28th. I'm not sure if affects some areas of Harwood, as well. I wonder if anyone at BGE realizes how hot these rowhouses get.  Here are some of the people who would be affected:

Next door to me are an elderly disabled couple. The man can barely get down the stairs, and the wife has a heart condition.

Across the street is a woman with 4 small children. Down the street is a group home that relies on an elevator to get residents in and out of the dwelling.

The inconvenience to me is nothing compared to the danger a 30-hour outage poses to these folks. I have enough money to take my cats and go stay in a pet-friendly motel. However, I feel like suing BGE, but you can't sure people just for being jerks.

If you are affected by the outage, please call both BGE and the Public Service Commission, which is responsible for overseeing public utilities. I talked with them about the last outage, which thankfully was cancelled because of rain and rescheduled for a later date. But it was only a few hours, and the weather was not hot then.

NB, in my increasingly long life I have lived in many places around the world. Nowhere other than Baltimore have a ever heard of a "planned power outage," and never have I been asked to go for 30 hours without power except during an emergency when power was interrupted. What do other people think?

John--

I don't mean to be testy, but we are NOT a developing country. The
comparison doesn't work. And what precisely do you propose my disabled
neighbor do when the temperature in the upstairs of his rowhouse where he
is currently confined rises above 90 degrees and he can't even plug in a
fan? Go sit on the curb?

We had a power outage in this grid about 3 months ago. At this point, I am
interested to see a breakdown of BGE outages by grid and to find out when
and how BGE determined where points requiring "major" servicing would be
situated.

I personally am NOT grateful for BGE. BGE and Verizon are the two best
excuses for deregulation I have ever seen, and generally I am opposed to
deregulation. I have managed to end all contact with Verizon, but thus far
I have been unable to generate my own electricity.

[Chat] Cheap annuals at Safeway

Gardening mavens--

On Tuesday evening, Safeway had six-packs of annuals for $1.99. A great deal! There were some nice-looking vinca, impatiens, petunias, salvia, marigolds, and begonias. (Sadly, the white verbena had powdery mildew.)  They were in two places: around the plant kiosk near the door and on a big table back by the photo counter.

RE: [Chat] lilies deadly to cats

2005-05-15 Thread Emily Chalmers

Christine--

the literature I've read emphasizes that lilies--at least some types, including day lilies--are poisonous to cats and that renal failure is one possible result of ingesting the toxins. It may be that some cats are more sensitive to the toxins than other cats are. For instance, some cats react to vaccines. Of my three cats, two are fine with leukemia vaccinations, and one--who ironically is much larger than the other two--nearly became comatose after the last one and won't have more of those shots, though he's OK with other vaccines. Then I have a friend whose cat can't have any vaccinations at all. So you never know.

However, I have been reading about the problems workers in the ornamental flower industry in some countries are having with the massive amounts of pesticides used to produce attractive blooms. I believe Mexico was one of the countries mentioned. What I read startled me so much that I stopped buying ornamental flowers altogether, because my cats also chew on those, and I like to smell them.

Thus I think it's hasty to blame the cat's death solely on the lilies. It seems to me that even if that particular cat was extremely sensitive to the toxins in those lilies,  it could have ingested pesticide residue. Or a combination of both could have been responsible. I'm just theorizing, because I don't think one can be careful enough these days with chemicals and toxins and so on.

Speaking of which, I just bought a new microsuede couch, and it has that awful smell that new synthetic carpeting often has. Does anyone know what kind of toxin my cats and I are breathing now? Will the smell go away?

Thanks!

Emily

What concerns me is something that is not mentioned in the article--the issue of pesticides and other sprays that are used with ornamental flowers.  I have read about the problems with workers in other countries because of the gross overuse of pesticides. But although the plant is potentially deadly to cats, it is not thought to affect other pet species.
Alex Campbell, a toxicologist and managing director of the National Veterinary Poisons Information Service, said: "No-one really knows what the toxic mechanism of lilies is, but it is something in the plant that causes the tubular cells in the kidneys to die.
"It appears that it is just cats that are susceptible. They have a slightly odd metabolism compared to other animals - lacking certain enzymes - and this seems to make them especially vulnerable."
He added: "It may be useful to introduce a label warning of the effect these flowers can have on cats, but it is important not to become alarmist and to use common sense."

RE: [Chat] Waverly Giant vs Safeway (25ht and Charles)

2005-01-22 Thread Emily Chalmers
Brad--

The Safeway has always been overcrowded and understaffed, but I don't think
your experience last night was representative. I was at the Home Depot in
Towson, and it was a madhouse--I was grateful not to need to visit a
grocery store. And the last time I was at the Safeway, I was worried about
the lack of customers. I was in and out in record time.

I am loyal to that Safeway, because it opened here long before the
Giant--responding to the rising property values--came in and tore down all
those houses to build a suburban-style eyesore. I've lived in other
inner-city areas, and Safeway often seems to me the only pretty decent
grocery willing to open stores in those areas. And of course I am a crank
about that Giant--it simply wasn't necessary to insist on a parking lot
that size. I believe the store should have gone with an urban model,
smaller and with the parking lot on top. That said, I also don't have the
time to spend wandering a warehouse-size store looking for things I need.
and I don't see that it has anything the Safeway doesn't.

However, my primary consideration is just the fact that the Safeway was
here when the houses in Chuck Village were selling for $75K years ago, and
the Giant didn't show up until they started selling for more than $200K. I
want the Safeway to stay in business, and it has tried hard to bring in
more healthful and upscale items (soy milk and Starbucks coffee, i.e.).
What has the Giant done for me except expect that I'll be entranced by its
size? Sorry--I'll take the sometimes overcrowded Safeway any time.

I hope other people will stick with the Safeway too. Losing it would be a
real blow.

RE: [Chat] Firebombing at Edna McAbier's house

2005-01-17 Thread Emily Chalmers
In the interest of security, it would be best not to theorize on any of the
chat lists about whose house was firebombed.

We can refer to the victim as "our neighbor," which is certainly what the
victim is--the house is all of two blocks from mine.
