Chad,

I haven't used him personally and he's not in Charles Village, but my
brother went to Dr Bruce Beacham (410-583-2328) for a melanoma and he was
fantastic. My brother was in pretty tight financial straits at the time
and Dr Beacham's office really did a lot to help him find ways to pay for
treatment and get discounts on the post-surgery drug regime.

Re: [Chat] taxes

2012-02-02 Thread Eric Dymond
There's also a hefty surcharge if you want to pay any taxes with a credit
card, rather than a check. A merchant usually eats the 3% or so that the
credit card company charges, but the government wants (and is probably
legally required) to get the full amount.

I just looked, and I paid $63.55 each year since 2009 for Turbo Tax. That

again this year.. So I paid about what you paid.

Since you have a house, my guess is that you itemize deductions and cannot
get by with a more stripped-down version.

One trick that goes with all of the tax preparation software is that they
will try to persuade you when you are ready to e-file to get your refund
immediately instead of waiting a week or two. If you fall for it, you
will pay an interest rate that is really out of sight. Tax refund
anticipation loans are a bad deal for consumers, but they bring in a lot of
money for companies that provide tax software. I know that you will not
fall for it, but I mention this for the benefit of others on the chat and
 discussion lists.

Re: [Chat] Radiators

2012-01-19 Thread Eric Dymond
If they're bubbling/gurgling, the condensed steam may not be draining back
to the boiler. The end of the radiator opposite the incoming pipe (assuming
it's single pipe) should be elevated slightly so it can drain back.
The steam vents do need to be tuned properly so that air is purged from the
radiator and it fills up with steam. If it vents too quickly, the hot
steam isn't able to fill the radiator, condense and release heat. If it
vents too slowly you're spraying steam into the room. Non-functioning
vents (either open or closed) need to be replaced. Also, radiators will
require different sized vents depending on the size of the radiator and how
far they are from the boiler (assuming you don't have a main vent).

In short, it's sort of voodoo and it's best to hire someone to do it,
rather than doing it yourself. I haven't really found anyone that I'd
recommend. It's really a terrible way to heat a house.

  Is it steam or hotwater?

If hotwater, get a radiator key from the hardware store to turn the
valve. It costs very little. Bleed the radiator of the air that has
accumulated. Have a bowl with you to catch the water that will come out
after the air is drained but before you retighten the valve. Start with
the one furthest from the furnace.

I think you'd be better off upgrading your insulation, rather than ventilating
your attic. Keep in mind that if you have knob and tube wiring you can't place
insulation over it, as it violates fire code. The aluminized or white roof
paint also helps quite a bit.
