Re: [Chat] Ruby Tuesdays is closed
Friends & Neighbors of Charles Village Is it francise restaurants that are floundering in Charles Village, or is it the economy? As you know Calles on Saint Paul closed a couple of weeks ago. Calles had excellent food, a little too pricey--and some can say that it was in an area that is in transition. In the case of Calles, it was in an area that does not draw any tourist trade and does not draw support from JHU. (other restaurants are struggling as well) !!! Business is a very challenging in todays economy. You could have a great product, great service and affordable prices--but still struggle. City, State and Federal taxes & regulations only put the icing on the cake and cause you to fail -- or like myself, your bank could deal you a bad hand (or raw deal) and put your business and life into a tail spin. On the news, all you hear is how government is going to improve the economy and create more jobs. The truth of the matter is that government & bank regulations continue to kill the economy. Businesses and the average citizen are hesitant in spending -- and in most cases we don't have anything left to spend. Please continue to support the LOCAL economy -- avoid purchasing from the internet if your needs are locally available. This is a real problem in our neighborhood: I am a resident of Charles Village and every day I commute around lunch time south on St. Paul. On dozens of occasions, I have had JHU students walk right in front of my car, even though I have a green light and they have a 'Don't Walk' sign. The most egregious locations are at 33rd by the Barnes and Noble and 31st Street by Donna's. I purposely drive below the speed limit in these areas as I have had a few close calls. Today was the worst, as thank goodness my car has great brakes, preventing me from hitting three Hopkins students who walked right in front of my car while laughing the entire time as their friends laughed and shouted at them to run across the street. JHU students need to be reminded that Charles Village is not their 'campus,' nor are they in a small New England town ... they are in a large metropolitan city and their campus is in the heart of it. I have lived in Charles Village for 8 years and have had mostly positive experiences with JHU students but this is a real problem. Their safety is being put at risk, and I am in jeopardy of being involved in a horrific accident just because they cannot seem to follow a simple "Walk/Don't Walk" sign, despite their near perfect SAT scores. Dear Charles Village Friends: I only wish that I could put the right words together, but basicly the neighborhood needs to support LOCAL INDEPENDENT BUSINESES. Eddies, Donna's, Graphic Imaging, and others that I cannot think of at the moment. BUYING LOCAL puts dollars back into the local economy. Chains & Francises send their dollars to their headquarters based in other states. I want to thank everyone in the community that has their printing & graphic design done at Graphic Imaging, Inc. When Ledo first opened, there was talk of an Indian restaurant but no name for ne. That would have made much more sense. Maybe the Ledo franchisee got tired of paying for unused space, and Quiznos, eing available to fill the space, made more business sense in so far as it ould pay some rent. That is all that I can imagine. But why would Quiznos ant to open next to Ledo? When I think of the places that have failed in that double space (Homewood eli including Silber's Bakery, P J Henry, and the burger joint whose original re later names escape me at the moment), I wonder if we are going to see nother business failure there. Thank you Matthew! Although $600.00 is expensive--if CV bought $50.00 cans, they would be stiolen or blown away every week -- realizing that they are on the streets 24 / 7. At $50.00 each per week, it would be $2600 for one location per year -- or if one disappeared per month, it would be $600.00 per year. You do the math -- and thank you for buying USA. I don't know about everyone else, but I do not want to see beat up trash cans blowing around Charles Village. I am not an eliteist, but I do appreciate a vibrant-clean neighborhood. Do you remember the free cans that the City gave away 3 years ago--as we can see, they have all disappeared. As I see the examples on the web page, there are opportunities for signage on the cans to either promote the neighborhood or to sell advertising to local companies. I'm sure it's possible to find ones made in Asia for a fraction of the price (www.nytimes.com/2007/11/26/nyregion/26manhole.html tells the story of how New York City began buying manhole covers made in India because they were so much cheaper), but you would be against that, right? I'm sure it's also possible to find lower quality ones that won't last as long, but then you're pushing the CVCBD to be penny-wise and pound-foolish because they'd probably end up paying more in the long run. Can you show that similar institutions are able to purchase American-made, high-quality trash cans for less? If not, then I don't understand why you're complaining. -Matthew -Original Message- From: jberlin To: David Hill ; Tweefie Millspaugh ; The Charles Village Chat List ; Charles Village Discussion List ; Mary Pat. Re: [Chat] [Discussion] sun plus
What I am about to say may be against many opinions, but the SunPlus paper sustains local jobs in the community. It does not hurt the environment, because it is printed on re-cycled paper. It helps the local economy by featuring businesses and organizations in the Baltimore area--not businesses from other states or other countries like the Internet does. Think of it as junk mail if you will, but it helps the working class during these tough economic times. Happy New Year Richard Burnham (an environmentally conscious printer in Charles Village). First--my condolences. If you are considering a printed program, please give Graphic Imaging, Inc. a call. We can do something simple or more elaborate, as needed. Funeral homes can also provide programs, but at a increased price. I can guarantee that you will be pleased with the results and the price. There was an article in one of the news magazines a couple of years ago about cutting funeral costs. The main points were: order the coffin directly online (the funeral home must accept it), and don't pay extra for special metal liners, evidently embalming is a major expense and unnecessary; unless it's open casket, and order all flowers yourself to avoid "middle man" mark-up's, which can be sizeable. It's an emotional time, but the article stated that you could save hundreds to thousands of dollars following these steps. Hope this helps. Re: [Chat] bad contractors?
If in doubt & no matter how believable or how well known they are; 1) You also need to see if they are licensed & insured. 2) ALWAYS check with the Better Business Bureau. Go to _www.baltimore.bbb.org_ (http://www.baltimore.bbb.org) The same thing applies when having printing done. There is an online printing business (Vista Print) that does about a Billion $$ of business a year, but if you check them out with the BBB, they have a bad reputation. Besides from a lot of their work being done in other country's, they are also headquartered in another country, therefore they pay no taxes to the USA. Re: [Chat] Two Sisters Grille; Signatures
Hi Neighbors, I want to differ. Most businesses that I talk with are down 30 to 60%. Expenses are up drastically, and sales are down considerably. The economy SUCKS! Many small businesses are considering themselves lucky if they are breaking even; but most are losing money, dipping into personal savings, maxing out credit cards, insurance policies, etc. Yesterday I spoke with my accountant, lawyer and banker. Everyone stated that many of their business clients are experiencing hardship. With my company Graphic Imaging, business this year has been tough. We are hoping that September will bring opportunities, but there are no guarantees. One thing that you can do to help, is to BUY LOCAL. Independent businesses are experiencing tough times. For example, many people are making off shore companies Multi-Multi-Millionaires by using the Internet. For example: Vista Print had sales of $408,000,000 as of July 08'. Most people are not aware of how companies like this are affecting the local economy here in the USA. Most of the orders that they receive are under $100.00, but larger orders are leaving the country as well. Do your self a favor and check out the BBB (Better Business Bureau) to see how ethical (or un-ethical) a company is that you are making a purchase from. For more information about BUY LOCAL, please go to _www.buylocalbaltimore.com_ (http://www.buylocalbaltimore.com) . There is a preferred list of local companies on this local site for you to work with, that would appreciate your support. Thank You: Richard Burnham Graphic Imaging, inc. Hi-- I have also looked at the SW site. There is an interior version--but it is definitely for exterior as well. When you Google, type in: Sherwin Williams Exterior Duration I used it last year on my front railings & door at my home in Reisterstown. I have never had a product apply as well. It looks as good today as the day I applied it. I plan on using it here at my business also. Richard GRAPHIC IMAGING, INC. Re: [Chat] house colors
Hi Christine, I have recently experienced using a Sherwin Williams product called Duration. It goes on absolutely fantastic and covers absolutely GREAT! It is moderately expensive, but it is worth it. It is guaranteed not peel, fade, etc. It is self priming, but it is recommended to prime any bare wood. The normal requirements of removing any loose paint still applies. It is noted that this is new technology and it is actually not a paint. I am VERY happy with the product. There is a Sherwin Williams store at Falls Road & Cold Spring across from POLY. It is located behind the shopping area. (I suppose that is the North East corner. I do not know their hours--(call first). They can mix any color that you want. Good luck on painting your award winning Painted Lady. Best Wishes: Richard Burnham GRAPHIC IMAGING, INC. No, just be sure that they are not electrical. I have a 14' & 24' extension ladder--but what I think you are looking for is the free standing type that you do not have to prop up against something. Call Liesje Gantert at the VLP on Monday. The ladder that they have is 14 foot. The other alternative that I have is a tree trimmer that is on an extension pole. It extends to about 15 feet. The current bill is now $500.00 which I paid two days ago. I called to find out what I could do and to prove my consistency with paying parking ticket through out the years. I was told that there was nothing they could do unless I wanted to request a trial and in the mean time the ticket would go up $16.00 a day and if the police find your car they will boot it and tow it! The trial does not mean you will get the $500.00 waved. They informed me that people will take tickets off of your car and put them on their own so they don't get a ticket. Then they will throw them away. Okay I thought, Well they must have more important things to do like finding people that are committing violent crimes, but that doesn't seem to be the case!!! Regardless, I wanted to let people know that they should check on their cars for current tickets that you may not have received. Recent CV robberies have been at gunpoint and knifepoint. According to the police spokesman, Sterling Clifford, "In the case of the nonlife-threatening injury, it is not unusual for the detective not to respond to the scene." Detectives did not interview Benjamin Treat until 35 hours after the stabbing, and then only after he and his mother called several times. Re: [Chat] roofer needed
Hi Christine: Earlier this year I contacted Fick Roofing who is on 25th Street. The reason that I contacted them was the fact that they won the Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Ethical business practices and they are local. I thought "This is great--finally I can do business with someone that I can trust. One problem was that they quoted me a price of $75,000.00 which is way above my league. Fick also quoted a new roof for my home in Reisterstown, which they quoted $45,000.00. I had it done for $7,500.00. The company that did my home did a great job but does not do flat roofs, sorry to say. FYI: The rubber roof is the way to go. The white is a coating that is applied after the roof is replaced. Who ever you come up with, go on line to _www.baltimore.bbb.org_ (http://www.baltimore.bbb.org) (Better Business Bureau) to see if the roofer has any complaints filed against them. Re: [Chat] It's worth a try
Dear Judy, Un-like home/office printers, cartridges for all of my equipment has to be bought from the manufacturer (actually it is part of my service agreements), in my case: Xerox & Konica Minolta. Generic brands are not available for Digital Presses, but even if there were it would void any service policies and warrantees as well as the quality would not be acceptable. Offset presses use conventional ink, ink is somewhat universal in that there are about a half dozen manufacturers (previously 12 or more) in the Mid-Atlantic area. Even that, there are several different formulations for the type of press and type of stock that is being used. Sorry to bore you with printing info, but it may be interesting to note that digital printing at Graphic Imaging, Inc. does not use ink, therefore we are not dependant on the oil companies other than getting to work and delivering our work to customers in our autos as well as for energy to heat & cool our building. FYI: I only use BP whenever available (SEE YOU THERE) --although the Exxon dealer at Howard & 25th does offer good mechanical services. Have a great day--- Richard Burnham Graphic Imaging, Inc. Re: [Chat] It's worth a try
In my opinion, to boycott a company, you would only be hurting the local small business owner. It would have no impact on the big corporation. But if it makes you feel better, go for it. It would be like me NOT wanting to use my Xerox Digital Presses one day and only running my work on one of our Konica Minolta Digital Presses on that day. "Xerox could care less". Re: [Chat] Motor Bikes -watch out!
Hi All: Saturday afternoon around 3-o'clock on 25th Street is a real spectacle of speeding dirt bikes. It is amazing that there has not been a serious accident. One night around 8:00PM was a real surprise when I was leaving the shop from my front door, a dirt bike came speeding up the sidewalk in front of my building and made a left turn down the sidewalk on Saint Paul. I am sure he was at the Inner Harbor before the Police got here. Now I know why the sidewalks are handicapped accessible at intersections. "They help the dirt bikes have a smoother ride." Re: [Chat] Charles Village Crime Alerts
Hello Everyone: I know that I am not the expert on reducing crime--otherwise I would not have personally experienced problems myself. (For example: over the past couple of years--my front windows being shot out, personally threatened by knife point, my tires slashed, car windows smashed, my building graffittied several times, flower pots stolen, nearly $5,000 worth of personal property including cameras, tools, ladder etc. stolen; and just last weekend I was victim of four 12 -14 year old punks throwing rocks at my car, my building and myself. During the rock throwing insident, I called 911 and the lady asked for my name, address and phone number 3 times--which by that time, I said forget it--the punks were to North Avenue and the Police would be waisting their time to come. With all of the crime in the area, I received notice from the Police department that if my alarm system sounded one more time, I will be faced with a $50.00 fine and up to $1400.00 after 14 times. If the area was safe, I would not need an alarm system--but the City uses crime to create a revenue source. A few false alartms are inevitable-- therefore I am punished for trying to protect my property. I suppose that my secret to survival (and that is pretty much what we do) is to look out for my neighbors and they look out for us. In regards to my good friend Sharon stating that the CVCBD is budget is putting more money into clean up rather than crime, my comment is that the clean team and safety team are working in all areas of Charles Village on a daily basis, therefore there are more eyes and ears on the streets than ever before. Is that enough?--"NO". Although the surtax will not be increased with this budget, in my PERSONAL OPINION the surtax would have to be increased in the future to have the security needed to help control the crime, particularly in Hargrove, Old Goucher and the West side. Should there be more POLICE presence---ABSOLUTELY YES! Many of my neighbors complain that the CVCBD is not doing enough. I pay about $230.00 to the CVCBD Surtax, compaired to the $5,000.00 "PLUS" that I pay to the City for taxes. "Shouldn't we be getting more police support from the City"? Please note that the CVCBD Board meeting next Tuesday is a very important one iin many ways. Not only will the budget be voted up or down, but we will have an opportunity to hear from The Central Baltimore Partnership. If they are successful, there will be significant improvement to the area from Penn Station to 25th St. ---which will have tremendous positive effects well beyond that area. We need to increase patrols both by the CVCBD team and by Northern District. We need coordination between the CVCBD and the Northern District. We need the CVCBD Safety team to assist in educating us on the best crime prevention techniques and safety precautions. At the CVCBD Budget hearing on March 13 David Hill, Executive Director, confirmed that these things would continue to be done. We also need to do our part by becoming block leaders for the CVCBD and block watchers for the Northern District. The proposed budget and the presentation on the Financial Plan for Fiscal Year 2008 are both available online at the website www.charlesvillage.org . Re: [Chat] Two Sisters Grille is a success!
Thanks Emil for promoting our local businesses. The 2 Sisters must have worked all night. When I went there for lunch at 4:00PM yesterday, it looked like it would be 3 more weeks before their opening. I want to wish everyone in the neighborhood a Merry Christmas, and a Wonderful Holiday Season. Best Wishes: Richard Burnham Graphic Imaging, Inc. Trivia Question: What was the name of the restaurant that occupied the 2 Sisters building in the 80's. I recall that it was very popular with business people for lunch, and the food was very good--but I cannot remember the name. ___ Chat mailing list Chat@charlesvillage.info http://charlesvillage.info/mailman/listinfo/chat_charlesvillage.info

Just think how neat it would be to drive it in the Charles Village Parade. It would surely win 1st prize if we decorated it as a giraffe. Re: [Chat] [Discussion] Long Goners
Hi Brad: RE: Krug on Saratoga Street I had the sign bracket that the CVCBD sign hangs from (that I designed), made at Krug. Their history goes back to not only doing a lot of work in Baltimore, but much of the ornamental ironwork in New Orleans. I believe that they did the Iron work on my property of Graphic Imaging, Inc., 107 East 25th Street. Re: [Chat] Jonathon
