Hi Cathy,

If you still have a green bean seedling, I'd be happy to give it a home in
my garden.

Hi,

My daughter and I planted more seedlings than we can use for our deck
garden. Please let me know if you might be interested in seedlings:
(3)
pickling-style cukes (ORGANIC Burpee), (7) Summer Squash (Burpee), (6)
bush

style green beans (Burpee). I could leave them out on the front porch for
pickup.

2012-04-09 Thread Goucher
Yes, the fire house on 3123 Greenmount reopened after an extensive
renovation and currently houses Engine 31 and Medic 3. Truck 7 was also
housed there until 2001 when they were permenently closed. The city
shudders companies from houses with multiple units so the locals in that
neighborhood don't "feel" unprotected.

[Chat] Have you heard the news?

2012-04-09 Thread Goucher
Hi, everyone,

More likely than not, you have heard the woefully brief coverage of the latest
round of fire company closings slated for July 1, 2012.

THESE CHANGES WILL DIRECTLY AFFECT YOU, YOUR PROPERTIES, AND SAFETY!

Among those companies to be closed is Truck 15 located on Montford Avenue (East
Baltimore, just north of JHU Medical campus). This will necessitate Engine 33
being PERMANENTLY MOVED to that station house and NO LONGER SERVING THE GREATER
CHARLES VILLAGE/BARCLAY/HOMESTEAD areas. While Engine 31 will remain in place,
thanks in large part to the wonderful efforts of local politicians, your next
closest Engine Company, #33, will be leaving the area. Response times for
emergencies- fire and otherwise- WILL GO UP. The current station housing
Engine 33, at 25th and Kirk Avenues, will still be open, but will only house a
Truck Company #5.

So, if you are concerned about the City's continuing efforts to close fire
companies, permanently move others, and, overall, to understaff the fire
department- YOUR DEFENSE AGAINST FIRES THAT CAN AND DO HAPPEN QUICKLY IN TURN
OF THE CENTURY ROWHOMES- than please make some noise and let City Hall- the
Mayor and your Councilperson- know how you feel.

Yes, we as a family have a personal stake in the matter, with Jason having
worked in the BCFD for eighteen years, but, you and your family do, too!
During his time in the Department, we have seen A DOZEN companies cut.

More importantly, collectively, Charles Villagers have already sacrificed their
safety in recent past with the permanent closures of Truck Co. 7 (formerly at
3123 Greenmount), Truck Co. 9 (formerly on Roland Ave. in Hampden) and Engine
Co. 19 (formerly at Guilford & Mt.Royal Aves.). Is there another neighborhood
in the City that has sacrified so greatly? Not sure, but it begs the question.

We pay an awful lot in taxes, but are being asked yet again to sacrifice more
safety to the City's budget woes. And the C.V.C.B.D. can't make up for this
one folks. Here's more:

http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-04-05/news/bs-md-ci-clack-closures-20120405_1_fire-chief-james-clack-fire-companies-fire-stations

We use Vietnam Veterans of America reliably and are now on their periodic call

Does anyone have any recommendations of how to donate clothes? Tried the
shelter on St Paul and they are not interested. Tried Purple Heart and they
never came today after we drug out all the boxes last night. Called and they
said if they cannot see it from the street they don't stop. As you all know in
Charles Village our built-up porches make it impossible to see something from
the street unless I put it on the steps where inevitably people would rummage
through it. So need an organization that actually knows what they are doing.

early in the morning? The law prohibits the private trash truch from

My name is Marigold. I am a personable and lovable 2 and a half year old 71 lb.
beauty: part lab, part American bulldog, part boxer and part pit. I am
energetic - I love to go on walks, take long hikes in the woods and play ball.
I will bond with you and therefore will not want to share you with other dogs
or young children in a home. Cats are OK by me (see below). I like playing with
other dogs when I am out. I think that I am a lapdog and will greet you
enthusiastically by jumping up to kiss you, but I am very smart and will
respond to more training.

I am crate trained but when my humans are home, I like to be with
them. I have a crate, leashes, dishes, toys and other supplies. My medical
records are up to date. My family can't keep me due to their health issues, but
they wouldn't take me to a shelter. So now I am living in a kennel and I am
very sad because I want to be in a home. If you can give me the attention I
need, I would be so happy to be your loving and loyal companion!

2010-12-19 Thread Goucher
I agree, their treatment was not good. The young pin oaks, which did not need
to be trimmed at all, took a particular beating. However, the bradford pear in
front of our house was desperately in need of having its bottom branch removed
before it fell off and onto someone, so grateful to see that one trimmed. I
sadly can't imagine that proper training is high on the budgeted priority list-
not an excuse, just a sad reality.

Was anyone else bothered by the butchering of trees on their block in CV.

Yesterday, three city employees were hacking at the tree in the well in front
of my house. These people obviously knew/know nothing about tree pruning.

After finishing with that one-and removing major limbs-they went to the next
and took off every branch except those at the very top. The tree looks comical
now, like something out of Dr. Seuss with a top knot.

They kept on up the block and across the street.

Peter, are these people given any instruction on how to prune a tree? And I
don't think December is the time of year to prune.

  Thank you,

if you see her, she is a dark tabby cat with splashes of white on her face, a
stubby tail, and a white tummy that sways when she walks. Most concerning to

[Chat] welcoming spring and the return of the brazen season of prostitution

2010-03-20 Thread Goucher
Hi, all-

I know that I have sought advice from the group before about how to proceed
with letting the appropriate authorities know of prostitution in front of my
house, but I am in needing of reminding about who in the City to contact. Very
early this morning, two provocative "women" were on the corner of 27th and
Calvert, and one ran screaming up and down 27th around 4 am (it remains unclear
as to why). I have called 911 and 311 in the past about the activity, which
goes inside (perhaps in one of the rentals next door) during the colder months,
but returns to the open air as the weather warms. It is unsettling to say the
least and I'd like to get the proper authorities on it ASAP. Thanks for any
productive information you might send my way... I am not looking for debate on
prostitution, the part it plays in drug or gang activity, etc., just contacts
in the City to address the issue, thanks.

Good afternoon, all-

City Neighbors Charter School, on Raspe Avenue in the Northeast corner of the

from 7-9:30. There is live music, light fare, beer and wine, a silent auction,
and a 50/50 raffle all to benefit the school.

Jason and I already bought tickets and are unable to use four, which is its own
table. They are already paid for, all you need to do is go, take money to
support the school through the raffle and silent auction items, and have fun!
Please let me know if you would be interested in the 4 tickets. First come,

[Chat] Target West and The Parkside Restaurant

2008-12-20 Thread JASON GOUCHER
Hi, everyone-

Just wanting to share with folks my recent good experiences at both the new
Target in Mondawmin and at The Parkside Restaurant, recently opened on Harford
Road.

First the Target- been there twice now and the customer service couldn't be
better. Stopped in at two different times- once it was quiet, had just opened
for the day; the other time, today, it was bustling, but STILL great service
and a well-cared for store. Felt very safe (obvious police presence both
times), parking was fantastic, particularly compared to the dreadful parking at
the Towson Target, and was there in about 10 minutes from home! What an asset
to the City!

Went with the family to Parkside Restaurant tonight for the first time and sat
in the "children's section," where we had a DELICIOUS meal, for a very
reasonable price, and watched the kids have a blast in the play area fully
stocked with toys, a fun raised platform area, perfect for meal time
performances from creative kids, and it was cordoned off so we didn't need
worry about escapees while we dined! The manager stopped by the table and
welcomed usLOVELY time!

Just wanted to share some holiday joy experienced, delightfully, without a trek
to a surrounding county! Happy Holidays, everyone, and here's hoping these
City gems and those like them remain and prosper in the New Year!

  Hi all,

Tuesday evening, April 22, at 6:30 pm St. John's Church (3009 Greenmount) is
hosting the annual Baltimore "Blue Mass," a community-wide service of prayer
for police, fire-fighters, and paramedic teams of Baltimore City.

Several city officials and members of these units will be in attendance, and
there will be a reception following the service to honor their service to the
community. (N.B. The church asks that this be a purely religious occasion for
offering prayers and support, not political statements.)

Whatever your religious affiliation or lack thereof, this service will offer
beautiful music and an uplifting spirit for the community in the form of a
traditional Episcopal Mass.

We'd like to invite the whole community to attend. Please see the attached
flier if you are interested and let me know (or contact the church) if you have
any questions.

  Yours,

  Drew

Re: [Chat] Assessment notices...nothing like it for rousing New Year cheer

2008-01-01 Thread JASON GOUCHER
Good morningthanks, gentlemen, for your opening discussion comments. I
remain unclear, however, as to how land value alone could have climbed from 30
to 40 K three years ago to 140 K in this latest assessment. Again, Calvert St
offers no beautiful water view, quiet cul-de-sac, bucolic vistas, etc..
I did appeal an assessment two cycles ago and won. At the time, in referencing
the property worksheet I was sent, I found errors with regard to the number of
bathrooms and kitchens assigned to the home, as well as made the case then for
the noise and pollution factors impacting my home due to location.
Despite the property values having risen in recent years in CV (and, yes, I
would imagine the rising assessments as having the potential to negatively
impact future home sales in the area), I continue to feel unshaken in my
resolve to appeal...

According to www.dat.state.md.us, here are all the sales on Abell Avenue
(where I live) in 2007:
  DateAddress Price
  10/17/07 3042 ABELL AVE 0
  10/10/07 3019 ABELL AVE 275,000
  9/25/07 3107 ABELL AVE 280,000
  8/20/07 3245 ABELL AVE 275,000
  8/17/07 3028 ABELL AVE 264,000
  8/16/07 3309 ABELL AVE 283,000
  8/16/07 3307 ABELL AVE 174,900
  7/25/07 3307 ABELL AVE 140,000
  7/23/07 3236 ABELL AVE 268,000
  6/14/07 3136 ABELL AVE 235,000
  6/12/07 3043 ABELL AVE 281,000
  5/8/07 3202 ABELL AVE 0
  4/9/07 3205 ABELL AVE 280,000
  1/4/07 3006 ABELL AVE 0

Presumably the zeros are refinances. So there were 11 sales, of which eight
were above $260,000

My reassessment takes me from $89,720 to $246,080. On the one hand, this is
incredible. On the other hand, this is apparently probably less than my house
is worth. So it doesn't seem likely that I could successfully appeal the new
assesssment.

One thing that will be interesting to see is whether the new higher
assessments will have a negative effect on sales prices, since new owners pay
the full valuation with no 4%-per-year cap.

  Happy 2008...

  -Matthew

Our home in Parkville climbed from an actual sale price of $121k in 2002 to
appraised value of $198k today, or about 8.5% per year over six years.

From its sale in 1992 at $102k to my purchase in 2002 the price of the home
raised by only $18,150, or 1.6% per year over ten years.

I can't imagine that I would get that much on the open market today (if it
were possible to sell at all -- some neighbors have been on the market for over
12 months now), but comparable properties that _have_ sold went for no less
than $200k in the last 12 months, so it's hard for me to pull an example from
recent local real estate transactions that proves the new valuation is poorly
founded.

Is it reasonable to protest the increase on the basis that my house is not
a better investment vehicle than my 401(k) in the dot com boom? This is housing
bubble logic, pure and simple.

Hi, Fellow Charles Village Homeowners!
Anyone else feeling pummeled after receiving their recent Assessment
Notices?
We received ours today and our new market value is MORE THAN DOUBLED from
the previous assessment notice three years ago. Most alarming to me is the
land valuation MORE THAN TRIPLING from the previous assessment.
I don't know about anyone else's perception, but living on North Calvert
Street has not gotten any quieter, cleaner, or less traveled over the past
three years. In fact, we are still reeling and dealing with the aftermath of
the recent sewer installation that had us enjoying a very large and deep pit on
the side of our home for the first quarter of 07.
Jason and I are obviously appealing this assessment, but were just
wondering what others were thinking or planning to do in response to their most
recent valuations/assessments?

Despite this most recent affront from the City and State...really, Happy
New Year to everyone! Cheers to the Village!
