[Chat] FYI - JHU Emergency Campus Siren/PA Test & JHU Info Hub
Neighbors of the Homewood Campus: Please distribute this notice to others living and working in the neighborhoods proximate to the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Charles Village regarding (1) a test of the emergency alert system and (2) The Hub (a new web-based center with news and other info at JHU, including many resources for our neighbors). Homewood Campus Safety and Security will conduct a test of the campus siren/public address system and the Johns Hopkins Emergency Alert text messaging system at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2012. The text alerts are only available to Johns Hopkins affiliates. The test will be a full-scale simultaneous activation of both the siren/PA and emergency text system. The sirens will simultaneously sound the alert tone and then sequentially broadcast the voice message, announcing, "This is a test of the Homewood campus emergency warning system." Those Johns Hopkins affiliates who have subscribed to the text message alert system will receive a brief message that reads, "This is a test of the Homewood Emergency Alert text message system. There is NO EMERGENCY. Had there been an imminent threat additional information would follow." Shortly after the public address broadcast, an all-clear alert tone will sound, followed by the message saying, in part, "This has been a test of the Homewood campus emergency warning system. Had there been an actual emergency, you would have been given specific instructions on what to do." Because the public address system incorporates a silent self-test feature that will exercise each module on a weekly basis, Campus Safety and Security will schedule "live" tests only three times a year. The main purpose of the exercise is to familiarize the Homewood community with the sound of the system. Except for these periodic tests, the system will be used only in the event of an incident or situation that presents a significant threat to the lives or safety of the campus community. Johns Hopkins University emergency notices can be found at http://webapps.jhu.edu/jhuniverse/administration/emergency_weather_security_information/. Introducing the Hub: A new way of looking at Johns Hopkins - Johns Hopkins does so much, in so many places, that it's hard to wrap your brain around it all. But with the arrival of the Hub, a new website, it just got a little easier. The Hub is an online news center where readers can see what's new, what's important and what’s interesting at Johns Hopkins, every day. Health, science, arts, athletics, university news … it’s all in the Hub. Visit the site at http://hub.jhu.edu and learn about all the smart stuff going on here. Re: [Chat] fyi crime
Hi all-- Just thought I'd add that you're not really safe anywhere in Baltimore. I recently moved to Mayfield, having sold my house in CV for a variety of reasons, crime among them. I thought I would be safer here. After moving in, I learned that this house had been broken into less than a year ago. I keep my Club in the patio door now. I've had to run onto a stranger's front porch when a suspicious youth headed straight at me while I was walking down the street two blocks from my house. And then there are the kids hiding drugs in the alley and the weird-looking guy walking along the street at 7:30 on Sunday morning who probably left me alone only because I was wielding a large, heavy shovel . . . So it goes. Some days I just hope I'll get out of Baltimore alive. Re: [Chat] fyi crime
Dawna, I cannot tell you how sorry I am that this has happened to you!!! I'm so glad you're all safe, but what a horrible and scary event. I called 911 the other night around 3 am as I was awakened by the sounds of glass breaking at least 3 times somewhere near the front of my house on St. Paul (it sounded like someone was breaking into a car). Police came pronto, didn't find anything, talked to me, but said they'd also double-check the alleys. The next morning I found broken liquor bottles/glass everywhere in the road and on the sidewalk near the frat house, so I cleaned it up as anybody else would do living in the neighborhood. I suspect it was someone walking along and having a grand time under the influence (and no, I don't think it was the few, remaining frat boys, they've worked hard at being good neighbors this past semester!). All in all it was a pretty spooky experience esp. since the street was illuminated as usual and it was otherwise very quiet in the dead of night...and it could have been much worse... Re: [Chat] fyi crime
Dawna, It does not make me feel good to think this way, but some of us, myself included, may have to lower our threshold on what constitutes a suspicious situation that should be called in to 911. As you say though, it is fortunate that nobody was hurt and that what was taken can be replaced. We have had too much violence in our neighborhood. My downstairs windows have bars over them, and in some respects, I live in a prison. But there are too many good things about Charles Village for me to consider moving elsewhere. Steve. [Chat] FYI: Science should be taught in a science class, religion should be taught in a religion class
Apparently, at least two members of the Cecil County Board of Education in Elkton, MD are having a problem understanding the basic idea that science should be taught in a science class, and religion should be taught in a religion class. See: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/health/bal-md.evolve15feb15,1,6826196.story?coll=bal-local-headlines There are approximately 500 different stories of creation among all the religions of the world, and a class just on that topic might be extremely interesting, but it still doesn't belong in a science class. Any argument to the contrary merely displays: 1) a fundamental ignorance of what science is, or 2) a deliberate and malicious attempt to confuse and corrupt other people's thought processes. Scientists can be religious; many, including myself, are quite fascinated by religion and are very involved in their faiths. Also, people, who presently don't understand what science is, can learn if they wish. However, it is essential to begin with correct definitions and accurate information. Otherwise, like children who are severely malnourished at critical growth stages, they will never be able to stand up straight. As an example: a doctor may pray for assistance in treating a patient, and a patient may pray to be healed, but if the treatment is proven to be harmful by scientific evidence, then the doctor is punished, regardless of his or her faith. Logically, it should work the other way too, so that a patient who is healed after treatment would attribute the credit to science and the skill of the doctor. But, most scientists and doctors prefer to be humble; most do not quibble and are not insulted when those recoveries are called "miracles." That is the beauty of science -- it *does* encourage questions and self-doubt, and it *does not* prevent us from one day finding hard evidence of the divine. But until that day, "intelligent design" should not be taught in a science class. -- Crystal = *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Give the gift of relaxation to yourself and others: A hammock or a hammock chair. http://www.twinoakstore.com/ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* __ Do you Yahoo!?
