Dawna,

Thanks for mentioning Google Fiber and bmorefiber
in your last column. If you have space/time for a correction,
Jon Lesser was dropped and Charles Martucci's
name got clobbered -- I think a line was deleted or
something. It would be nice to give the names again.

Thanks,

Good Afternoon Everyone,

As the Guilford Avenue Bicycle Boulevard project nears final design, I
wanted to let you know how this project would affect the street. No parking
spaces were eliminated with this project and the overall nature of Guilford
Ave will remain as it is - a quiet, residential street. The planned
improvements will discourage through traffic and reduce traffic speed
without altering access for local residents.

The planned improvements include:

1. "Sharrows" added along the length of Guilford Avenue from

University Pkwy to Mt. Royal Ave, where the project will meet Phase 2 of the
Jones Falls Trail.

2. Mini circles will replace 4 way stops at 22nd St, 24th St and 32nd

St. Community input played a vital role in helping DOT determine where the
mini-circles were needed to improve safety and security.

3. A stop sign has been added to 20th St at Guilford Ave, just north

of the school headquarters

4. 27th & 31st St. intersections reduced from a 4 way to 2 way stop

5. Bike & emergency vehicle friendly speed humps on the 2600 block and

2700 block of Guilford

6. Curb extensions on the southwest corner of North Ave & Guilford to

provide for better bike & pedestrian protection

7. Widening the median crossing at North Ave from 6' to 12'. While

two separate crossings for pedestrians and bicycles were preferred, the
location of signal poles prevented this option.

8. Green sharrows on approaches to 33rd St crossing and green bike

lanes on the 33rd St median crossing.

9. Wayfinding signs indicating destination, distance and direction

10. A white pavement marking to delineate the on-street parking from travel
lanes

Our consultants at Toole Design Group are putting together a map to help
illustrate these improvements. I would like to meet after the New Year to
give you a preview of the project. If you have any questions in the
meantime, please let me know.

Hey John, thanks for this. Also, are you responsible for the booming music
on the 3000 block of Guilford during the marathon? Also, what is the name
of the eye of the tiger guy if you know? Thanks so much, Dawna

Re: [Chat] news needed for my Village Chat column

2010-10-13 Thread Kathleen Wilsbach
Kathleen Wilsbach and Emil Volcheck of the 3000 block of Guilford just
returned from a wonderful vacation in Ireland. They were accompanied
by Kathleen's 85 year old mother, Isabel, who lives in Havertown, PA.
The visited the towns in County Cavan where Isabel's parents were born
and grew up before emigrating to Philadelphia in the early 1900's. Her
parents met and then married in Philadelphia where they raised 10 children.
The next part of the trip was visiting Mary, the daughter of Isabel's Uncle Tom.
She lives on the beautiful West Coast in the town of Fenit which is
associated with Saint Brendan, who discovered America before Columbus
(so claim the Irish). Mary was full of stories about family, growing up
on a farm in Cavan, and running a B&B in Fenit for many years. We
saw 6 rainbows but the leprachauns are feeling the recession so
unfortunately, no pot of gold.

2010-10-12 Thread Jeanne Knight

My neighbor, Laura Kindseth, has accepted a position as the Main Street Manager
in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Laura has been a fantastic neighbor and a crucial
part of Old Goucher and Charles Village scene.

My niece, Corey Fletcher, was accepted in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented
Youth and was honored in a ceremony on September 26. She joins her sister,
Tyler, who was accepted 3 years ago in the same program

Dawna,

The project was spearheaded by Mary Bakowski Coyne
m...@atomicorangeproductions.com
whose husband Brendan is a CVCA Board Member and Diana Weller
diana...@hotmail.com.

Diana is a Baltimore City Public School teacher and Mary has design and
marketing company
www.atomicorangeproductions.com. It was Mary who designed the CVCA Business
Members

decal which encourages Villagers to support local businesses.

I mentioned to Sandy Sparks that the project warrants an article in The Charles
Villager. She believes

it would be best timed for spring to encourage other neighbors to plant flowers
on their blocks.
