What is that yellow called? It looks a lot like either "speed yellow" from
Porsche or "fly yellow" from Ferrari. That's one very enterprising dash
modification. How much time do you have into this thing Herb?

I thought that I would step in on this one. Ground Up is my vendor of
choice. I have been buying parts off them steadily for the last 3 years and
not once have I had a problem with any of their products. I know that I have
easily spent 8-10 grand with them. I have actually built up a relationship
with the owner and I can say that he knows chevelles very well. They also
take on restoration projects themselves. I will continue to use them
exclusively for parts for the 69 Malibu that I have recently begun tearing
down.

Same problem occurred when I installed my new Holley 650 DP on my 327. I
have a Performer RPM intake and needed the 1" spacer to gain enough
clearance for the manifold vacuum connection near the distributor.
Anyway, There is no need to buy anything other than a new air cleaner
element. Buy the thin one that is standard for a second gen Camaro. The
elements are only about 1-1&1/2" in height & should give you the clearance
you need.
Good Luck.

Pay the nice mechanic for any work he has already done and move vehicle to
another shop.
BUT, explain WHY you are moving to another mechanic. If he isn't willing to
follow something this simple, then he has little or no regard for you as a
customer. He certainly has no respect for your wishes.

I did this on my 69, but I did have to run a couple of new wires, and add
connections to the junction boxes, then retape the harness. Most of the
under dash wires will work by changing the connection from lights to
terminals. you will have to change your oil and temp sending unit, add new
wires for tach and alt.

I recently found a tach dash with gauges to replace my warning light dash.

Does anybody have experience with the wiring changes needed for this swap?
Specific questions:

1. Will the wiring harness in the dash have to be changed?

2. Will the engine harness for a warning light dash work with the tach
dash? If not how much is different? (I already have a warning-light engine
wiring harness).

3. Will the under hood front light wiring harness be compatible?

Basically I want to talk to someone who has done this. I realize there are
different part numbers for harness's for different options and years. No
one is able to tell me if the differences in the harness's are big or small.

thanks!

best page would be a name or two (someone good to deal with) from each

another two at the two parts houses I go to regularly. These guys are the
best at that location for parts in Dallas. I'd be willing to post it on

all get things from whatever vendor has the best product for us and might
help alleviate the worries that accompany mail order parts

Larry,
I know what you speak of, Two weeks I paid the same
thing from YO for a 50.00 grille emblem, I'm sure its
weight was not much different than the gas cap, we as
a group(Chevelle People) will get hosed on shipping no
matter who you buy from, I have always recieved good
parts in a timely fashion from Y-O, so I just got
happy with the fact that shipping sucks big time, no

(San Diego, CA.).  Would hate to think of those $300 valve covers sitting
on my front porch for 10 days !!
Since I have your attention, have you installed
that NOS Dual/Gate yet ?  I have mine all installed, homemade brackets and
all, but the shifter cable is not going to work.  How long is the cable
that you have ?

model toggle switch which will work, but will not look
right in the car. Any ideas on where to locate the
proper toggle switch or get mine fixed? Thanks -aks

Most parts are now made in China, & used to be made in Japan, as for
the "Made in USA" sticker, the laws are such that only about 10%
has to be made in the USA, like the box?

And if you look it up, there is a city in Japan called "USA"!

Well I have owned a machine shop for 27 years & we do 100% perfect work.
But in the last 4 years a lot of my work has been going to China for
.10 cents on the dollar. The parts are crap & the Customers have to throw
away many, but BEAN COUNTERS RULE!
A worker at a big company I used to make 5,000 little (very close) parts
for sent them to China, for a lot cheaper. He said China sent them 10,000
for the 5,000 part order with a note that said" Pick out the good ones"

You see the part "Inspector" that has to check every one of the parts
is " Overhead" & all the Bean counters see is that they saved $$..

People that work on the assembly line at this company (I have known
foe 27 years), will call me & say "I hate this the parts won't fit"

Real cars have metal dashboards!

Exactly, I mean its just no fun when you pull the "smell my dash, I got the
new scented Armor All" stunt with a vehicle that is going to not bust your
unsusptecting passengers nose :) (I know its' mean but it is still funny I
fell for it when I was little)

I personally like the loud 'n proud sound, thats why I run the cherry bombs,
great idle, excellent sound from dead stop to WFO (wide freakin' open), and
barley quiet 'nuff to keep legal. As for an H pipe, I don't have one on my
car, I know its supposed to level out the the sound on each side of the car,
I don't really know much more about it though. I think sometime or another,
I am going to install one, probably when I eventually stick in some headers
(I dread that).

I have also come to the sad realization that you cann't tell people what you
want done and how you want it done. Now if you stood over thier back all
day long you just might get it done the way you want it done. Personally I
like the idea of "stealing" your car back and wait for the guy to get at the
shop then call and ask how the car is coming. I am sure you could do the
carb swap yourself, I am by no means anything close to a good mechanic (I
can make it run, running right and just running are two different things for
me) and I have performed many carb swaps myself, it is most of the time an
on/off/on procedure and if it is a new carb, it works great right out of the
box, just follow the idiot proof directions and you are set, then have one
of your good tuning buddys to get it all set right. You will have alot more
sense of accomplishment knowing you did it yourself.. no matter how
bloody your knuckles end up ;-)

Parts that don't fit and the captions in the catalogs are a result of trying to
make a quick buck. These companies are just resellers. They don't care
what the products is, they just want to sell it for a profit. They don't test
it or even write the caption for it. I've seen captions that are exactly the
same as the caption in other catalogs and on the part manufacturor's web site.
They just want to move parts. A good reseller would sell what they feel to be
a good quality product. I for one wouldn't sell crap unless that's what I was
selling it as. If a company actually looking into the products they sold,
they would be more willing to back it up with a guarantee (which becomes
customer service).

I have used the Paddock and didn't have any trouble with them. The best thing
about them is when you are on hold, it's like a half hour commercial for them
and it has that funky echo for effect or something. "The Paddock, the leader in
to your door parts parts parts."

I agree. With the money "we" spend on our cars, it would be nice if there
was a list of parts "to avoid" as well as vendors "to avoid". The more
parts I buy, the more problems I encounter with the quality of the
reproductions. As far as Ground Up Restorations, I do not have very nice
things to say. The parts (big block valve covers & open element air
cleaner) that they sent me DID NOT FIT ! I could not believe that they
market chrome BB valve covers, w/drippers and the correct projection
"dimples" visible, but they DO NOT FIT ! The same with the open element air
cleaner. Actually, the air cleaner fits fine, until you try to install the
flame arrestor (wire screen for air breather) that Ground Up sells. The
flame arrestor is perfectly round, the tube that is welded into the base is
round also. However, the tube is cut at an angle, which makes the hole
"oblong" and the round flame arrestor DOES NOT FIT ! I am presently
cutting, welding, and grinding to make the flame arrestor work. The valve
covers were sent back, (guess who pays for both shipping cost ?).
You have to wonder...don't they even try this stuff out to see if it fits
? Before they sell it ? I am so disgusted with the lack of quality in the
reproduction parts business. If you cannot make the part correctly, don't
waste time, energy, resources, and ultimately MY MONEY !!!
Sorry for the "soapbox", but it really ticks me off when the catalogs say
"These exact reproduction coversblah, blah, blah" - the caption should
read, "These covers LOOK real nice, but don't fit for SH#T" !!"

Thanks. As the Manager of the Edelbrock Tech Line told

Carb that is the same height as the Q-Jet. So, you

I ditto Ron's sentiments about Year One exactly!

Their shipping charges is what finally sent me over the edge with them.

The Paddock now gets my cash... so far so good, and they are 45 minutes

I've used Paddock a couple of times & found them to be very friendly,
knowledgeable & efficient.

This may be off subject, but does anyone know what type of muffler system
is used on the new Corvettes and possibly Camaroes. A new Corvette drove
past my house the other day while I was working on my car and that was the
greatest sounding "stock" pipes I've ever heard on a car. They were not
"loud", but had a very healthy sound without just making a bunch of noise.

Just curious.

2001-07-14 Thread Ronald V. Mlejnek

My 2 cents worth.

I am really annoyed by Year One. In my opinion, they probably sell the
best replacement parts for chevys. They spent a lot of time developing an
almost worthless website. When you e-mail them with a question about a
part number and price from a catalog that is several years old, they will
not reply. I have the impression that Year One is in the catalog marketing
business, rather than selling parts.

I have some programming experience in developing websites and with very
little effort, these companies could put their entire inventory, ie part
number, current price, and short description on the web for practically
nothing compared to what Year One paid to develop their worthless site.
OPG and NPD regularily send me free catalogs and so I buy all my parts from
them. In one year, I did over $2500 worth of business with OPG when I
completely redid the interior on my 70 Chevelle and had some major body
work completed on my 69.

As for Year One, I refuse do any business with them, unless they start
helping person's who want to do business with them.

As for e-mail orders, I have fairly good luck with CarParts.com. first of
all, the quality is great and you can select different manufactures at
different price for the same part. I asked them if they had a money back,
100% guarentee, and I finally got an e-mail from someone there who said
that if I was not fully satisfied with their parts, I could return them for
a complete refund with no restocking charges or postage costs.

Anyway, I ordered a bunch of parts and then one day, I received something I
did not want. I told them that I wanted to return the part for a refund
and was told there was a restocking charge and that I would have to pay
return postage. I immediately sent the memo about no charges if not
satisfied and got a UPS prepaid label e-mailed to me and no charge for
returning parts plus a full refund. So when ordering any part from anyone
on the internet, get it in writing first!

Also, we are a small town and not a lot of choices. An O'Reillys moved
into town and I tried them out. They carry good brand name parts and their
prices are very competetive. Our NAPA store has really gone downhill so I
have been doing more business with O'Reillys.

As for Pep Boys, all one has to do is watch their TV commercials to know
what they are. Anybody that would have the guts (or stupidity) to sell you
a set of 4 tires for $99 is either nuts or using it as a gimic to get you
to buy something more expensive. With the recent Firestone fiasco on
Explorers, I could not imagine anyone driving anywhere on a $25 tire. I
just paid $150 each for tires on my S-10 Blazer and I know that they will
take me anywhere I want to go.

I have to agree that I think the person you talk to on the phone is who sets the pace
for the experience you
ultimately have with a particular vendor. But, of course, sending wrong or damaged
parts, forgetting to ship an
item, and inflated shipping prices is completely another matter. It all boils down to
CUSTOMER SERVICE. I deal
with the place that takes care of ME. So far, I am not really thrilled with anyone!

Right now there is an active thread going on in Team Chevelle message board about the
service provided by
Ground Up. I have used them a few times with mixed reviews.

I think what we need is a page for Customer Service reviews for the different vendors
of parts and supplies that
we use for our cars. Maybe I'll ad one to my site if I can figure out how to set up a
form and database.

Has anyone used The Paddock? I know they have been around for a long time, I used them
when I was in high
school for my first chevelle (1979).

Like you needed two bends or something to keep it from

put straight pipes off my headers to two flowmasters(2-chamber) with
turndowns right before the differential.  Anyone see any major
problems with doing that?  Oh, I do want it loud.
Also, how important is an H-pipe, and what is it's
purpose?
That would sound great at idle, but as I found out with the full exhaust,
Flowmaster 2 chambers sound like crap at WOT...Next time I redo an
exhaust, I'll be going with quieter mufflers that sound good at all rpm
ranges

Herb,

Been there and seen all those cars. This place does exsist and is around the Troupe,
Texas area. The address is correct. Bring some cash etc. cause its NOS and you pay for
what you get. Super nice guy and I had a great time just visiting with Mike and his
wife while I was there. Spent some money and four hours visiting and looking.

Kem,
I would pick . A.. You definitely don't want this guy working on your
car, but it's not worth the hassles you'll have by not paying him. Just pay
him, tell him in blunt terms why you will never do business with him again &
take the car elsewhere.
As far as the air cleaner, all you probably need is to change to a low
profile cleaner.

Bob,

Dwaine here out of KC/KS. I was down visiting Mike for a 66 SS hood and to attend the
Dalls swap meet. He had one 66SS that had a very small rust spot near the rear of the
passenger scoop area. Hood was repainted and I was unsure what else might be under the
paint etc. Price and condition did not fit my needs. He does have an NOS 67 SS hood
and I didn't aske the price etc. since it was not what I was needing. If that or those
are the years you are looking for.
