I stand corrected...but, isn't it really the 9,855th car?

I thought it was supposed to be plant related numbers but when I mis-calculated
it to 200,000 that was way too high.

Also, mhat's the number on the cowl tag? Body sequence number? Bodies were
numbered differantly than the chassis? How were they numbered? Mine is 22256.

The number on the tag is a sequence production number for the plant, not
just Chevelles. I don't know what other makes/models were produced at the
Framingham, MA plant such as Olds Cutlass, Buick Skylarks, Pontiac LeMans,
or even full size cars. FWIW, beginning with the 1969 model year the
numbers STARTED at 31 so yours was the 9856th car built at the plant.

As I remember growing up as a kid, the new model years always came out
around Sept/Oct time frame. I think most still do...I know it's d@mn near
impossible to order a new car in late July!

It's always in the last quarter of the year that the new models came out
for the following year. There have been many exceptions lately that seem to
skip a year. Some in the past skipped a half year (1970 1/2 Z/28) etc.

As far as your car goes, it was more than likely built in '68...Not sure
when the cut-off for new models was, but pretty sure it wasn't as late as
September

I decoded my cowl tag and VIN for kicks today. It got me thinking. How was
production handled in '69? Like today we get the new model year starting in
september or so. So 2002s will be hitting showrooms soon even though it's
still 2001. Was it the same in '69? My car was built in October but it was
the 209,856th car built according to the VIN. Would there have been 209,000+
cars built by the end of october '68? Or was it built in October of '69?

In case you need it, my VIN is 1 3637 9G309856. Not sure if the 209,000 cars
is for coupes only or what.

Oh yeah...The VIN info here lists most coupes as notch backs. BUt the last one

I just switched from drums to discs on my 69 chevelle and there is no difference.
The hub on the rotor seems to push it out as far as the drum did.

How would this affect the track width (and therefore the required backspacing)

[Chevelle-List] Fw: Trunk torque rods / Hood, trunk and tail gate stripes

2001-08-14 Thread bncbelz

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Does anyone know of a source or have a pair of the trunk torque rods that
hold the trunk lid open? (for a 1971 sport coupe)

I was driving along yesterday and heard a loud "BANG"! I couldn't find
anything wrong till I got to the show and then when opening the trunk found
the end of one rod laying in the trunk and not enough lift to hold the
trunk
 lid open.
 Startled the sh*t out me.
 Any help would be appreciated.

Also I looked in my owners manual and found the picture of the SS with the
stripes all the way down the bumper.
Interesting that shot made it to the manual.
I have a 71' assembly manual that shows the D88 option stripes going down
the rear bumper on a coupe and another on the El Camino with the stripes
down the tail gate but both drawings had "CANCELED" stamped on them and the
cancellation date on the drawing was 6/20/70.
They were "redrawn & redesigned" on another drawing dated 6/22/70.
Guess they changed their minds about the funky stripes and some
pre-production car made the photo shoot for the manual.

 Thanks in advance.

It sounds OK to me, as long as you can move it by hand with
no bind there should be no problems.
When you grease it all up and connect the steering and
stuff it should be really hard (lot of effort)to move from

RE: [Chevelle-List] Foreign Junk? Check out my BMW sbc conversion

I am fairly new to the list and here is my first posting.
I figure the only way to own a foreign car is to force chevy power into
it. I put a Vortec headed 350 in this BMW 325. Check it out as well as my 70
Chevelle that I am trying to get into the 10's while driving it on pump gas.

RE: [Chevelle-List] primer

2001-08-14 Thread Robert B. King

Good call Bill. I was in the auto body trade for close to 20 years and have
had similar experiences. I especially liked PPG's epoxy primer, and used it
to 'lock down' bare metal before proceeding with a two part primer surfacer.
For any paint job where superior appearance and longevity is desired, it is
definitely worth the extra money to use good products. Experience tells me
that the finish is only as good as the preparation.

What I see causing most problems with primer is exposure to the elements.
People will spray primer over body work or bare metal and then leave it
for several months or years. Most primers that are meant to be sanded are
porous and water will pass right through to the steel. If the car is
allowed to sit outside, the primer can do nothing to stop rust from
forming. In fact, quite often you won't even see the rust until you
shelled out a bunch of your hard-earned money for that "killer" paint
job. Primer will also oxidize when it is allowed to sit for any length of
time. If the odxidized layer isn't sanded off before paint is applied,
peeling will be the result.

There are primers, such as PPG's DP series epoxy primers that seal out
moisture and have corrosion resistant qualities. This product can
actually be left uncoated for a great length of time. Sometimes I hear
people say it's too expensive. I used to paint for a living. I don't like
to do things over. If I have to spend a little more up front to prevent
myself from having to do something a second time, it was well worth it.

If you are doing a job that can't be painted any time soon, use an epoxy
primer. I recommend using an epoxy first anyway. It's good insurance. I
put it on before I use any body filler. Body filler sticks to it better
than it does to steel. Then, when you are ready for paint you can spray a
surfacer type primer over your work to finish it. I would recommend a 2
part primer over any air dry lacquer type primer. The 2 part products
fill much better than the old stuff and they are much less prone to
shrinking also.
