Re: [Chevelle-List] Tremec into a '66/'67?

2001-11-17 Thread Herbert Lumpp

I did a little
researchregardingthe torque ratings for manual transmissions.
Apparently, the torque rating is based on a "static" test, meaning torque
is applied to a non-spinning transmission to determine how much it can take
before something breaks. Naturally that breakage point will be higher than
the ratings that are published.

If I remember correctly, the Richmond 6 is
rated at 450lbs. According to Dyno 2000, my 454 makes 480lbs+ throughout
its RPM range. Since I only have 10" wide wheels with 285 size
tires,I doubt I'll ever get enough traction to worry about the torque
capacity of the tranny.

Besides, most Muncie's are rated around
200-250lbs and they've survived behind lots of big blocks over the
years.

[Chevelle-List] Manual Trans torque specs; Tremec vs Richmond

2001-11-17 Thread Michael Pell

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

The Tremec TKO is advertised to handle 525 ft lbs.
The Tremec 3550 is advertised to handle 425 ft lbs.
See http://www.fortesparts.com/tremec/tr3550-2.html

The Richmond Street 5 speed is rated at 450 ft lb. Just last year it
was 425 ft lb, FWIW.
They don't give torque specs for their other transmissions, unless I
overlooked them.
See http://www.richmondgear.com/

My guess is that they both handle way more torque. The old muncies
have held up for years behind big blocks, and are rated much lower.

Unfortunately, what I know about transmissions fits inside a thimble, but my
guess is that if those tabs are broken off, you're not going anywhere.
Hopefully somebody else can give you a more astute and assured answer.

The tabs allow the torque converter to drive the pump in the
transmission. If they're broken off the pump won't work and, needless to
say, neither will the transmission.

If the notches in the torque converter aren't lined up with the tabs in
the pump when the trans is bolted to the engine they will be broken from
the pressure of trying to bolt everything together..I won't
go into how I learned this the hard way a long time ago.

I wish I had better news for you.

Kieth,
those tabs drive the front pump providing the pressure to the entire trans.
You should deffinatly not try to run it or you might also smoke the clutches
because there is no fresh fluid being pumped through. A replacement pump
might be in ored or a new pump gear. hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. Yes I did break the tabs during the first
installation of the transmission. Yes the tabs drive the oil pump for the
tranny. When installing the transmisson, it was not bolting up right, so we
pulled it back and turn the torque converter and it fell inside the tabs. I
drove the car home with no problems, other than the camshaft going out (two
exhaust lobes wiped out). I was reinstalling the front seal because it was
leaking when I saw that the tabs were broken. I am not sure when the tabs
broke, could I felt the converter slip down into the tabs, but they did
break. So there it is, I made a big mistake. I cost me $40.00 to get fixed
at a transmisson place in Daytona Beach here. Thanks for all the information
on this problem and all the other help and advise this group has given me.
Hope I one day I will get all the problem fixed and I can drive this car.
