R U sure that the alternator is an external model? I've heard of people switching to
an internal regulated alternator, but not disconnecting the external regulator.
Causes wierd problems.

I dont know what it could be, but youre supposed to have 13,8 - 14,5
volts while charging.

Are you using an internal regulated alternator or an external one ?

Michael
If 69 is anything like 72, you need to get up close. You will see that the back
side of the cover has plastic flap. Also you will see that it is hinged (by the
plastic) at the top or bottom (don't remember). Just put a small screwdriver, butter
knife in the slot & flip the cover up. The entire cover does not come off until you
remove the bolt holding the belt. Also (72 at least) used a large TORX bolt (45-48?)
to hold the belt in place.

There are three bolts that are easy to see on the top. There are two lower bolts, one on each side, that you access from below. Then there is one that hides between the steering column and the dash. That one is easy to miss. All you have to do is take the two nuts loose that hold the steering column to the bracket and the steering column will drop low enough to gain access to it. If you forget that one its real easy to crack 30 year old plastic.

Don't forget to take the parking brake release lever loose first. Release the clip and you can leave the lever in the dash while you remove it. All the wiring should unplug if it hasn't been messed with.

[Chevelle-List] Performer RPM intake problems

2002-07-07 Thread Robert Belz

Just thought I'd share this to possibly save others grief. I put an new
Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold on my 454 yesterday but not without having
to modify it. After I gooped it up (front and back of block) with silicon
sealer and set the manifold on I found the bolt holes wouldn't line up.
Further inspection revealed that the manifold hit the casting flash on the
heads at the bolts holes third back from front and rear ( the ones that
stick up the furthest). I had to remove the manifold and file on the gasket
side of the manifold near the top of the holes until the manifold would
clear and set down in place. I don't know if head and block decking
contributed to the problem or it was just the casting flash that caused the
interference. (I have had two other manifolds on this motor and never ran
into this problem.) Now I will always test fit a manifold and not assume
it's going to fall into place.
I also put on a Holley Avenger 770 carb, and MSD Pro billet distributor
with a 6AL box, the pisser is I can't tell if it runs much better than with
my old Q-Jet and ancient Holley Street Dominator intake. Also on the noise
(howl) issue that came up recently with the Holley, mine has a different
growl, not quit as loud as the Q-Jet.
I hope I can get more out of this new set up or it looks like I dumped
about a grand for nothing. Well back to the garage.

Sorry to hear the misfortune of those in the flooding areas, hope everyone
is O.K. We could sure use some of that water here in Colorado, we are
burning up, literally.

[Chevelle-List] tuning tips anyone?

2002-07-07 Thread Robert Belz

Anyone care to share their tuning specs if they are using a Holley 770,
Performer RPM intake and MSD distributor (on a big block)? So far I have
tried 32 to 38 degrees total timing, left the blue bushing in the
distributor and changed the springs to the light blue to get all advance in
by 3000 RPM. Left the carb jetting stock (probably could lean it out some
as I'm at 4800 ft.) Haven't seen much in the way in performance increases
so far.
Thanks,

Sir,
I apologize to you for offending you, I was not trying to do that. I am,

respond to many of the Chevelle e-mails! However, what you don't know about
me is that even though I have strong religious convictions, I hold them
close to my chest. I think these are very personal and I agree with you as
to separation of Chevelle and Church; And State AND Parties And just about
everything else; there is a time and place for everything! Foremost, I want
you to understand that I respect your right to chose your life style
whatever it may be; that is what this great Nation was founded on!

However, I think you missed the underlining point; the respondent from
ABC was bashing my religion which is something you of all people should
abhor! Yes, I am a Christian, and I do not hate homosexuals. I don't hate
anybody, it's my upbringing! I do, however, dislike homosexuals who try to
push their lifestyle on me or my children, the liberal press that reports
what suits their cause, those demigods in Washington who would have all
vehicles 15 years or older crushed, and those funny looking guys in the
Middle East who would have all of us killed if they could!

I am ccing the Chevelle list as a apology to all I my have offended.
Please accept my sincere apologies as I respect all of you and would not
want to offend anybody.

You also need some jack stand or some wire to hold
up the dash as you remove bolts. You can also have someone help you. As you
remove bolts and get down to the last two or three, the dash will start dropping

[Chevelle-List] Dye Seat Belts

2002-07-07 Thread Ron Griffith

FYI

I recently dyed the seat belts in my 71' Elky and
they look like new.  My method was a little different from the
instructions.  I used 2 bottles of RIT Liquid Dye as suggested for
thick fabrics. Mixed in a cup of salt as suggested for color-fastness.  I
did not remove any hardware so after boiling I waited until the dye had cooled
just enough so as not to melt the plastic.  I left the belts in the dye
overnight rather than the half-hour the instructions called for.  The next
day I washed and rinsed the belts in the sink using laundry detergent.
This took several washings before rinse water was clear.  I then hung them
out in the sun to dry before reinstalling.  They look great.
Fortunately, my seatbelts were black.  I wouldn't expect much success with
matching other colors.  For some reason the white tags hardly took the dye
at all.  They remained white and look as if they are slightly soiled rather
than dyed.

Hope this helps someone avoid buying expensive
belts.

I'd do the 350hp motor. The other one is desirable, but you can make the same hp for less money with the one that's complete.

[Chevelle-List] 396/350 verses 375

2002-07-07 Thread JDHall

Hello all.. I have a true 69ss that I am in the process of
gathering stuff ect. beforerestoration. I will have a questions every now
and then I hope to get help with astime goes on. Below I have written a
brief history of my car if anyone feelslike reading it.Today's
question would be what are the pro and cons in deciding weather togo
with  a 396/359hp or 396/375. I have access to both however there
aresome differences. The 350 hp is complete and was running when it was
pulled. Its also available at a steal for 600 bucks. The 375hp is just a
shortblockand is extremely pricey at 1500 bucks. Both are correct numbers
for a 69chevell. I'm not loaded by any means however I can afford the right
choice.All input is welcome.Best Gas Guzzlin Regards,JD
Hall[EMAIL PROTECTED]My
short story...I owned this car 20 years ago when I started driving. It
was very clean andhid the rust well. 17 years ago I decided it was time to
sell before itstarted showing to bad. Well as we all know most of wish we
had never soldare 1st muscle car. Then a little over a two years ago a guy I
went to highschool with showed up at my fathers door to tell him he had just
purchased acar we used to own (my father had been heavy into restoration at
the time). It just so happened this guy now lived across the street form pops
house. After a phone call from pops I had to go look for myself knowing there
wouldbe no way in HE double toothpicks it would be my old car. Shore as
there she was! Just as I had left her less the motor and trans.
Thekicker...The title was still in my name 8). He wasn't interested in
sellingthough. What a bummer that day was. He had big plans that included
tubbingand all sorts of nastiness to my ol babe. A year passed and I had
prettymuch giving up hope. Then the phone rang. He had decided to sell her
afterall and had it loaded up to take to meet the fowling day. What a classy
moveby calling me to have a chance to get her back. To top it off he
onlycharged me what he paid. I guess if there's any moral to my little story
forany young muscle heads reading this list. Do what you have do to hang on
toyour 1st car gents. Don't let them go. You regret it. I was one of the
rarelucky ones.JD

Yep, they said that DEI puts something into the restrictor plate program every single day...they are dedicated to keeping their cars out front and it shows...glad Mikey won another one. If he could win at other tracks, he might be a contender.

Dale Sr may be gone but he is still winning at Daytona. Dale Sr. directed his
engine program to develop and build high HP restrictor plate engines. DEI is
now seeing the benefits of this program. Dale Sr. is still winning races!

That was a VERY hard hit...front-row Joe is ok thoughanother
miracleI have a lot of disdain built up for those God-forsaken plates
