[Chevelle-List] alternater problems

2002-10-16 Thread Robert Belz

Help Guys,
Tonight I started my Chevelle after it sat for a couple months (been in
storage). It turned over kinda slow then fired and I noticed the lights
were kinda bright and the amp meter (stock gauge) was nearly pegged. I
turned on the high beams and they went out. When I got home I checked the
battery voltage with the car running and it was over 15 volts and the
alternator was too hot to touch. The lights had power to the sockets on
high and low beam but there wasn't continuity on the high beam side of the
lamps themselves. Must have blown the head lamps! The alternater is a
nearly new SI series, could something have happend to the regulator to make
run at "full charge" . I also noticed when I disconnected the ground from
the battery I got a spark. Nothing was drawing current that I could tell so
I disconnected the 2 wire alternator plug and rechecked and then there was
no current draw. What gives, any ideas? I guess I'll pull it tomorrow and
take it back to the parts store and have it tested but I have never seen a
problem like this before. Any and all input (no pun intended) would be
appreciated as to what is going on and how did it happen .
Thanks
Bob Belz

2002-10-16 Thread Trooper

Thanks Tom,
I am an ACES and Team Chevelle member as well and I mentioned it. His
answer "you need to tell me that before you place your order" He did
however eventually give me my 10% discount for being a member after I
specifically ask for it. Don't know who I talked to. I'll keep in mind
that Ken and Nino are the men in the future. What is really upsetting,
as I said before, is basing the shipping on the price of your purchase,
not the size, weight, and destination. All the items I ordered were
small, light, and expensive.

Craig,
I've found NPD to be cheaper on many parts as compared to Year One or
Ground Up but they many times turn out to be inferior parts. At other
times they are the exact same quality and at a substantial savings. Now
the big problem, you never know until they're on your door step :)

Who did you talk to? I'm just going to throw this out to everyone on the
list. if you call Ground Up, make sure you talk to Ken or Nino. They will
take care of you. The people that generally answer the phone are only good
if you have part numbers and ready to order without any questions. If a
conflict arises, talk with one of them. Ken is a very good man to deal with
and I have never had any problems with them. Also if you talk to Ken he will
more than likely give you the actual ship charges anyway if you bring it up.
Being a Team Chevelle/ACES member is a plus too :-).
Also, prices do tend to fluxuate depending on where the market is. Price
increases are not uncommon in this industry as I have found out over and over
again.

Just my opinion.

I've had the same experience that you and Brad have had but with National

as compared to what they are charging when you call them up, I placed an

listed in their 2002 catalog for $85.00 and the other for $24.95. At the
end of the order the numbers weren't right so I asked the guy the read
them back for me. When he got to the cables he says $89.00 and $26.95
respectively. I question him and his exact response was "That's a new
catalog and we threw it together real fast so some of the prices aren't
right". I ask if he would honor the listed prices and he said no. I ask
twice for shipping charges and he couldn't give them to me. His answer
"should be around 10% of the cost of the items purchased". Since when
does shipping cost have anything to do with the price of an item. I
thought it would be dependent on weight, size, and destination, SILLY

I bought a Caprice sedan which was on its last legs. I junked it
after taking all the front suspension.

My local parts guy said they could get everything except a) the
brackets which hold the end of the hard line and the flexible hoses,
b) the rotor dust shields and c) the spindles themselves. Everything
else (bearings, seals, rotors, calipers, hoses, pads, etc.) was
available. It was cheaper to buy rebuilt calipers than it was to buy
a rebuild kit, actually!

Re: [Chevelle-List] Coil Spring Recommendations, Door Skin Removal

2002-10-16 Thread Dwight Fulton

Dave, It's impossible to remove door skins & then replace the same skins as they are welded on and could not be removed without inflecting major damage to them. If you only have small dents & dings remove the door panels & window regulator & glass, them repair the damage.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Coil Spring Recommendations, Door Skin Removal

2002-10-16 Thread Wayne Kline

Dave, The BB.SW,Air is the highest spring rate on stock springs. Kind of
give a Chevelle the gasser look ( un cut)!
I have cut springs in the past with limmited success.
to get it to sit where I wanted , the spring weight left to much travel and
the long tube headers would hit over med bumps.
There are two type of aftermarket srings. the higher spring rate and tighter
turns per inch and the variable rate springs. Theses springs turns per in.
are close on one end and wider on the other. I think ( ASSUME) these are the
ones OPG sells ?
I opted for Hotchkis on my 65. And what a difference over the cut SW/AIR/BB
springs. With a fast ratio box, poly bushings, 1 1/8 sawy bar and disk up
front.
It's not your grandmothers Chevelle anymore.

As for your doorskins. I am sorry to tell you, but you destroy the door
skin removing them. You have to grinding off the edges that are folded over
the inside door shell/frame.
If you need acces to hammer/dolly your dent remove the glass. Or get a
pannel puller. the screw in ones are cheap but reguire a welder to re weld
the holes.

Herbert,
That's was a good one. Thanks for getting back with

a ground should go? Does anyone know? Hood to firewall, firewall to block, block

Also, could you make your default email text larger. The

[Chevelle-List] Coil Spring Recommendations, Door Skin Removal

2002-10-16 Thread the . cat

Hey!

I'm looking for a pair of front coils for a 67, with a slightly
stiffer-than-stock rate. I currently have a pair that are originally
intended for a big block with air and auto - what I thought would be
the highest stock rate. Anyhow, I'd like to move up a little in
spring rate. Can anyone recommend one aftermarket manufacturer over
another? Dropped coils are okay as well, because I'd be cutting
stock height ones.

As well, is there an easy way to remove and replace door skins? I
have some dents and dings that would be easy to pound out, if I could
get just the outer skin off the doorframe and have some simple way to
re-attach it.

Thanks,
Dave.
