Subject: [Chevelle-List] Header Question

I'm in the middle of doing some upgrades to my '71 Malibu 350, including
headers and exhaust. As far as I know, the engine is stock, but not
original; at least the ports on the heads are the stock size. I'm not sure
what headers came with the engine, but they were too rusted and dented to
attach to the new flowmaster exhaust.

So I purchased a set of Hedman headers (pn 68296 to be precise), which I
heard from (some on this list) should fit fine. The passenger side fits
great; lots of clearance, and the collectors exit where they should to
line up with the indent in the transmission cross member for the exhaust
pipe. The drivers side is another story. After bolting them up, they hit
the frame cross member as well as the lower control arm. The collector
also misses the transmission cross member indent by quite a bit (too far
to the outside of the car). If the header flange was at a slightly
different angle, so that the pipes ran closer to the engine, I think
things would fit fine.

I called Hedman and they said it could be that the one side got "tweeked",
and that another may be ok. Luckly, Summit will take them on a return.

1) Do others on this list have experience with Hedman 68296 (or 68290)
headers on a small block? How have they fit on the drivers side?
2) Should I expect that much manufacturing variance in headers such that
another set might fit?
3) Should I look at another manufacturer?

As always, any help is much appreciated.

RE: [Chevelle-List] cowl plenum air cleaner (picture)

2003-03-04 Thread William King
I think nascar uses cowl due to horsepower restrictions. I got this info
from one of Tod Bodine's mechanics.

At 09:06 PM 3/3/2003 -0600, you wrote:
Two schools of thought here - the NASCAR type guys use the cowl plenum

anything else. I would think drawing air from the base of the

ducting. Drag racers (such as Pro Stock) on the other hand use huge
scoops for not only clearance but to force air into the engine.
I asked Warren Johnson during a question/answer session a few years ago
what he'd like to see changed in Pro Stock. He said (in essence), "Get
rid of the tunnel ram and carburetors and go with low profile fuel
injection. It takes about 60 horsepower to push the scoop through the
air at speed."

Don't forget about the "low pressure area" created at the cowl vent
openings, by the windshield!! The negative pressure created at this area
helps deliver a vortex for delivery of outside air (mini-turbo effect) to
the intake charge, not to mention the differential in air temperature, thus
greater air density=horsepower!!

Re: [Chevelle-List] 6" Fiberglass Cowl Hood

2003-03-04 Thread tjgallant

Does anyone know if either Harwood or Glasstek make a 6"
Cowl Hood for a '67 Chevelle?  I went to the Harwood website and didn't see
any.  I did a search for Glasstek (couldn't find a Glasstek homepage, but
found a couple of places that sell Glasstek stuff) and
the largest cowl hood I could find for a '67 was a
4".

Any other companies that make good fiberglass hoods?
In your dealings with Glasstek and Harwood, would they be willing
to
make a 6" cowl hood for me??  I am willing to spend a
little more to get better quality.

All help from ya'll is welcome!!  Thanks for the good
advice I've gotten thus far.

Everything I have ever read online about Unlimited
Fiberglass has been bad. Their cheaper price is made up by the fact you will
spend more to straighten & finish their stuff. Might as well spend a
little more and get a lot more with Harwood or Glastek.

[Chevelle-List] [OT] Chevy truck - stepside vs. fleetside rear bumper

2003-03-04 Thread John Nasta
I am getting different opinions on which is which regarding the stepside &
fleetside rear bumpers on Chevy trucks. One is rounded at the corners and
wraps around the tailgate, and the other is more industrial and flat
looking, and goes straight across the tailgate.

Personally, I thought the stepside trucks got the chrome wraparound bumpers
and the fleetsides got the painted, flat rear bumpers, but our supplier on
these has them listed the other way around (and at the moment, so do we as a
result). Any clarification would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John Nasta

I personally say let the Chevelle
name RIP.   GM already ruined the Malibu name by making it a FWD
POS.  They also dropped the F body, another brilliant move by GM.
Also if they did end up building this car, it would more than likely be
overpriced.  Just my opinion.  I actually like the look of the '05
  Mustang better.Tom

It is nice looking but all that is shown is an
artist rendition of what a 2005 Chevelle might look like. I have my doubts
there is a prototype anything like that. It would probably be a major
paradigm shift for GM to build that car but let's hope it does
happen.

Somebody on this list had a friend that had bought a cowl induction hood from them. He had to modify, and he worked on it for over 40 hours to get the thing halfway decent.

2003-03-04 Thread Clint Hooper

Everything I have ever read online about Unlimited
Fiberglass has been bad. Their cheaper price is made up by the fact you will
spend more to straighten & finish their stuff. Might as well spend a little
more and get a lot more with Harwood or Glastek.

Re: [Chevelle-List] 6" Fiberglass Cowl Hood

2003-03-04 Thread Capt Crunch
I have been looking at fiberglass panels and the word out on Unlimited is that it is more for racers that are concerned with saving weight, rather then a good appearance. Harwood seems to be the unaminous choice among people online.   Mikey    - Original Message - From: tjgallant Sent: Monday, March 03, 2003 7:08 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-List] 6" Fiberglass Cowl Hood  All,       I need to get a new 6" cowl induction hood for my '67 Chevelle SS.  I currently have one on my Chevelle, but it's pretty jacked up.  I need that large of one to clear the tunnel ram I am currently running.  The comments I've heard about Unlimited Products haven't been very favorable.  They have a 6" bolt-on fiberglass hood for a '67 Chevelle that sells for $449.       Anyway, is what I've heard about Unlimited Products true?  Why the bad reputation?  Also, is there any other company that makes what I'm looking for?  I really want the cowl induction style (NOT a snorkel or a "hole" in the hood).       Any and all advice is welcome.  Thanks in advance.     Trent Gallant 1967 Chevelle SS"454"
