RE: [Chevelle-List] Q:Posi? (was: Crunching/chewing...!)
Pelle You will have to pull the cover and look for a clutch pack in the carrier assembly along with the spider gears. You have to pull the cover to change the fluid anyway. If you can see something that looks like disks inside, it has posi. The posi additive is a special additive needed to properly lubricate the friction plates in the posi unit itself. Check with you parts supplier for it. Re: [Chevelle-List] 69 El Camino back at home
On some kit car Cobras I've seen, their PSE knockoff wheels had small holes drilled into each spinner tip and a hole drilled in the wheel at strategic locations. The holes are so small that it really isn't noticeable at all. PS Engineering told me their hubs are held to such tight tolerances that safety wire really isn't necessary. I purchased a 5lb dead-blow hammer to keep the spinners torqued tightly. After driving the car 150 miles back home,I checked the torque with the dead-blow and all of the spinners were still tight. Brad's idea of marking them is probably what I will do for now. The spinners have around 300lbs of torque so it's not like they will be constantly coming loose. RE: [Chevelle-List] Q:Posi? (was: Crunching/chewing...!)
Pelle, Positraction (a GM trademark name like Pepsi or Xerox) was available on both 10- and 12-bolt rear ends as well as "open" (or non-posi rear ends) and was optional in most cases. Yes, there is a special Positraction gear lube for them that's different from the open rear ends; they even came from the factory with a silver or red tag (depends on year) either attached to the differential cover or the fill plug itself stating it was a Positraction and to use the special gear lube. [Chevelle-List] Q:Posi? (was: Crunching/chewing...!)
Does a 12-bolt GM diffed rear axel have posi? And what is "posi additive"? This is unknown territory to me at the moment! RE: [Chevelle-List] 69 El Camino back at home
Hi Clint, Glad to hear that it is coming out so well. I'll be tooling around with mine today, doing the brakes, wheel cylinders, brake hoses, axle/wheel bearings & seals. I'm bringing my digital camera and will post some pics later. Today I will also be assessing what to do about the floor. I need to see if I can have my brother fabricate some patch panels (he actually knows how to do that) or if I should just bite the bullet and buy some complete pans. I need to get this question answered before I have the exhaust welded up. It still needs a few more minor things like tires before it will be roadworthy, but hopefully soon. Hopefully I'll even get to a show this year. John Nasta - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [Chevelle-List] 69 El Camino back at home
Hi Clint, Glad to hear you get your Elky home, nice huh? :) Anyway, I was just wondering, what will you run the safety wire to? If you drill a hole in the wheel somewhere, will the knock-off nut line up with the hole in the wheel each time you take the wheel off and on? I thought I remember someone on the Vettenet saying you can get a "socket" that fits the knock-off nut. Might be worth looking in to. Herb Lumpp http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/ Had to stop a couple of times to make sure the knockoffs were tight but they were fine. Still plan to figure out a way to safety wire them for more piece of mind Clint Hooper - To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [Chevelle-List] New SS Hooray!
When I bought an '85 Sunbird the dealer had a little box under the dash that kept the car from starting until you turned on one of the accessories, lights, turn signal, heater switch, etc. I talked him into leaving it on the car when I bought it. I still have it and had it on my Nova and plan to use it on the Chevelle. Not foolproof, but the thief may give up if it won't start right away. I have seen them advertised somewhere. Maybe other dealers have them to discourage theft from their lot and may sell one. Every second counts. You can never make your car, house, or anything else completely theft proof. If someone really wants it, they can get it. About the best you can do is, increase the noise and time it takes to get the item. Time and noise are the downfall of a thief. My attitude is, make it hard enough so the thief will go somewhere else. The club will certainly do that. Tim's response got me to think though. A hidden brake lockout switch. I'm current doing a 53 F100. The lockout is going to be an addition. 1 Timothy 2:5There is only one way - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 27, 2003 11:43 PM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] New SS Hooray! Mr. Mark,I use to drive my Chevelle everyday. Dont get me wrong, I always thought about it when I left it, but I just made sure to park under a light, and away from cars, etc. Im sure everybody has seen the commericals where if the car had a club, they just cut the steering wheel...But I still put on one...People will say whats the point? They are just going to cut the steering wheel and take it off. But you know what? If it takes them an extra 10-15 seconds to get that club off, I feel that its worth it to me. I use the club, and the one the goes on the brake pedal, a hidden kill switch, and I use to have an alarm, till it broke. But, thats my opinion15 seconds is better than no 15 seconds to mejust my two cents. -Tim-1966 Chevelle
RE: [Chevelle-List] Q: Crunching/chewing sound from the rear!
Pelle IF the car has posi you may want to change the rear end fluid. It could be the clutches chattering a bit. Try changing the gear oil and adding the posi additive then do a few figure eights in the parking lot.
