Nice radiator. Looks like something that will get too dirty. But then on the

But where the heck is the other bung for the oil cooler hidden. I see 1 on

[Chevelle-List] leaky windows

2003-07-16 Thread peter vant riet
I'm having trouble with leaking (fixed) windows.
I wonder what's the best thing to do, without pulling 'em out.
The obvious way would be to stuff the gap with acrylatic kit and push the strips back
on.
Then pray it does the job cause afterwards the strips will never come off again.
Another idea might be to spray a layer of ML coating (the clear stuff used in the
doors and panels) in the gap.
This will leave room for ventilation when the strips come on again. Someone told me
this was better...

Does anyone have experience with this (good or bad)?

regards, Peter.

Re: [Chevelle-List] leaky windows

2003-07-16 Thread Mike Holleman
Peter, I don't claim to be an expert on windshields, but I have removed and
replaced several on A-bodys. The pros will generally use a urethane sealant
by 3M to either reseal a windshield or to attempt to stop a leak. If the
leak persists, you will have to take out the window and re-bed it. My
personal preference on a reinstall on an A-Body is to use 3M Butyl Rubber
tape. Either 5/16 or 3/8 thick. This seals well(it was how they did it at
the factory) and it sets the height of the window off the frame and makes
the molding set properly on the windshield. A skilled professional can
accomplish this with Urethane, but I do better with butyl rubber. When
re-setting the glass be sure you have it where you want it when you press it
into the butyl rubber. You only get one shot.
Hope this helps.

I doubt it will fit a long pump big block since it looks like a tight fit

(w/ fans) and I think it was 7.5 overall. This shroud is about .75 high
and the shroud I made for the previous setup was almost flush to the core.
I'm hoping I don't have any clearance issues. This is the third radiator in

[Chevelle-List] Chevelle Mailing List - *major changes*

2003-07-16 Thread Al McKenzie
Title: Message

Notice
of upgrade:
Wehave movedall the chevelles.net accounts to a new server
and the mailing list is moving too.
scheduled for July 17th - 18th

We
have all new software for the list. Instead of majordomo we are going to be
using a program called mailman.

This
new software will help make the list much more enjoyable. Daily digests will be
available for those who wish to keep up with the list but not receive *every*
email individually.

A
personal login area will allow you to change preferences, unsubscribe for
vacations etc.

There
are other features such as holding email accounts that have full mailboxes or
are non-deliverable instead of deleting them as it currently
does.

This
will not be a seamless upgrade. Chances are the list will be down for a day or
two as all the changes take time to travel around the
internet.

I will
post a webpage for everyone to visit and re-subscribe. It is an easy
setup.

Team
Chevelle is hosting many club sites and it's time we upgraded. Some of
theclub sites are using quite a bit of webspace and we needed more
room.

I can
be reached via email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] during
this upgrade should you have any problems.

There
will be a followup email to this one with more information:

The
link will be at: http://www.chevelles.net/mailinglist/

(note
nothing is at that address yet - it's on the new server and will not be
available until after the upgrade)
yes,
it's a loop. we can't add to the list until the new list is
running.

I hate to bore everyone with this story but I'll try to make it as short as
possible...

For quite a while I was using the original 6 cylinder radiator. A couple
days before transferring from St. Pete, FL. to Arlington, VA., I decided to
check the coolant. While the engine was running, I set the rad cap on top
of the rad tank. While I was filling a jug with water, the hood decided to
slam shut. When it did, it knocked the rad cap into the engine driven fan
which then slammed the cap into the radiator core and put a decent size hole
in it. Hallelujah, I have a valid excuse to buy that aluminum Griffin
radiator I've always wanted!

After I got to VA, I ordered a new Griffin with 1.25 tubes. Naturally the
bigger tubes were custom order only and I had to wait 5 or 6 weeks to get
it. When it finally arrived I was in a hurry (first mistake) to install it
but my wife had other plans and I told her it would only take a few minutes
(second mistake).

A long time ago when I was upgrading things on my Vette, I switched from an
engine driven fan to dual electric ZR-1 fans. Because I hadn't upgraded the
alternator I had ongoing electrical problems because of the fans. I
eventually sorted it all out and the fans now work great. Anyway, I wanted
to avoid that problem with the Elky and I chose to use an engine driven fan.
Because we all know a fan needs a shroud to work right, I ordered a plastic
reproduction shroud (third mistake).

In my rush to get my cool Griffin (no pun intended) installed, I didn't
notice the tight fit between the fan blades and the cheesy shroud (fourth
mistake). After everything was in place I jumped in the Elky and fired her
up. Less than a minute into the engine running, I hear this very loud
shriek (kinda like when you drag your fingernails down a chalkboard) and the
engine stopped running like it seized up.

Much to my dismay, when I looked under the hood, a couple of the fan blades
had impaled themselves into the core Apparently the clearance between
the fan blade tips and the shroud was too small and when I revved the engine
(it was cold) the fans blades hit the shroud and bent back into the core so
hard it killed the engine.

My wife and I have been together since '91 and she's never gotten mad at me
before no matter how stupid I was or what I did. But let me tell you, when
you destroy a $800 radiator in less than a minute after installing it, I
don't think mad even begins to describe my wife at that moment.
Definitely not something I want to repeat any time soon!

Anyway, because I didn't have $800 to blow on another Griffin I opted to
down grade and I bought a copper/brass Desert Cooler from U.S. Radiators.
It only cost $400 so it was a deal. Since my wife is the coolest ever, she
knew I wasn't happy with the copper radiator and she told me to order
another aluminum rad if I really wanted it.

Another $800 later brings us to today - I have a new Ron Davis Racing
Radiator with a fan shroud and aluminum overflow tank. Sitting in my garage
without a home is a Griffin that has been repaired (even though the repair
is ugly) and a slightly used Desert Cooler.

So now you're all up to speed on my most costly mistake yet!

Sorry,Herb. I forgot you and Carol had told me about the Griffin rad episode
at CB'03.g
Next question;did you pay $600 or $800 for the Ron Davis set-up? Is the
Desert Cooler rad for sale,now?
Now I'm left wondering if I could run a Ron Davis rad similiar to yours on
my 69 with a short water pump.

I hate to bore everyone with this story but I'll try to make it as short
as
 possible...
For quite a while I was using the original 6 cylinder radiator. A couple
days before transferring from St. Pete, FL. to Arlington, VA., I decided
to
check the coolant. While the engine was running, I set the rad cap on top
of the rad tank. While I was filling a jug with water, the hood decided
to
slam shut. When it did, it knocked the rad cap into the engine driven fan
which then slammed the cap into the radiator core and put a decent size
hole
in it. Hallelujah, I have a valid excuse to buy that aluminum Griffin
 radiator I've always wanted!
After I got to VA, I ordered a new Griffin with 1.25 tubes. Naturally
the
bigger tubes were custom order only and I had to wait 5 or 6 weeks to get
it. When it finally arrived I was in a hurry (first mistake) to install
it
but my wife had other plans and I told her it would only take a few
minutes
 (second mistake).

A long time ago when I was upgrading things on my Vette, I switched from
an
engine driven fan to dual electric ZR-1 fans. Because I hadn't upgraded
the
alternator I had ongoing electrical problems because of the fans. I
eventually sorted it all out and the fans now work great. Anyway, I
wanted
to avoid that problem with the Elky and I chose to use an engine driven
fan.
Because we all know a fan needs a shroud to work right, I ordered a
plastic
 reproduction shroud (third mistake).

In my rush to get my cool Griffin (no pun intended) installed, I didn't
notice the tight fit between the fan blades and the cheesy shroud (fourth
mistake). After everything was in place I jumped in the Elky and fired
her
up. Less than a minute into the engine running, I hear this very loud
shriek (kinda like when you drag your fingernails down a chalkboard) and
the
engine stopped running like it seized up.

Much to my dismay, when I looked under the hood, a couple of the fan
blades
had impaled themselves into the core Apparently the clearance between
the fan blade tips and the shroud was too small and when I revved the
engine
(it was cold) the fans blades hit the shroud and bent back into the core
so
 hard it killed the engine.

My wife and I have been together since '91 and she's never gotten mad at
me
before no matter how stupid I was or what I did. But let me tell you,

The RD radiator was $500, the shroud was $100, and I also bought an aluminum
overflow tank for $89, plus shipping naturally. All together it was
$737.79.

Yes the Desert Cooler is for sale. Like I said, I paid $400 for it so if
anyone wants it I wouldn't mind getting $200.

Looks very nice indeed. What is the total thickness of the unit from
the front mount to the end of the fans? Wish I had the room for a setup
like that with a long pump big block. :*( Just don't have the clearance
for electric fans.
