As for most of the swaps having junk, I always

Hi Pete,

When I first put my Vette together, I used 2.5 Dynomax Ultraflow mufflers.
They sounded very good and had a nice rumble without sounding tinny but at
the time were too quiet for my taste. I ended up switching to a pair of two
chamber Flowmasters, which by the way, I getting tired of.

On the other hand, I have 3.5 in/3 out Spin Tech truck/rv mufflers on my
El Camino. Even though these mufflers are pretty loud, I love how my Elky
sounds.

Let's say you wanted the sound of an early 60's 327 w/ factory duals.
What would you use?
To my ears Flowmaster is out.
So are glass packs.
Maybe a pair of the quiet turbo mufflers you see in Summit or Jeg's?

RE: [Chevelle-list] Carlisle and other swapmeets in general

2004-04-24 Thread Cutter
For the most part, I'd have to agree. The last one I was at, there were more
sellers then buyers and most of the stuff belonged in the scrap yard -
unless you like collecting mid-70s vintage small block, cast iron, intake
manifolds. That being said, you'll always find that diamond in the rough,
you just have to look hard enough.

There are just a couple things I've been looking for, namely a 12 bolt for
the '66, but I'll be damn if I'm going to pay $1,000 for something I'm going
to have to put another $500-$600 into to get it right. Better off buying a
Currie or Moser. Of course, I've maybe only seen a handful of 12 bolts in
the last four or five swap meets I've been to and all have been for '68 to
72's.

I look at this the same as the down fall of the local speed shop. It's not
just the internet/mail order companies that killed them, but I think a lot
has to do with how the hobby has changed and their inability/desire to
change with it.

Let's face it, 20 years ago there were more of us interested in, and working
on 60's and 70's muscle cars. Case and point is to drive by a high school
parking lot and see what's there. Not much vintage iron, at least not by
most of our standards. Back in the day there were more of us, companies
where making parts for us and the parts could easily be found. My fear is
that the more time that passes, the worse it will get.

All that said, I was actually looking forward to going to the Coy Swap Meet
at Bandimere today, but with the snow we got on Friday, it'll probably get
called. It's still fun to get around car guys and to look for that hidden
treasure. You see that guy pulling his kid's radio flyer with something cool
in it and kick your self for not finding it first (I got my boy a flyer two
Xmas's ago and my wife saw right through it - guess I took her to too many
swap meets..).

RE: [Chevelle-list] Stereo Wiring

2004-04-24 Thread Crazy Rusty
Just FYI, I found the factory runner to go in my 69 Chevelle for $20 at
www.dansgarage.net. It's a junkyard in eastern Washington that I stopped by
quite awhile ago. Tons of chevelles, camaros, and elcy's. Most of them
stacked on top of one another but there are a lot of spare parts. A long
time ago, when everyone and there brother seemed to be looking for the '69
350 fender emblem and no one was carrying it because it was sold out, I got
two originals from this place that looked brand new.

Has anyone found a place to get that factory runner? I figured I would get
the same runner as on the driver side and run it down the passenger side for
the speaker wires...

Thanks for all the info!

Running the speaker wires down the pass side keeps
them away from the power wires that run through the
factory harness. The power wire (fuzed!) should run
along the driver side away from the speaker wire too.

Doing this helps keep the whining noise out of the
stereo. It's not a requirement, but can definitely
prevent future headaches!

Ditto what he said about powering the amp directly
 from the battery *with
a fuse*. Also, use a good heavy gauge wire for it
 (10-gauge or better if
 you can).

I don't quite understand the explanation for
 running the wires down the
passenger side though, as opposed to driver's. I've
 always just gone the
path of easiest-installation. Damon, can you
 elaborate a little on the
 passenger side thing?

The amp should have a main power input (from the
 battery) a ground, and a
remote-power-on lead. There should be a
 corresponding power lead from your
head unit. (or a lead meant for a power antenna).
 It's basically a
relay -- a low-power signal from the head unit to
turn the amp on, so that
you're not directly switching the main power, which
 would require a
 heavy-duty switch.

If the previous owner's amp was powering 4
 speakers, putting it under the
passenger seat might not be a bad choice, since
wires would have to be run
back to the front for the front speakers, and also
 shorten the length of the
main power lead and also the RCA cables with the
 pre-amp signal. It might
not be the best place for airflow to keep the amp
 cool, though.

I'm no installer either, but I've wired up a few
 stereos with amps and
 have had good success.

If you are going to use an amp I have always
been told that you must run
the power wire from the battery (with a fuse) and
 the remote wire down the
drivers side. The ground should be has short has
 possible. If you are
running front speakers, the wires should be run down
 the passengers side.
Doing this cuts down on engine noise through the
 speakers. I have a Sony
radio, CD changer, and 2 amps with no engine noise.
 Has far has the
kickpanel speakers, I can't help you there, but hope
the rest is. I am not
an installer but I have learned a few things since I
 got into car audio
 years back.

Whoever owned my car before me installed a
 new stereo with
a small amp under the passenger seat and a
 cd changer in
the back. I took out all the carpet so I
 could get ready
for the new stuff I am about to order and
 found that the
wiring is a complete mess. There are wires
 going
everywhere, at least one of the wires has
 three splices
