RE: [Chevelle-list] PCV/Crankcase venting
The reason I went to the exhaust crankcase evac system Fred, is because the valve covers I'm using didn't have any baffles to keep from sucking oil through the PCV system. Before I plumbed the valve covers to the exhaust I designed baffles for the valve covers which must work pretty good since there's no oil in the exhaust pipes. At first I wasn't sure how well it would work but now I'm pretty happy with it. If I remove one of the valve covers lines while the engine is running, at idle you can actually feel suction on the hose if you put your finger over it. If it sucks like that at idle I'm sure there's negative pressure in the crank case when the rpm goes up, which is a good thing. How new is your Demon carb? Does it have the Idle-Eze base plate? http://www.bgfuel.com/demon/default.aspx?page=10 If not, you can buy it separately and update your carb and it should help you with your adjustment problem. However, this has been happening with a brand new Speed Demon 750/Vac sec, and, subsequently, with a brand new Holley 750 dbl pumper. I 'd been planning on the switch to the Holley anyway, and I had thought that the problem was with the Demon, even though it was brand new. This all started when I went from a breather on each valve cover to the PVC settup which I outlined in my 1st post. Herb, you have a really nice venting system, I believe with a source from each valve cover going your exhaust. This seems essentially similar to what I had proposed, except I was going into the carb. Right? Thanks, Fred On Jan 26, 2005, at 1:16 PM, Herb Lumpp wrote: Hi Fred, Try this: completely remove the idle mixture screws, then use compressed air to blow out the passages on the carb. Reinstall the screws and try it again. Sometimes there is debris in the passages and it won't let you adjust the carb. The engine acts like there is a vacum leak, in that when I adjust the (carb) idle mixture there is no change in the way the engine idles. I recall when just I used 2 breathers this was not the case. Then when I adjusted the mixture the engine responded. With the current system, am I just sucking air in through the breather, through the crankcase, and then up through the PCV valve and ultimately into the carb vacum tube and manifold? Should I have a PVC valve on each valve cover, both Teed into the carb vacum? Thanks for any input, Fred Dowaliby
Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 - manual tranny, firewall pics ?
Steve, I can go out and snap some pictures of my ' 69 firewall for you. It's still in it's original condition, nothing has been "smoothed". I don't know if it makes any difference to you or not but my ' 69 has the 3-speed Muncie (MC1). I will e-mail them to you off list. Hope they're what you're looking for. Guys, I need a little help. I pulled the plug-in connector out of the back of my alternator last night the 40 year old plastic fell apart in my hand. I need to patch something up to get the car to a friends shop dont know which wire plugs onto which post. My car is a 65 with an external regulator setup so theres a blue wire a black with white stripe. If youre staring at the back of the alternator the tab on the missing plug is supposed to go toward the top of the hole, which wire goes to which side? Thanks, Dean Vandergriff
[Chevelle-list] OT, sort of
Hi guys. I am working on an '87 S-10 Blazer for a friend of mine. The manual says there is a fuse for the fuel pump in the engine compartment, and I cannot find it. Does anyone have any idea where I should look? It has me stumped. I realize this is not Chevelle related, but it is Chevy, and I thought maybe someone on the list may have faced this before. When the fellow did the original restoration on my 1968 SS there must have been a sale on gloss black paint, 'cause everything under the hood and cowl and dash was painted with it. So now I'm getting anal about the colors on the car I need to know what color the wiper linkage, arms, and drive link on the wiper motor were. Thanks for the help. BL
