RE: [Chevelle-list] Must dos with engine out of car

2005-06-01 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

How many miles are on the engine? Do you know it's history? If you don't
know the history, or know it's been a lot of years or lot of miles, it
might be worth a tear down and inspection, and replacement of most gaskets
at minimum. Timing chain gears and new head gaskets are always good
maintenance on an engine with some miles and/or age. Also a water pump if
it hasn't been changed in a while would be easy while the engine was out.

 I've pulled the engine ('66 SS with a non-stock 454) for a number of
minor
reasons -- the engine is not being torn down but needed to be out of the
way. It has been separated from the transmission (non-stock 4-speed of
as-yet unkown heritage) which is still in the car. Have been hunting web
sites and rebuild books looking for answers to no avail (well, a
little)
-- the question is this: what basic maintenance/replacement should be
done
once the engine and trans are separated?

I'm assuming at least a couple of seals, new clutch related, mounts for
engine and trans (already done)...and other stuff. I don't want to put
the
engine back in only to find a cheap part (relatively speaking) and a
little
time now would have saved multiple headaches and many $$$ later.

 Thoughts welcome!

It was pointed out that getting those big tires on and off can be a
challenge.

Should have mentioned that.
Jacking under pumpkin on rear axle doesn't work, maybe not even for the
stock wheels and tires.

Bumper jack will probably not work either.(on wide tires)
Pretty much have to raise car so axle drops all the way to end of shock
travel.
If I was really driving anywhere I think I'd downsize tire a bit so I
could get it on and off along side of road.

Carry fix-a-flat, or join AAA, unless you have a buddy with a rollback.

Replace the clutch ? Always resurface the flywheel or I will guarantee
  you will get clutch chatter.

Here's a bit of info for you:

Also note the link to www.team67.com in that page. Dale might have
more info than I have by now.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Transmission support bar location?

John,

On my '68 frame there are 8 holes per side. Counting from the front of
the car - you'll need to use holes #6 #7.

I have a 69 SS with a TH-400 and the transmission is out of the car, but
I want to put the transmission support bar back on the frame. I have
sandblasted and painted the frame and forget which set of holes to use
to attach the trans support bar to on the frame. Can anyone tell me
which holes to use?

Thanks.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Another e-bay one... update

2005-06-01 Thread Krister Meister

I asked the how can you prove it's an SS question - playing on the dumb
side. Seller apparently got bent that so many people had emailed him
questioning the car that he added a revised description to the auction. I
told him people are busting you because you are trying to pass this off for
something it is not and the description is elusive. Nothing wrong with a
clone, but don't call it a real SS.
