When you get the hole just right you have to
stick a small pin in it. a paper clip might be small enough.

Switch Help!!

I just bought a new ignition switch and a new
lock set for my 66. Being the curious fiddler that I am, I was
sitting here at the office messing around with it, and got the tumbler
in the ignition just fine.

Can somebody tell me how I get the tumbler back
our?!?!?!?!? I'm guessing it has something to  do with putting the key
in, turning it counter-clockwise to the ACC position so the little hole is
over the sping loaded button in the ignition switch

Help!!

[Chevelle-list] Help with seals on 9" rear

2005-10-14 Thread John Usher
Title: Message

I am
putting together a new Moser 9" rear end for my 69SS. I know I need some
kind of seal installer for the seals that go in the rear axle. I already screwed
up one set of seals trying the large socket and hammer. I need a seal installer,
but would like to know what one looks like so I make sure I get the right thing.

Does
anybody have any hints or recomendations on the best way to go about installing
these?

Thanks.

2005-10-14 Thread Craig Ellis

I spotted an Elco for sale in Smiths Creek, MI, last night on the way home
from my son's Cub Scout meeting. If anyone's interested, I'll go check it out in
the daylight. Looked pretty good from 50 yards - stock rims, two-tone paint
(looked like white topsides with a burgundy wrap-around at the stone chip
beltline. I'm in the market for an Elco but I can't keep two cars around so I'll
be letting this one go by.

Well said.  And if you get the looks of admiration & thumbs up that I get on the road, being a Chevelle Snob is not a bad thing.  I'd like my engine to stay together for a while.  Gone are the days when we were hot rod/shade tree kids and we could blow it and rebuild it by the following weekend!

I decided years ago when I put a 6500 RPM cam in my BB motor that I'd eyeball limit to 6000. I'm not draggin' for money and I'd just as soon not grenade my 1970 vintage block just to spank some yahoo with three earings and a '98 Mustang. If I can't git 'r done with 6k, well, I'll have to accept it.

Besides, it doesn't matter how fast some lesser car goes - mine is a Chevelle with fatblock and a Muncie - that makes it more better by definition.

Yeah, me too.  I've also always been careful of hitting rev limiters on other cars I've owned.  I am considering a rev limiter for the Chevelle, but have always wonder if a rev limiter can cause harm to an engine as well?  Or is it just fouled plugs at worst?  Does anyone have an opinion on that?Of course, even if the rev limiter caused some damage, it's probably not as serious as over revving an engine I'm sure.  There's no KABOOM! when you hit a rev limiter.  Just wondering if there might be long term harm. Thanks,MattAt 11:29 AM 10/13/2005, you wrote:

It's a "bad thing"...especially if the piston slaps a valve. That's one of the reasons valve seat spring load is important and why you match springs to cam, etc. Craig E.

Well I am 41, been around cars my whole life and have not heard the term "float the valves"  doesn't sound like a good thing to do, but what is it?  My guess - depressing clutch to shift, but intenially not taking your foot off the gas?

When I was in the Air Force (66-70) a friend had a red Chevelle SS with
396/350hp.  It was a beautiful car and what I always remember was he liked to
shift when the valves would float.  I was amazed that it stayed together since a
high school friend had a 63 Impalla (1963) with 409/425hp that would float the
valves when he missed a shift and it would usually end up back at the Chevy
dealer to replace bent pushrods and other assorted parts.

Back in fall of 64 at York US 30 Dragway in PA I saw Malcom Durham match race Ronnie Sox.  Malcom was in a 65 Chevelle, I think it was Strip Blazer III, and Sox was in a Comet or a Mopar.  I forget because I was focused on the Chevelle.  Sox won the first round.  Malcom blew him away on the second round & sucked a valve going through the lights.  Match race over for the night.  I've been hooked on 65's ever since!  The following April I ordered an L-79 4speed SS.  I'm on my 4th one today.  Phil G.  Old fart too.
