[Chevelle-list] 68 Glove Box Lock

2005-12-16 Thread Kevin Riel

Hello,

I'm trying the get the lockset
out of the glove box lid on my 68 El Camino in order to paint. I've done
several of these before, and usually there is a small hole to insert a pin into
to release the lock set after the key has been inserted. There is no such
hole in this lock set, and probing and pushing on slots in the rear of the lock
mechanism doesn't seem to work either. Does anyone know how to release
it? Thanks in advance.

[Chevelle-list] Ididit?

2005-12-16 Thread Dan Mascheck
I just returned a Flaming River Tilt Column because it didn't have an
ignition switch on the column. I called Ididit and theirs did, plus I could
get it powder coated, while the FR unit was just paint able. FR said I could
have either the dimmer switch or cruise control, but not both. Ididit said I
could have both! I sent the FR unit back and got the Ididit with the dimmer
switch and the cruise control for my 72 Chevelle.

Has anyone used an Ididit column?

Merry Christmas!!

  Dan

RE: [Chevelle-list] Ididit?

2005-12-16 Thread Dale
I had an Ididit in my 67 SS, tilt version but not with ignition switch since
the 67 didn't need it. Fit pretty good considering the 67 was a one-off
year. Had it in the car for 2 or 3 years before selling the car and didn't
have any problems with it.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 68 Glove Box Lock

2005-12-16 Thread Rick Schaefer
Kevin
Try this, I found it at chevelles.com (where else!) thru a google search.
http://www.chevelles.com/archive/files/gboxlk.html

Glove box lock removal

K.B. - It's not obvious to me how to remove the lock from the glove box door onmy 68. I don't see any clips or screws. What's the magic trick?

J.H. - Take it to a locksmith thats what I did it cost me a six pack of bud and hetold me to bring it back after it's painted and he will put it back on for freeILL bring him a long neck any way

D.C. - Kirk, don't pop off the chrome knob ! With the door open, push the small latch fork up to simulate a closed position. Turn the key counter clockwise to the locked position. Look down between the door and the latch and you will see a flat tumbler about 3/16 wide. and 1/16 thick. Depress the tumbler in to release the lock cylinder while pulling out on the key/cylinder.
Once you get the cylinder out there is a thimble that holds the lock to the door which screws out from the front with a BIG allen wrench.I think on non locking types there is a hole to insert a paper clip into, which allows you torotate the knob backwards to gain access to the release tumbler.( not sure about that )
Like Joe said, if you can't get it out, a local lock smith will probably remove it for you for a few bucks. I
Gary - You don't need a key to take the lock apart. Open the door and pull the latch up into the closed position and then pull it even farther ( as far as it will go and then hold it in this position). Take a small nail or paper clip and insert it in the small slot ( located at about the 3 O' Clock Position ) in the back of the cylinder casing. There will be 3 or 4 spring loaded small metal keys (don't know the correct name for them) that you will need to depress one at a time while pulling on the outer chrome bezel. As you get by one another will catch and you will need to depress it to get by it. Remember, while doing this you must be holding (or wire it) the latching arm all the way up as far as it goes. As you get by the last key? the cylinder will pull all the way out. Then you can unscrew the threaded part that holds the casing to the door.
Good Luck See the how to pictures from Gene McGill's - adobe pdf
