Re: [Chevelle-list] Fram Mounts

2006-01-02 Thread malibu

I have a 65 that had the SBC mounts.

I bought the BBC Frame mounts thinking they were different.

They are the same height, size, use the same motor mounts, etc...

The only difference is that the big block ones have an indent, that appears
to do nothing.  As far as a '65 goes.  You can use the same mounts for
either BBC or SBC.  Physically they are the same, cosmetically they are
different.

307's use their own frame and motor mounts.  If you put any other
small block (350, 400) in an original 307 car, you need to use 307 mounts as
they bolt right up to a 350.  If you want to put a big block
(396/454/502) in an original 307 car, you need to change the frame
mounts.  If you have an original 350 car, or an original big block car,
you can use the original frame mounts to put in any small block other than a
  307 or big block.

Ron,

I don't know about cruises in Venice, but if you
can work your way north maybe 3 hours to Kissimmee (next to Disney), You should
check out Old Town. Every Saturday, pre 1972 cars start showing up mid
afternoon. Lots of classics, custom rods and muscle cars. There's carnival rides
for the kids, shopping for the ladies, live band playing oldies, and 200+ cars
every Saturday, Most arrive 4 or 5ish, and they all cruise at 8:30 pm. No
cover to get in.

I had a chevelle one time that had a tall intake and I
guess a taller than stock air cleaner. I took the frame mounts off of the thing
and sat the motor mounts down on the frame and took some thick washers and cut
one side flat, put the bolts through the motor mounts and washers and
welded the washers to the frame. Gave me a little over an inch more clearance.
Never had any problems with it far as I could tell. I know the motor is supposed
to sit with the back a little lower but I never noticed any difference. Crazy
what I used to do when I was young and didn't know any better...

As I said in a previous post, I ordered BB engine mounts for my 396.
It wouldn't fit the frame mounts without maybe 1/2 inch of shimming. I took a
frame mount off and went to another auto parts store. I asked for a set of BB
engine mounts. Same problem. I had to buy a set of motor mounts identified for
a 327 to avoid shimming. I just figured whomever owned my 66 at one time of
other changed the engine and put in a SBC... now you guys are telling me
there's no difference, but John (I think) posted that he too had to shim...

Ultimately, I just need to have my engine sit as low as possible so I can
use my stock SS hood. Any word of wisdom?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Alignment shims

2006-01-02 Thread D.R. Jones

John,

When I do a complete front end and paint or powdercoat everything I
always put the old shims back in for the drive to the alignment shop.
Course the old shims look like crap with rust so I ask them to put all
new shims in for the look, since I use the same shop for all alignments
they do it with no problem. Ever so often I run across one that would
be a problem driving even with the old shims in place, then have to
break out the trailer. Nothing looks better then a newly rebuilt
powdercoated front end, unless it is something else.

According to the Collins Foundation website that owns and tours the old

I would put them back in there to get it to an alignment shop.  Yes,
it will be off, but it's better than having nothing in there.  If you put
no shims in and you go to drive it, it could possibly destroy your tires in the
short distance it may be to the shop, therefore your tires will never wear
properly causing other problems such as wheel shimmy, pulling left or right,
etc.

I used to do alignments and it is easier if the shims

the shims back in the upper contol arm cross shafts and to just
tighten themp up and take it to him and he will replace the shims as
neededI have read that you are to keep the shims and put them back in

drive to the shop.
I was wondering which way to go with

307's use their own frame and motor mounts.  If you put any other
small block (350, 400) in an original 307 car, you need to use 307 mounts as
they bolt right up to a 350.  If you want to put a big block

Re: [Chevelle-list] Fram Mounts

2006-01-02 Thread Larry Shouse

As I said in a previous post, I ordered BB engine mounts for my 396.
It wouldn't fit the frame mounts without maybe 1/2 inch of shimming. I took a
frame mount off and went to another auto parts store. I asked for a set of BB
engine mounts. Same problem. I had to buy a set of motor mounts identified for a
327 to avoid shimming. I just figured whomever owned my 66 at one time of other
changed the engine and put in a SBC... now you guys are telling me there's no
difference, but John (I think) posted that he too had to shim...

Ultimately, I just need to have my engine sit as low as possible so I can
use my stock SS hood. Any word of wisdom?

My 66 came with a set of frame mounts already in
place. I picked up a pair of engine mounts, and found the gap where the frame
mount hump goes to be too wide. I would have to shim like 1/2 inch total to use
them. I took one of the frame mounts off and went to the parts store to see what
would fit. I ended up getting a set identified to work with a 327.

I remember from a previous thread here either the
SBC or the BBC mounts makes the engine sit a bit lower. Can someone tell me
which is which?

  mounts?

Externally, a small block Chevy is a small
block Chevy.  I've swapped numerous engines over the years, the only time
I've had to change the frame mounts was when I put a V8 where a 6 was.
With that said, my El is the only A-body I've owned, most of my cars
prior to this were either Camaros or Corvettes and I never had to change frame
mounts (except for the 6 to V8 swap).  Is the frame mount an A-body only
  issue?

  Just curious, thanks.

Was your car originally a 307 car?  If so, then yes, you will need

I hope each made it thru all the holidays in good fashion. I hope
everyone gets to finish their projects and/or start new ones in this new
year. Dale welcome to the ranks of the retired, now you will find out
you never have enough time to do anything and will want to go back to
work to 'rest up'. I will try to finish two projects this year and am
looking forward to it. Also on my April birthday already have plans to
drive up to Wichita Falls, TX and get a (paid) ride on a B-24 Liberator,
hope that works out.

Anyway, everyone have a very good New Year.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Fram Mounts

2006-01-02 Thread Herb Lumpp

I've seen this discussion numerous times
before, but now I have to ask...  Why does a 307 use unique frame
mounts?

Externally, a small block Chevy is a small
block Chevy.  I've swapped numerous engines over the years, the only time
I've had to change the frame mounts was when I put a V8 where a 6 was.
With that said, my El is the only A-body I've owned, most of my cars prior
to this were either Camaros or Corvettes and I never had to change frame mounts
(except for the 6 to V8 swap).  Is the frame mount an A-body only
issue?

Just curious, thanks.

I know we have talked about these before but
one more question.  The small block frame mounts on my chevelle
are 2" tall.  I am looking at getting the big block frame mounts and
the guy says that they are 1 5/8" tall.  Does this sound right?  I
know that I can use the small block mounts but I just have a gut feeling
that I need to use the big block mounts.  If anybody has the big block
mounts can you measure them and let me know how tall they are?  Thank
you and hope all of you had a happy holiday week.

Was your car originally a 307 car?  If so, then yes, you will need
to change the mounts.  307 mounts are slightly taller than 350/402/454
  mounts.

[Chevelle-list] Metallic Drum Brake Shoes

2006-01-02 Thread John

Does anyone on the list know where I can find the
J52 option "sintered iron brake shoes" for drum brakes.  I used them back
in the 60's on a Chevelle and got 90+ thousand miles and good stops with
them.

Yes they work well if your window area is not too
rusty.  Just bought some more for the 64 SS Malibu I recently got.
Boy the back window area is sure a problem on these cars.  The one I had in
1964 had same problem by 1972.
