[Chevelle-list] off topic garage lighting

2006-11-03 Thread HarKemAsso

hi wondering if there are any electricians out there who know if this is
true, a salesman told my friend he could switch his fluorescent lights from a
T12 to a T8 type of light and he could save $1179.00 a year on his light bill
and have more light with the same ammt of fixtures (13). I priced the
fixtures out and they are 24.00 more per light (twin 8' tube) or 6.00 more per
light for a 4-tube- 4' bulblight. I need about 90 of them for my shop so
the cost on the light fixtures would be a lot more, but if this savings on
lighting bills is true maybe it would be worth it??
(my friend owns a small muffler shop so the lights are on at least 8 hours
a day). they claim the wattage on his fixtures are 490, and the new fixtures are
166.

thanks for the help.

What does electricity
cost where you are? I madea few worst case assumptions
here.

Six day workweek with a
few days off for holidays is about 300 days a year?
490 watts x12 hours
x300 days = 1,764 KWH per year
166 watts x12 hours
x 300 days = 598 KWH per year

So, If electricity is $1
per KWH, then you could save the thousand+ dollars. If electricity is
$0.10 per KWH, then you will save $115 per year. I have no idea what the
cost of power might be for you, but I would not consider this unless the payoff
was less than five years, as the life of the bulbs may be less than that.
You will be helping the environment and society by not using as much power, but
the direct economic costs to you should win out.

Check out the electricity
costs and the assumptions for the power (time and days), and you can adjust
these numbers accordingly.

Harlan,

 I
do lighting design work for a fluorescent fixture manufacturer.
There is more than one type of both T12 T8 lamps. If your friend is
using an F96T12HO lamp, two of them have a system wattage of 216 watts around
9000 lumens per lamp. F96T12 slimline is actually a 75 watt lamp
with a system wattage of 158 around 6300 lumens per lamp.
These are both 8, T12 lamps my wattage figures are based on
magnetic ballasts (most likely for older fixtures). Incidentally, both of
these lamp types are rated for 12000 hours per lamp.

 T8
slimline lamps are a 59 watt lamp have a system wattage for two lamps of
110 watts, are rated at 5950 lumens per lamp, a 20,000 hour life. The
86 watt T8 HO has a system wattage of 160 watts, 8200 lumens per lamp,
18,000 hour life.

 The
4, 32 watt T8 lamp is rated for 20,000 hour life you can operate 4
of them on a single ballast at 114 watts 2950 lumens each.

 All
of my figures for the T8 lamps are based on solid state, electronic ballasts.
Four of these is a good replacement for two of the 8ft, T8 slimline
lamps. You can get the same light output at about the same energy
cost youre buying a less expensive lamp thats easier to
store dispose of since its only a 4 lamp.

 Bottom
line, be sure of what youre comparing. You could replace T12HO
with T8 slimline fixtures save about 50% on electricity, but then youd
only end up with about 2/3 of the light that you started with.

There you go, an even better answer than I made, because you have real

 Dan
not sure if this applies to the LT1, but on earlier (post 87) sbc's the
displacement was cast into the bell housing flange near the distributor.
IE 5.7 or 5.0 . I know the LT1 doesn't use a traditional distributor but they
do have a bellhousing flange (LOL).

Does anybody have the Dupont and PPG numbers for 65 paint code E?
