Re: [Chevelle-list] Rear Sway Bar

2007-02-25 Thread TinIndian47

Thanks for the ideas on the sway bar. I have another question, I have the
original bar on the front of the 65 SS, should I look for a larger one to
replace it with, If so what size should it be, I have been told not to go to
large.

I never thought about asking if anyone had a set of boxed control arms
laying around they would like to sell. If anyone has a set please let me know,
I
would like to purchase them, also a sway bar .

Thanks again for the help, Darrell

  Hello List:
While we are on the subject of lists, I have a question. The Chevelle club
that I belong to has a list somewhat like this on Yahoo. The problem is nobody
uses it correctly most of the time.If one wants to ask everyone a question I
have no problem. But usually it will go something like this, "How many of the
committee members will be showing up the meeting?" Instead of emailing the show
committee, the President emails the entire mailing list. Then everyone on the
committee will answer using that subject line. Then one of them emails back
with "Hey I can't come because its my 50th birthday". Then instead of changing
the subject line everyone answers saying "Happy Birthday" or whatever. So then
a simple "Who is coming to the meeting " turns into 25-30 nonsense emails. Is
there a way to let them know this is annoying and he should be emailing certain
people instead of to the group without offending them ?

Don't get me wrong, the Chevelle List is pretty good about not doing this.
Would emailing the list moderator be the best solution and explain to him the
problem? I value everyone's opinion and would appreciate some input. Now the
problem is this, Does everyone on the list want to hear about this or should I
ask you to email me directly ?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Rear Sway Bar

2007-02-25 Thread Jim H. Thompson
I boxed my stock arms, used poly bushings, and sway bar from Just
Suspension. I also dropped the rear totally out from the car. Someone on
this list has a stock set of control arms they are willing to part with. My
advice is to prepare them before you drop your rear. You need to drop the
rear because the top bushing in your axel housing are very hard to remove. I
drove mine out with a 9 pound sledge hammer. You can torch the rubber out
then collapse the sleeve with an air chisel. The sway bar is attached with a
load on the rear (jack stands on the axel) so put it on last. All the bolts
on the control arms should be a little loose. Install the sway bar and
tighten to specs on the lower control arm. Then you tork the bolts on the
control arms to 65 foot lbs. Good luck! If you want some pics I'll send
them direct.

I need some advice. I have a 65 SS that when I turn the cars roles real bad,
I took the air shocks off and installed Gabriel coil overs hoping this would
help. It did in that it lifted the car up but not much in the rolling.

I am now looking at installing a rear sway bar. I have looked at several and
need some help. I have looked at 3 different sway bars and installation.
Addco has one that will install on my control arms without having to box
them or replace them with boxed arms. I can get the kit with the bar and the
pieces to box the arm from OPGI. Then there is buying new boxed arms and
getting the sway bar to go with them.

I like the Addco bar but concerned about not having boxed arms. Has anybody
had any experience with these or know about them? I have just about filled
that deep hole with money that I have been pouring into.

getting to where I will have to decide on wife or the car. I am finding out
I can't work on this one as easy as I did my 64 SS, I guess 40 years will
make a difference. A lot more fun at 19 or 20 than 60, a lot easier getting
up and down.

This is a power glide that has been converted to 4 speed..

Any thing to help is appreciated, Thanks, darrell

Darrell,
I used the ADDCO bar for years and it did the job.
The mounting plates did show signs of moving on the control arms though.
Might have been better to get the bar installed, checked out, and then have the
metal plates welded to the control arms.
I think my next bar will be a factory style set up using the reinforcing plates
or new arms.
It'll look less cobbled together that way too.
If you still have the stock skinny front bar and rubber bushings it'd be a good
idea to replace the front bar too.
btw: If you had the rear jacked up, that was likely aggravating the roll
problem.
