not going the whole Pro Street route. (at least not now) For now I'd be
keeping it mostly stock except for the back-half. I'm in Chicagoland. (western
suburbs). Can any members out there recommend a quality shop? I'd want to drop
the car off pick it up when it's finished. Any idea on the turn around
time on this? What the labor costs might be?
I got Chris Alston's catalog and he seems toimply they do it for

Eddie

I got mine (just lucky I guess) off of eBay for 40 dollars most of it was
shipping, just don't forget new bushings. there are kits out there from
several sources to box your own, just pull yours and take them to your
local
welder/muffler shop. There are also as you've heard boxed arms available
out
there, and even adjustable arms if you are so inclined. I found mine to
make

a world of difference. my tail end was awful sloppy before I converted to
boxed control arms. the handling is really sweet, no more unintentional
fishtailing. great fairly cheap handling improvement for my almost daily
driver.

hope this helps

stay with. I have a 350 SB and 350 tranny street and freeway driver.

Well I pulled it apart and inspected the pump and found a piece of metal
like some part of a retainer clip wedged against the bottom of the gears in
the oil pump. also some small pieces in the gears. the oil pump shaft on the
end where the dist goes on is cracked. I inspected the lifters all OK. The
roller rockers OK the timing gears and chain look new I did find some
surface rust on the bottom of the cylinders where the pistons don't ride
like it was the motor was sitting for a long time. the bearings look good. I
pulled 4 caps and 2 mains all looks good. I am going to put in new bearings
seeing I have it apart this far. and replace the rear main seal seeing that
it is leaking a little. I will post a picture later of the part I pulled

I had something almost identical happen to my '74 camaro with a 454 in it
about 14 years ago... I remember it like it happened yesterday...
I was running down the road, going the speed limit ( I did once in awhile
ya know!) and all of a sudden the rpm's dropped to nothing
and I got a HUGE backfire... coasted into a parking lot and tried to
restart it... BOOM, another loud backfire... I got out and looked under
the
car and the left turbo muffler looked like a grenade had gone off in it...
I called a buddy up and he towed me home... I pulled the valve covers and
cranked the motor, no issues there I pulled the dist. out and the
dist gear was sharp enough to shave with, with one area ground enough to
slip on the cam gear.
New bronze (this time!) gear and it fired right up... I was lucky...cost
me a gear and a muffler.
Pull your distributor... if it looks good, I'd have to go with your
reasoning and say timing chain.

[Chevelle-list] Chevelle Died today

2006-03-11 Thread Al Hembd
I was out driving the Chevelle Today first time sense it was put away before
winter. You know getting the nice car the thumbs up. Getting the good
feeling you get when you drive a chevelle. Well the 454 let me down tonight.
I went to get on it a little got up to about 4000 then a backfire and the
car died. No spark. Maybe no power to the coil. If so its OK changing to
HEI. nope not it I popped the distributor cap off and no spinning of the
rotor tried to turn it by hand. not turning. distributor not broke.
Maybe the timing gears/chain??? Man I bummed!!! going for
surgery on the 23 to have part of my clavicle removed and exploring the
rotator cuff I hurt it at work on 12/30/05 been off work sense the 10 of
Jan. I am not saposto(Bad Spelling) use the arm as it is still in allot of
pain. Again I am bummed! Think it is the chain??

I took an old distributor pulled the gear off and every ting off of the top
and use that for my primer that way it takes care of the oil passage. I had the
same issue with just a shaft.

If you are useing just a shaft the oil won't flow under
pressure. The distributor housing has an oil passage which the oil flows
through to make the hole connection. Tom B. ---Grand Rapids,

Dennis how long have you been spinning it? When I
preoiled my crate motor, it seemed to take quite a bit longer thanI
expected to get the oil up. Do you have the oil pressure sending unit
hole (near distributor) closed off?

Yes you should see oil
coming out of the little hole at the pushrod seat on the rocker
arm. If you don't have the rockers in place and adjusted, the oil
isprobably leaking out where the pushrod sits in the lifter.
Also make sure you're spinning the oil pump in the right direction
-small big block Chevy distributors spin clockwise.

I'm spinning the oil pump in anticipation
of starting my new 350 and there is no sign of oil flow in the rocker

Hi Michael... a few places make a piece that screws into your spark plug
hole on the head, and you hook a compressor up to it, filling the

cylinder

with compressed air
keeping the valves up... by far the easiest way to do it... I think they
may even sell them at Harbor Freight... I'm sure Powerhouse has them

too...

I have also used this trick very successful it also works great if you
brake the bolt and have enough sticking out to put a nut big enough over the

I agree with Mike, if you have a welder this is a
great way to do it. Not only do you have a nice new bigger nut to grab, the

Rob,A trick I use for tough rounded
bolts is I set a larger nut on top of the bolt and weld it to it. The
larger the better as long as you have clearance. I would use a 1/2" nut
on the 3/8" exhaust bolts. Then carefully impact it out while it is
still hot from the weld.

I have a question for the list that is not specifically
Chevelle related, but is chevy related nonetheless. I'm removing
the exhaust manifolds from a 1995 Chevy 454 engine to install
headers. The passenger side manifold bolts came out with the
help of an impact wrench. On the driver side, I've got all but
three bolts loose. I stopped when one of the tough bolts started
to round out. Now I need to remove the bolt, but cannot get a
grip with a socket. I think Craftsman makes something that will
grip even a rounded bolt head, so I'll give that a try, but thought
I'd ask whether anyone has any advice on removing these last three
bolts. Any tips to remove the bolt that has started to
round? How about just removing the stubborn bolts? Should
I heat them first? Any tips that have worked for you in the past
will be appreiated. Thanks. Rob S.1966

I decided to go with the Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan set-up.
My ? is for you Clint if I remember you have one? Did you set it up for the
2 speeds or did you set it up for hi speed. my thoughts are to set it up to
come on at 155 or so at high speed and put a switch in /extra to turn on the
low speed at any time I want. or to set it up for the low speed to come on
when the car starts and on high at 155. what do you think or anybody else.
I am glad to admit that I am now an official member and not just on the
list.
Also on the wife thing that came up before I was talking to my wife about
the chevelleabration. She blew me away. Out of the blue She said She would
like to go but she would like more info.on it. I just hope I can get done my

They flow over 4600cfm. Another option is to ditch that flex fan,get a six

You probably have an old DN model. You can't use the
external regulator with an internal one. It's one or
the other. If your not concerned about being correct
as far as originality, I would suggest you move up to
a SI alternator. A 12SI 94 amp is simple to install.
They're are several sites to help you do this. These
are a couple of links for you to look at.
This is a good article...
http://hotrod.com/techarticles/pit/index15.html
also M.A.D. has alot of info.
http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/delcoremy.shtml
The fact that you have a serpentine belt means nothing
as far as which alt. you have. You can put that belt
on just about anything with the right pulleys. Hope
this helps you out. I did this swap to a 12 SI on my
'66.
You won't regret it. Especially if your in a slow
cruise. And if you add air, radio amp, elect. fans,
etc later on you'll be all set with enough amps to run
everything.

What do you mean by new style alternator? Is it
a
10SI or 12 SI? If it is, it has an internal
regulator.
If it's a DN old style you have an external
regulator. You will only have as many volts at the
alt. as you have in the battery with the car not
running. You can check the alt. With a volt meter
on
DC you can check at the battery or on the bus bar
of
your horn relay(10 ga. red wire) while the engine
is
running at about 2400 rpm. You should show about
14.5
volts. If not, take your alt. to a store that can
check it. This test is not always accurate. You
may
have a bad alt. and the thing will test good. The
charging wire going to the regulator will be a 20
ga.
red. It should be the 2nd wire from the pass.
side.
You may have a weak battery also that won't hold a
 charge.
--- Al Hembd [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

This is my question. When I turn on the key

should I replace the old regulator or should I
bypass it. If I do? how do I do it and still keep

What do you mean by new style alternator? Is it a
10SI or 12 SI? If it is, it has an internal regulator.
If it's a DN old style you have an external
regulator. You will only have as many volts at the
alt. as you have in the battery with the car not
running. You can check the alt. With a volt meter on
DC you can check at the battery or on the bus bar of
your horn relay(10 ga. red wire) while the engine is
running at about 2400 rpm. You should show about 14.5
volts. If not, take your alt. to a store that can
check it. This test is not always accurate. You may
have a bad alt. and the thing will test good. The
charging wire going to the regulator will be a 20 ga.
red. It should be the 2nd wire from the pass. side.
You may have a weak battery also that won't hold a
charge.

This is my question. When I turn on the key should I
have 12 volts to the alt, and from what lead coming
out of the old regulator should it be. If I don't
should I replace the old regulator or should I
bypass it. If I do? how do I do it and still keep
the idiot light working normal. I need to fix this
because I will be going on a car cruse on OCT. 10.
