Can any members out there recommend a quality shop? I'd want to drop the car off pick it up when it's finished. Any idea on the turn around time on this? What the labor costs might be? I got Chris Alston's catalog and he seems toimply they do it for under $2000. I'd supply the rear end. I just love the look of this type of car. Mostly for cruising. No 1/4 mile runs. Re: [Chevelle-list] Oil pump froze up
Well I pulled it apart and inspected the pump and found a piece of metal like some part of a retainer clip wedged against the bottom of the gears in the oil pump. also some small pieces in the gears. the oil pump shaft on the end where the dist goes on is cracked. I inspected the lifters all OK. The roller rockers OK the timing gears and chain look new I did find some surface rust on the bottom of the cylinders where the pistons don't ride like it was the motor was sitting for a long time. the bearings look good. I pulled 4 caps and 2 mains all looks good. I am going to put in new bearings seeing I have it apart this far. and replace the rear main seal seeing that it is leaking a little. BOOM, another loud backfire... I got out and looked under the car and the left turbo muffler looked like a grenade had gone off in it... I called a buddy up and he towed me home... I pulled the valve covers and cranked the motor, no issues there I pulled the dist. out and the dist gear was sharp enough to shave with, with one area ground enough to slip on the cam gear. Seems it's more luck of the draw whether the stud-mounted compressor I'm using will press the valve into the head or not, for either the removal or the installation step. Heads are on the engine, in the car; tips or tricks welcome. Thanks. Re: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust Manifold Bolt Removal
I have also used this trick very successful it also works great if you brake the bolt and have enough sticking out to put a nut big enough over the shaft and weld it on then remove it. - Original Message - From: Trooper To: The Chevelle Mailing List Sent: Wednesday, February 08, 2006 10:20 AM Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust Manifold Bolt Removal I agree with Mike, if you have a welder this is a great way to do it. Not only do you have a nice new bigger nut to grab, the heat from welding helps loosen the bold. The larger the better as long as you have clearance. I would use a 1/2" nut on the 3/8" exhaust bolts. Then carefully impact it out while it is still hot from the weld. Mike Holleman - Original Message - From: Rob Shaffer To: The Chevelle Mailing List Sent: Tuesday, February 07, 2006 1:15 PM Subject: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust Manifold Bolt Removal I have a question for the list that is not specifically Chevelle related, but is chevy related nonetheless. I'm removing the exhaust manifolds from a 1995 Chevy 454 engine to install headers. The passenger side manifold bolts came out with the help of an impact wrench. On the driver side, I've got all but three bolts loose. I stopped when one of the tough bolts started to round out. Now I need to remove the bolt, but cannot get a grip with a socket. I think Craftsman makes something that will grip even a rounded bolt head, so I'll give that a try, but thought I'd ask whether anyone has any advice on removing these last three bolts. Any tips to remove the bolt that has started to round? How about just removing the stubborn bolts? Should I heat them first? Any tips that have worked for you in the past will be appreiated. Thanks. Re: [Chevelle-list] electric fan or stock type flex fan? ? for Clint Hooper
I decided to go with the Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan set-up. My ? is for you Clint if I remember you have one? Did you set it up for the 2 speeds or did you set it up for hi speed. my thoughts are to set it up to come on at 155 or so at high speed and put a switch in /extra to turn on the low speed at any time I want. or to set it up for the low speed to come on when the car starts and on high at 155. what do you think or anybody else. I am glad to admit that I am now an official member and not just on the list. Also on the wife thing that came up before I was talking to my wife about the chevelleabration. She blew me away. Out of the blue She said She would like to go but she would like more info.on it. I just hope I can get done my work on it before spring. I got hurt at work, my shoulder they the docts said that I have a small tear in my rotator and I tore something in my ac joint. I go in on the 25 to see what they decide to do about it. sorry about the being long winded but I am excided now about the chevelleabration. You can't use the external regulator with an internal one. It's one or the other. If your not concerned about being correct as far as originality, I would suggest you move up to a SI alternator. A 12SI 94 amp is simple to install. They're are several sites to help you do this. These are a couple of links for you to look at. This is a good article... http://hotrod.com/techarticles/pit/index15.html also M.A.D. has alot of info. http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/delcoremy.shtml The fact that you have a serpentine belt means nothing as far as which alt. you have. You can put that belt on just about anything with the right pulleys. Hope this helps you out. I did this swap to a 12 SI on my '66. You won't regret it. Especially if your in a slow cruise. And if you add air, radio amp, elect. fans, etc later on you'll be all set with enough amps to run everything. --- Al Hembd [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am not sure if it is a 10si or a 12si it has a serpentine belt. You will only have as many volts at the alt. as you have in the battery with the car not running. You can check the alt. With a volt meter on DC you can check at the battery or on the bus bar of your horn relay(10 ga. red wire) while the engine is running at about 2400 rpm. You should show about 14.5 volts. If not, take your alt. to a store that can check it. This test is not always accurate. You may have a bad alt. and the thing will test good.
