Well if you live in the east or near Vancover then you can always use redi
strip - they will strip of all paint (including under coat) - I mean why
waist a lot of time doing something you have to fix later again (you
mentioning frame off)

Why not use a real Operating System such as Unix/Linux instead.

[Chevelle-List] DIY Paint Job - some small tips and a link

2001-11-29 Thread Beck

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Hello Folks

In the past days it has been a lot of mails about paint jobs, prices and how
to do it your self. While browsing the net I found this really nice article
about DIY paint job. Although the page is written by some VW lover he has
some very valid points and what he write is very good and adequate.

However after reading the page I would like to add some remarks about fillers
and how to apply them to the car.

1; If you are serious about fillers use lead fillers - the old fashion way of
doing it. Well not easy but very good.

2: He says fillers should only be put on bare metal - Well that's is kind of
true if you want the filler to really stick to the car (so to say). However
the vital "law" of the zinc chromatic primer is lost. You see to provide a
good rust protection the zinc chromatic primer should always be as close to
the metal as possible. Otherwise it will not serve it's purpose of being a
"giver" electrons instead of the steel giving it away to the oxidation
process. This happens due to the fact that zinc is less "nobel" than steel.
Okay so putting a filler between the steel and the zinc in the primer is not
good since you will insulate the zinc from the steel (unless you use lead
which it self is serving the same purpose as zinc).

The conclusion is that if you want rust under the filler apply it directly to
the metal (naturally rust under the filler will make it come lose after a
while - read years). Well it's just my two cent tip - yes I always use a zinc
primer underneath the filler.

Well here is the link to the article:

Hello,

Because I'm slightly dyslexic - the word Chevelle (without the e) is not
caught by my spell checker since I haven't added the word.

Hello,

Thanks for your support! I also want to say that I'm willing to go to any NOR
CAL (around the bay area) meeting to show my car and it's papers to prove
that it's legit.
