For all of you who wanted to see my shaved firewall and how I did it…

Here’s me in the prepping stages. Mainly just grinding away paint at the edges.
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t43/Bad66Chevelle454/Chevelle/ChevelleDisassembly008.jpg

This is right after I got the sheet metal cut and tacked into place. I believe
I used 16 gauge, cold rolled.
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t43/Bad66Chevelle454/Chevelle/ChevelleDisassembly012.jpg

This is after I had fully welded it. I welded the outside 100%. Since my dash
was out on the inside, I went ahead and tacked a few places just to make sure
this thing doesn’t vibrate at all. At this point I had put on bondo, sanded,
primered, sanded, and then I sanded even more.

This picture doesn’t really show off the firewall much.

maybe not aluminum but not exactly the same material as a solid cast but still touchy enuff where a racer won;t use it if stored laying down. A cast crank won't be hurt lying down if stored properly and oiled correctly. You're right, I would'nt want it if it was hurt because it was laying down. I stand corrected.

My builder told me that the only reason they are seen standing on end is for room puuposes. with all the torque and other pressure they withstand, then lying down certainly won't hurt it. He also stated that the racing cranks are aluminum and being on the side can sometimes nick them and with how fussy they have to be it is understood. Certainly not cast.

Decking the block and the heads to clean them up. The valves are from my 396 with single springs being that I just did the upper half recently and because I had bearings problems I'm rebuilding the lower half. Then I came into a 454 block and heads that went directly to the machine shop. I have no other info on the 454. Do the best you could with what you have to work with. Thanks a million.

Your message was great until I read "for now". It is a 3hp starter and I was told that
it would be more than enuff. I guess I'll have to wait and see. If not, then I'll go
with a shield. Is it when they get a little older they become more suseptible to heat
even on a gear driven starter or is it the solenoid? I guess I'll live and learn.
thanks again to all.

Hey Pep
I hear you on the stuff on e-bay. Update-I'm the one with the heat soak problem from a while ago and I just purchased a mini starter and put it on without a shield and it seems to be working just fine. Man, what a difference. So, thanks to all who helped with my dilema, it's much appreciated. You guys are the best !

Its not about being calm, in Conn.. it is around $2 bucks for unleaded and if it was $2 in TN. you would be right at the station just like us and not being calm won't change the price but you would be mad as hell just like we are but neither of us would have a choice. You are correct that this IS crazy. Be thankful it has'nt hit your area yet. By the way, can you ship the rest of us a few gallons? LOL

Diane,
Thanks for the info. and I do believe you because I really don't  know this being my first muscle car. It really does'nt matter who I get the answers for my problems from as long as they make sense and I admit that you seem to know a lot more about these things than I along with all the great fellas on this list .   Thanks again

Re: [Chevelle-list] headers and heat shields

2003-07-31 Thread BlazerMan00
Diane,
I heard that a heat shield is just another heat conductor and if you have the problem now, then it would just be a matter of time until the heat problem would rear its ugly head again that is, unless the shield is made of some special material.

Fellas,
I have the same problem on a 66 SS BB and I'm looking into a mini starter to rid myself of this problem because these work with teeth so I'm told versus a stock type with a solenoid. I really don't know much about it but I'm tired of taking my car out and not being able to turn it off for fear of being stuck for a while. Been there done that don't like it. Any help would be appreciated

Diane

I agree, paint it, especially if you have it out of the car. Find the correct finish,
try to clean the spots just in case it is something that will eat through the paint.
They come out very well and no one will know unless you tell them. Believe me, a lot
of cars at shows have thier grill repainted and no one is the wiser. Good luck with
whatever you decide to do.

Go with the larger ones, you'll be glad you did.  I'm running 3" on a 66 SS with a 396 bored .30 and love them. If you had a SB then the smaller ones would fit the combo better.

Thats messed up with all the money you put into having it done to your satifaction. Was there that much body work needed to the point where there was'nt enuff to do a better paint job? I hope it works out for you. Like you said, it probably looks good to just look at  and you are being too critical, but with the $$ you spent, I'm not sure that I would'nt be critical as well.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the voltage regulator . Make sure the alt. belt is tight and change the regulator, cheap things first . After I did that , the regulator told the Alt. to CHARGE. It was fine after that.
