Re: [Chevelle-list] Very OT - Chevy ABS pads

2007-10-09 Thread Clyde
Hello:i noticed in all the replies, that the most important thing to do
before replaceing the pads, was not mentioned.Crack open the front bleeders
and invert the brake calipre to allow the dirty old fluid to be drained from
the brake calipre. This should be done for a couple of reasons.(1) if the
vehicle has abs,the old contimanited fluid will be pushed back into the
hcu, causing the hcu to possibly become defective.(2).when the bleeder is
cracked open, the calipre is inverted, the old fluid will not have any chance
to be pushed into the hcu.You can use a large apir of channel lock pliers.a
c clamp,or install the new pads and use a calipre spreader to push the
piston back in.

  Clyde,

The original air cleaner is long gone. It now has a 9 inch round by 3 inch
tall K&N filter on it. The air filter has no ppes or lines going to it. I have
oe vacuum line going from the carb (the one facing forward) going to the
distributor, and that's it. I will look into the choke pulloff, etc.

  Thaks,

Hello:first off make shure the pipe from the exhaust manifold to the air
cleaner is intact, also check to see if the little flap opens up when the engine
is started cold.if not that must be fixed.H ow does the truck start when
cold?does it start and stall?.On your cold start check and verify the choke
pulloff is working as it should. There is a possibility that when you start to
drive the choke pulloff is starting to close up,causing a rich condition(black
smoke). The choke pulloff migh t be adjustible(set screw in the rear of the
diaphram or on the side),some of them you have to bend the rod.If the flap in
the air cleaner is not working, there is a possibility that the thermo vac
switch that controls it is tired. If it is you maybe able to find another one or
you can find another vac source to make it work.Give these a try and let me

Thanks for your reply Brad. Yes, a half ton.

The carb is an Auto Zone rebuilt that I recently installed. I replaced the
points, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, condenser and coil. Of course new doesn't
automatically equal good, but all items listed seems to be functional. Can an
old and possibly degraded distributor cause this type of symptom? The dwell is
running at 31 degrees and steady, which should be close enough. When I rev it
up with the timing light on, the mark climbs up and off the gauge so the
advance curve at least starts off correctly... The plugs are running gaps of
40.

As a youth, I was taught black smoke means to much fuel, which means not
enough air or too much fuel at those RPMs Is there an adjustment for the
fuel/air mixture off idle on these carbs?

Half ton, right? My dad had that very same truck from '72 to '85.
The shift linkage went bad in the column and he converted it to a
Hurst "Indy" floor shifter. I used to take it out on the back roads,

Yes, the timing tabs are marked in 2-degree increments.

I checked my Haynes book and it too defers to the underhood sticker. 4 BTDC
is as good a place as any to start, and if it runs fine then try adding a
little more advance until performance degrades. If you use it more as a
driver and less as a hauler the original factory specs may be allowing for
some engine loading that your truck doesn't see.

Sounds like a carb issue, especially if it's been years since the Monojet's
been gone through. If possible, put a vacuum gauge on the engine and
observe what it reads in the RPM range in question. Is the rest of the
ignition

pf1218 a\c delco is a better filter.the pf1218 has a anti=flow back valve in
it.this allows the oil to stayin the filter and is better for cold start

Same one I have been using (PF1218). The PF454 is the short filter
application. The PF25 and PF35 have been discontinued for sometime now.
There is a Fram filter that is longer than the 1218, but I cannot recall
the number since I don't use Fram filters.

Hello:apparently a 70 radio is different. But maybe you could let me know what
the plug on the rear of the radio looks like.A 69 radio has a plug on the back

has the word " LAMP" stamped into the metal case.If your radio has that 4
terminal plug and a empty spot marked LAMP,it would appear to be a 69

2006-12-04 Thread Clyde
Hello:you can take a long piece of threaded rod, what ever size will fit
through the upper hole where the shock would mount, this is usually at least
1/2"threaded rod can work.Usuing a plate that will stop against the lower
control arm,you can use the threaded rod to act as your spring
installer. This works really good and is very safe.Always inspect the
threaded rod for stress before using it again for safety sake.

If any doubt about your compressor, it wouldn't hurt to use a safety chain
as well.
When I was gathering info about doing mine, many guys suggested it.
I'd rather be lucky than good any day. Thank God I was lucky.

you should be very careful and compress the spring
shorter than the what it takes to thread the bottom
spindle bolt and nut on. Then you un wind the
compressor. Are the springs the same as the old ones?

I will agree, that the way it is applied is the key,we got a body shop to
paint our 69 chevelle, using the epoxy primer and paint they recommended.Possibly
the body shop had applied it incorrectly, who knows, but the corvettes we have
powder coated have had absoutely no problems.

I had my 69 frame sandblasted and epoxy primed about 2-3
years ago.  It is tough stuff.  I have slammed it, and
dropped tools on it, and even tried chipping it off to get to bare
metal.  (All long stories).  It is tough stuff.

I don't know about powder coat but I don't see how a stone
could chip this stuff.  Maybe depends on the brand or application??
Mine was done by a local shop.  Paid $400 for sandblasting and just
  primer on a bare frame.

With the rotisserie almost done, I'm within a week or two of taking my
body

off the frame.
I plan on sanding/ sandblasting it down as well as removing, sanding/
sandblasting all the suspension stuff as well.
My question is, what sort of primer should I use on these parts? Because
of
where I am doing this (outside, not in an enclosed area), I'd prefer to
use
a rattle can, but if that's not going to yield good results, I'll do what
I

have to do (and I have a compressor and an HVLP gun).

Anyone have any advice on this?

the old point type distributor for a HEI from who knows what but it has
been

so long since I have tackled this little chore that I have forgotten what
kind of plugs I used to use. I know if I get some that I can gap wider it
will be better. The ones in the motor are the 13/16 with the metal gasket
that seals them to the head. The guy at the parts store told me that the
ones with the 5/8 would work just fine but I would rather get a plug that
seals like it is supposed to, not with the beveled seat that the 5/8 plugs
have. What I am asking for is a number for say an AC plug that will work
with the HEI distributor. Thanks,

Hello:you can get a alternator built to any
specs, with the load that you had in the rain, actually a 63 amp it should have
been okay, take the alternator and get it tested for correct operation, also make
shure the belt was tight,if you can put a avr or a similiar tested on the car,to
see if the alternator was actually putting out as close as possible to 63 amps
would be a good test to see if the alternator is okay internally.

All of the gas stations in SE Pa. that I've tried recently have gone to
the 10% ethanol mix.

I've read reports that claim it to be corrosive to carburetors & fuel
system components in older cars and I've read other reports which deny
this.

Anyone have the real scoop? Anyone know of any gas stations that are
still selling 100% gasoline?

if you "get the fluid sucked out,be shure to change
the filter also.we have a trans-tech transmission flushing machine,it is hooked

the filter, add required amount and type of new fluid to the machine and flush
out the remaining old fluid.we have been performing this type of service for

filter, rather than just flushing and not replacing the filter.if you drop the

Hello:perform voltage drop tests on all starter
cables and negative cables, you can use a set of booster cables to check the
ground circuit of the car, connect the negative to the battery and the other end
to the block,if the car winds over okay, the ground is the problem, you can also
do the same with the positive to check the positive side(only if enough
clearance),also attempt to start the car with a boost or a good
strong battery charger hooked up to the chevelle. Is there any kind of a
junction block,on my 69 chevelle there is a plastic junction where the
10 gauge red wire from the battery positive connects to,you can bypass that
to see if that helps, other responses have mentioned to check starter and
battery, this should also be checked completely as the other members have
suggested, also 1 other thing, check the block whrere the starter mounts to make
shure it is clean and not rusty, body grounds etc.

The true name for the wire is called piano wire,it
is strong but thin,it will work very good,When removing the window try to do it
on a warm or sunny day.The heat\sun will keep the windshield warm and the

The tool john is refering to is priceless.  Its just a thin
piece of strong wire.   Push the wire thru the seal from
outside to inside.   Wrap each end of the wire around a short stick
or even OE wrench.   One person on inside & 1 outside,
with a sawing motion, pull the wire thru the seal all the way around the
glass.   You may have to go around twice to make it easier to
seperate when you lift the glass out.    Try to be careful and NOT
hang the wire up on the edge of the glass.  It will chip.

When its time to reinstall, use  butyl rubber ribbon sealer
NOT the sealer in a tube.    The ribbon sealer may be harder to
find, but it allows the window to flex independently of the
body.   The tube sealer gets hard and forces  the glass to flex
with the body.  Leading to cracks.

IF you need one, the windshields are available from
the aftermarket.    I've seen them at swap meets for as little
as $109.    If yours is chipped/crazed from 40 years of use,
the replacements are not bad.   Some say slightly thinner than OEM,
but the trim on my elky fit back on fine.
  Good luck

Hello:use pinch pliers to pinch off the 2 front and the rear brake flex
hoses,if the master pressure or firmness stays up,then the master is not the
problem,if it drops or is mushy, the master is the problem. This is a good way
to check to see what part of the brake system is at fault without guessing.
Be careful not to pinch the hose too tight,if you do you will collapse the
brake hose internally. There are special pliers\tools that are available from
