What is that yellow called? It looks a lot like either "speed yellow" from
Porsche or "fly yellow" from Ferrari. That's one very enterprising dash
modification. How much time do you have into this thing Herb?

Same problem occurred when I installed my new Holley 650 DP on my 327. I
have a Performer RPM intake and needed the 1" spacer to gain enough
clearance for the manifold vacuum connection near the distributor.
Anyway, There is no need to buy anything other than a new air cleaner
element. Buy the thin one that is standard for a second gen Camaro. The
elements are only about 1-1&1/2" in height & should give you the clearance
you need.
Good Luck.

Pay the nice mechanic for any work he has already done and move vehicle to
another shop.
BUT, explain WHY you are moving to another mechanic. If he isn't willing to
follow something this simple, then he has little or no regard for you as a
customer. He certainly has no respect for your wishes.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Change over on brakes

2001-07-06 Thread Dan Cobb

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Tim,
Generally speaking, the Camaro brakes are considered "tall spindles" (except
the early years) and they will work as long as you don't want to use your
factory upper control arms. The geometry will be WAY wrong, IF they even
fit. The "tall spindles" will require the use of an aftermarket tubular
control arm. This is very common in many of the disc brake conversion kits
that are advertised. Not a bad thing to do, unless you get a set that are
not good quality or the manufacturer is gone when you need support or
service. Many of these use different ball joints than your 68 as well or at
least that's what I've been told. I opted for a disc setup from a 72 Malibu
for my conversion (66 ragtop) in order to retain the original control arms.
I'm limited to rotor sizes, but it's not a track car. A big reason for going
with the later Camaro spindles is that they change the geometry enough to
give more flexibility with camber adjustments (I think it was camber, but
maybe not. I can't recall right now.), and of course 12" rotors.

There is no better way to decide than to look at their work and talk to
their customers. In your part of the country having a non-leaking top should
be very important to keep the rest of the car from rusting out! Be sure to
get a few BEFORE & AFTER shots that you can either post or email. I'd be
very interested to see the results of your efforts...er, I mean funds. ;)
BTW, will the $1200 be for a vinyl top or canvas, plastic rear window or

Cutting the coils should drop the car alright, but if they are old and
sagging, why not replace them with a set of shorter springs and/or dropped
spindles?
Dan (If you cut them, be sure to cut COMPLETE coils only. This will retain
the proper spacing between the two ends.)

Re: [Chevelle-List] Convertible top "tuning"

2001-07-05 Thread Dan Cobb

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

No help in finding a shop that will/can do it in your area (or any other for
that matter unfortunately). I just went through this same issue with my 66
ragtop. The front window would hit the top rail gasket if you tried to shut
the door with the glass rolled all the way up. This prevented the door from
closing properly and bulged the top of the window out when it did close.
Turned out to be a couple of alignment issues causing the problem. I asked
for some input, but there was very little, thus I will share the alignment
procedure that I decided upon.
1-Remove rear seat and well covers to expose the springs and adjustment
bolts.
2-Drop the top and make sure that your front and rear windows are aligned to
one another along the top edge as well as where they meet.
3-Put the top up and see where the "low spots" are (where the top hits the
windows excessively).
4-Withdraw the set screw along the top rails to adjust the level of the top
along the glass. If it's still too low, you need to raise the top frame
until it clears.
5-This is done on each side with a nut that holds two splined (grooved)
rails together. Loosen the nut and force the top up or down as needed. It
will be difficult, but it will not break anything.
6-Re-tighten the nut and fold the top up again to check your progress.
7-If this doesn't give you all the adjustment that you need, there are 3
bolts that hold the top frame to the car. If you loosen the bolts and lift
up on the frame it will move to give more play. Too far and you will have a
huge gap between the glass and top when you latch it closed.
8-Continue to play with these adjustments until it is close, then try the
set screw again to fine tune the rail along the glass.

This is how I did it, & my door closes like it was new again. No more
keeping the glass rolled down to close the door. I only adjusted one side at
a time. I was fearful of having both sides slip way out of alignment and
then having to go find a professional.
Good Luck.
Dan

[Chevelle-List] door alignment ?s

2001-07-01 Thread Dan Cobb

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

I need to align the Passenger door on my 66 ragtop. It's too low and I must
raise the entire door ~1/8". So I need to gain access to the 6 (3 upper, 3
lower) bolts that hold the hinges to the firewall. Do really I have to
remove the battery, tray, hood, fender, and inner fender to get to these
bolts? Will removing only the inner fender provide access to them? I was
just looking at it, but I can't tell for sure without trying first. This
would be great news, but I expect it is also a bit too optimistic.

I need to realign the passenger door on my 66. It's about 1/8-1/4" too low
over the entire length of the door and I can't get to the bolts that hold
the hinges onto the body w/o first removing the fender, so
Are there any tricks or hidden bolts that connect the fender to the
firewall, etc. that I should look out for? I should buy a Fisher Body
Manual, but I never figured it would get very much use.
If a basic procedure for this project is available, please let me know as it
will be very appreciated.

Say, I have an idea. If you don't like the topics that others post, try
posting something that does interest you. If that doesn't fulfill at least
one of your email list dreams, then take a hike. Don't cry, mumble, berate
others, put up a fuss, or even bother to tell us how upset you are with
threats of leaving. Just go!
Besides the bandwidth used by irrelevant non-Chevelle posts, I just want to
mention that of the last two times you did post, you replied to another
subject once, and didn't trim the footnote either time (see below!). If you
don't like it, go away!
There are far more important things for us to be worried/bothered about than
someone who is whining about not having set up their email software to
filter out unwanted dribble, or isn't smart enough to use the delete key. I,
for one, couldn't tell you how many emails come through for subjects I do
care about, not to mention the subjects I care nothing about at all.
If YOU counted 'em, YOU wasted your own time, & it's not our fault!

He's asking $12,000 OBO. Jeff tells me that it is in better condition than

I haven't seen it, so unfortunately I can't give any details like engine,
tranny, rear end, interior color, or options like AC or disc brakes.
If anyone is interested, please email my friend Jeff at the following
address:

mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Jeff will put you in touch with the owner to get more details.

Now THAT'S ridiculous! At least their "report" doesn't affect a persons'
insurance rates.

I don't think they're being made anymore Tom. Even the high-end power window
replacement units (that replace the manual assembly completely) require you
to transfer all of that stuff to the new setup.
I wonder if a properly shimmed bolt would work?

[Chevelle-List] Re: Fwd: Can you be FIRED - for being pro-life?

2001-06-19 Thread Dan Cobb

I'd like to try to be the first to suggest that
emails of this type are NOT sent, posted, forwarded, copied, or submitted in ANY
way, shape, or form to the Chevelle List. I am NOT condemning anyone for their
beliefs or their rights to have them on this, or any other matter, whether legal
OR moral. I do however feel that these types of emails have their proper place,
and this ain't it. ;)

I don't want this forum watered down by political
rhetoric or personal vendettas, etc.
If you feel that you must forward this type of
email, please do so to your own list of email contacts in the future and refrain
from including the Chevelle List in your distribution.
Respectfully,
Dan Cobb

I'd pick up a copy of Hemming's Motor News to see who might be able to make
the repair for you, or if they will sell the coating. How much do you have
to buy & how much does it take to coat a Chevelle tank?
I once found a website that restored old gas tanks. I used a www.google.com
search for gas tank repair or restoration.

[Chevelle-List] 67 SS(?) for sale in LA

2001-06-17 Thread Dan Cobb

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Just wanted to pass along a potential project car for those interested. It's
a hardtop 67 SS (real?) w/a 350 in it now. Has buckets and a fairly decent
interior. Body looks straight, but the area around the rear window and
behind the rear wheels shows significant rust. Nothing that can't be
repaired, but more than most would want to contend with at home.
Red with black interior.
Price was $3,900. In Los Angeles near LAX. I can get the phone # (if it's
still there on Monday) if anyone is interested in more details.
