Re: [Chevelle-list] I need an opinion

Read the October 2003 issue of Car Craft pgs.#38-39 They have some very
favorable things to say about Vortec heads. Do your home work about what
flex plate and torque converter to use with that one pc. seal crank. I had a
roler 305 with vortec heads in a 97 GMC and it just flew!
BTW- my local GM parts manager would never BS me about missaplication if
my crate motor blew up. Because they all look like the same application when
sitting on the parts room floor. Thay have sold me crate motors for other
missaplications and just really want my continued business. Just my 2
cents worth.

I need some help from you guys. I have a 67 Elky. I plan on putting a
new 350 engine into it soon. It will be used for a daily driver so I
don't need too much h.p. I was planning on a GM crate engine, but found
out since it didn't come with a 350, that it makes it a misapplication
and the warranty would only be for 12 months or 12k miles instead of the
advertised 3yr. 36k mile warranty. That's still a great warranty, but I
found a rebuilt VORTEC ROLLER motor from a very reputable dealer that
comes with a 3yr 36k warranty.
My question is this, are the Vortec heads a better way to go? I plan
on using an Edelbrock 650 cfm carb , HEI ignition and stock exhaust
manifolds. If I'm not planning high revving are the roller rockers
necessary or better? I'm not too familiar with this kind of set up and
look forward to advice from the experts.
Thanks,
Fred

Mikey,
In 68 they used two different wiper motors. The one that looks kind of
square or boxy seems to be the most common but mine has one that is long
round. I can take a pic tomorrow if it will help.
Don

Speaking of wiper motors... Anyone have any pics of the wiper motor on a
68 that they could email me off-list? My 68 has no wiper motor or
linkage/transmission and I have been searching for one in the junkyards. Can
they motors be taken from any other vehicles? I looked at a 71 and it looked
like a different bolt pattern, but didn't have a way to double check.

Firsti just signed up for this list. If this topic has been covered
already, then i apologize.

I just acquired a 71 chevelle with no motor or tranny. It now has a 12
bolt rear end under it, but i palm on building a wicked street machine
with about 500Hp.

If i swap the 12 bolt for a ford 9, is there a specific make and model
of car/truck which i'll need to get this 9 from?

The next question iswhich 9' is better, the 28 or 31 splines?

Any help on this rear end swap is greatly appreciated.

 Hello

I thought I would write to you about a recent experience buying parts
online that might help somebody else in the future.
I'm restoring a 64 Malibu SS Hardtop and Conv. here, so I'm out looking
for parts. As the result, I recently found an individual who stated he
had
the chrome pieces I needed. I wrote him and told him if he would provide a
list of the parts and conditions, as well as a total package price, I'd
more than likely buy them all. He sent me a list of parts with prices and
 some sketchy details on condition.
So, I immediately wrote him back, asking for photo's of the key items
in
the list. He sent me back a statement that he had just sold those items.
So
this makes me believe he never had these items at all, since I never
received
any photo's of any of the parts listed.
As a result, I wrote him back and told him I'd never do any business
with
him. It is no different than offering to sell a car to one person, and
while
they are reviewing the car, it gets sold to another person. I mean, I
responded to his emails very very shortly after receiving them here, and
never was offered a phone number to be able to call him.
So I guess what I am saying is, that if you buy parts online, get
photo's
before sending funds. I think this guy was just scamming me.

Re: [Chevelle-List] 71 chevelle HEI problem

The reason that I ran a relay on my 67 ElCamino is that the wires that power
the ign terminal on the fuze block are still quite small and the current has
to run through a great distance ignition switch circuit and interior harness
that has small wires too. By runnung a relay you can have a very short power
wire and use a big a wire as you can find. I ran my #8 wire from the
positive cable on the starter This helps create cleaner and higher coil
discharge voltage that can add to lower et's. Using a relay is not to ease
installation - it adds performance.

You didn't say what the load was for the relay, only the supply.
However,
 I
would expect that this relay might be providing voltage to the starter
solenoid. This is a common fix for the hot soak problem many Chevy
starters suffer from. If so, then I think your ignition switch is
definitely suspect for the run-on problem.

But first, verify for sure that this relay is in line with the starter
solenoid. If it's still in line with the coil, get rid of it, see if
the
problem persists, and if so look to the ignition switch as your likely
  problem.

On my 67 El Camino I have a 30A bocsh relay powered by the purple-run and
yellow-start original ignition wires. It works just fine!
If the yellow wire from the starter was connected to the wrong terminal on
the solenoid I think that that could cause a problem.
Check your solenoid. I have seen some GM starters that can bolt on but don't
have the right solenoid for older cars.(The yellow wire brings power to the
Ignition while the car is cranking.-If it was powered all the time than the
relay would never shut off)

Hey Jim, I did this to my 66 last year. I got a rebuilt one wire from Car

regulator and tossed it. Only problem I had
was my mounting brackets were some homemade mix and match that was there
when I got it.
If I can find it, I'll post the CarQuest part#.

We did some work on Jana's Elky yesterday...found out it may have been a
six from the factory due to the one core radiator we found (unless they
put
those in 305's). We removed everything but the computer. It seems to do
fine with the stock Quadrajet and distributor, so if it ain't broke...

The engine runs as smooth as silk now. We found a code on the motor which
the neighbor says means it's an '88 Goodwrench motor. We thought since the
fan shroud said 305 that it came with that motor, but it could have been
from another car (I can't imagine a factory 305 with a one core radiator).

Anyway it was a full days work to get all that EPA crap out of the
car...looks cleaner now and runs a lot smoother...should run cooler now as
 well.
