  Hi
  John,

  I
found a set of seal installers at (take your pick - Autozone, Pep Boys,
etc).  They're nothing more than a set of different size discs that
attach to a steel handle.  Pick the correct size disc, attach it to the
handle, then tap the seal in place.

  If
you haven't already installed your seals  -  When I got my Currie
9", the passenger side seal leaked.  Currie sent me a new axle bearing
and seal and suggested when I install the seal to put a light film of RTV on
the outer edge of the seal.  I did and it's been over a year with no
  leak.  HTH.

I
am putting together a new Moser 9" rear end for my 69SS. I know I need
some kind of seal installer for the seals that go in the rear axle. I
already screwed up one set of seals trying the large socket and hammer. I

Does anybody have any hints or recomendations on the best way to go

RE: [Chevelle-list] E-brake cable retainer clip needed

2005-09-23 Thread John Usher
Sorry, John I do not have the clip you need, but I do have a brand new
intermediate cable (from Year 1) that I do not need and would like to
sell $16 plus actual shipping cost. It is designed for 68-72 models with
TH-400 according to Year 1 website (part number 5190N).

The Year 1 catalog said I needed two and I had two on my car, but the
new cable is designed such that it loops through the equalizer to feed
both back e-brakes.

Another small part that I need is one of the retainers that hold the
intermediate e-brake cable to the rear cables. There is a picture of one
here:

If anybody can spare one from a parts car, please let me know. This
would be in front of where the rear lower control arm attaches to the
frame. I ordered a new intermediate cable but can't hook it up without
this little clip.

Thank you,

If you just don't want what happened to happen again buying a C-clip
eliminator kit would be the answer and the cheapest route. Currie, Moser, etc
make direct replacement rearends both as ford inch style and GM 12 bolt style.
With the 9 inch you do have to modify your driveline . If you are leaving the
350 in there I wouldn't bother going to the 9 inch. What caused the failure ?
Did the axle break or the c-clip ?

RE: [Chevelle-list] suggestions on a 12 bolt

2005-08-16 Thread John Usher
Herb,

I was going through your website pertaining to your Elky. I am
interested in the Currie Enterprises 9" rear (like you have) for my 69SS
and had a few questions:

1) Did the stock Chevelle lines work? Did you have to weld on a clip at
the top of the unit or was that there already?

2) Do you have pictures showing detail of the lines at the back of the
wheel (I saw the one kind of showing the center section)?

3) Was there any trouble getting the parking brake to work? Did the
brakes interface with the default intermediate cable of the Chevelle
parking brake system?

4) Was it a true bolt-in?

Sorry for the on-slaught of questions, but this is a big expense and I
want to be know what work lies ahead.
Thanks a lot for the help.

I guess I'll throw in my experience about aftermarket rears... About
two years ago I ordered a complete Currie 9" and like Ron mentioned
below, I too got carried away while ordering. The entire rear including
shipping ended up costing $3600. Even though it cost a lot, I can't
complain because it has been one of the few bolt it in and forget items
I've bought. It quietly does its thing with no fuss. I wish I could
say that for every part on my El but we all know how that goes!

Mike has it right. I'm planning to install my Moser this weekend.
Nothing cheap about it - plus I got carried away as I was ordering...

Don't forget about the shipping either. Moser sends them with the
shipping COD. Had to warn the wife about that $225 bill before it was a
surprise :-)

I guess maybe the best question to start in these situations is to ask,
How much money can you afford? I did the Mosser 12 bolt thing. Got the
differential and spline count I wanted with late model Chevrolet
flanges. I think the old style brake kits, if this is a consideration at
the moment, are cheaper than a junkyard or new 93-up rear disc setup.
But really, it's all about your fundage, as it were.

[Chevelle-list] Brake Booster Angle

2005-07-14 Thread John Usher
I have two questions that have always puzzled me

1) Why are brake boosters (and therefore master cylinders) sometimes
mounted at an angle? Why are the brackets not such that they are
essentially level?

2) Why do they tell you to bench bleed a master cylinder on a bench vise
and not with it attached to the brake booster so you can use the brake
pedal to activate the plunger? Doing it on a bench vise is a real pain
in terms of activating the plunger.

Thanks.

I bought an SS dash to replace mine that has cracked just above the
steering column. Well, what a piece of junk. The chrome was just
spray painted with silver paint and there is overspray, etc. The
lettering for the lighter and wipers is not raised very high and it's
not silver either.

Are all the repro SS dashes like this or are there better ones out
there.

Are there services that could repair my current dash so I can keep it
original?

Thanks,

[Chevelle-list] Align body with frame

2003-12-15 Thread John Usher
I am placing the body back on the frame and wondered how accurate I need
to be. Currently, using the holes at the front (below the cowl), the
body is shifted back about 1/4" from being perfectly over the holes. I
can insert all the hardware to attach the frame, but was wondering is
this 1/4" will be a problem when I go to install all the body panels for
the front-end (fenders, hood, etc.)

Will I have a problem attaching the front end if I don't fix this
offset?

Thanks.

Looking at the fact that you can now buy upper and lower

[Chevelle-list] Currie upper control arms don't fit

2003-11-07 Thread John Usher
Title: Message

I
recently bought the currectrac upper control arms for my 69 Chevelle SS with a
12 bolt rear with 3.73 gears. When I tried to install them I ran into a problem
in that the casing on the differential that is on the driver's side is closer to
the bushing mount than on the passenger side. This means that the currectrac
control arm doesn't fit this bushing mount since its tab interferes with the
differential case so the holes don't line up.I hope I have explained
this appropriately. The differential case is not symmetrical so the
clearance available on one bushing is the not the same as the other. Is this
true of all 12 bolt housings? These were suppose to fit.

Any ideas what is going
on?
