Thanks.  No I just
used regular plastic with some masking tape that won’t take off the paint when I
peel it off.  Though I found that the masking tape I left it on there since
I had it blasted in October doesn’t seem to want to come off… so I guess its not

Great discussion, so here's another 2.5 cents
worth.

I ordered and sent back PUI assembled door panels
from NPD, on further research I came to the conclusion that all the "BIG GUYS"
carried very inferior, PUI interior products. As I couldn't wait any longer
and the originals were too trashed to use I decided to order on EBay from
Greenwood Chevy, the price was as good as any at $145.99.

Here's where TWE comes in, what I received from
Greenwood was a set of 1968 Chevelle/El Camino completely assembled door
panels from TWE and compared to the PUI's, well there was no comparison, there
were as close to the originals as you could get.very nice. The only knock
was the stainless steel center trim was about 1.5 inches too short, the
depression it sat in was the right size but the molding was too short.
Fortunately my originals were OK, a little time polishing and some contact
cement and voila a wicked set of panels. Since then I have ordered a 68 Big
Block fan shroud, if you know, that's a one off year, the TWE shroud was very
nice, I've seen the other guys and there's no comparison. Looking forward to
seeing more from them...whoever they are. NOS is best if you don't mind the
price, we need more people complaining or just not ordering the crap that's out
there.

2004-12-21 Thread Mike Sanders K0AZ

70 Chevelle
If you have no marks to guide you and no
information at hand you can try a couple of inconclusive checks.
First if your car has a front bumper are the
parking lights/turn signals lenses white or amber?
If you have a valve cover off the engine is
it about 5 inches across or about 7 or 8 inches across?
Does the dashboard have a long horizontal
speedometer or does it have a round speedometer and gauges?

White parking/turn signal lenses would
indicate SS
Valve covers of 5 inches across or so would
indicate non SS and the bigger ones would indicate SS 396/402 or
454
Dashboard with long horizontal speedometer
is a non SS and round speedometer and guages could be an SS.

Now whether it is a clone or actual SS will
require some serious learning but is doable. Try to find which way it leans
first.
SS or non SS. Then dig further into details
to see what it actually is/was.

Good Luck

RE: [Chevelle-list] Wiring Solder Connections

2004-12-20 Thread Mike Sanders K0AZ
I'd like to agree with everyone on the shrink. I keep many sizes of the
stuff around
and in my work truck. We use shrink on cable connectors on cell sites. Even
use it on
ground wires at the crimp lugs that bolt to the buss points. Outside
connections are
treated beyond that. First black tape that is made for it goes over the
connectors
that are previously heat shrunk. Then a Butyl material we call monkey goop
etc. is
wrapped around the joint over the tape. Then a final layer of tape.

The important thing to remember is if a joint of any kind is outside
including under
hood is should be protected. Where possible drip loops should be used and
any joints
should be up from the bottom of the loop. This is not always possible in
auto wiring
but when replacing exposed wiring it is a good idea to incorporate a drip
loop if you can.

The time element of a joint deteriorating is oxidation. This is caused by
condensation
or just plain water exposure. I know you guys have seen me out there in
winter beating
the battery posts on my truck or car with a hammer. Quick and dirty
oxidation barrier
breaker. As long as it is wet it is a joint. When it dries out in the cold
dry winter air
it turns to dry oxidation which is an insulator at worst or a semi conductor
at best.
Bad joint either way and will not carry the current it needs to.

When using shrink try to avoid that Bic or Zippo and get a heat gun or hair
dryer if
available. Open flame can more quickly weaken the shrink. Yeah you can
roast weenies
with that heat gun behind the seat in my truck so you must be careful with
those too.
That shrink is rather fragile until properly applied to the wire or cable
that it is covering.
Take your time and keep the heat source moving.

I like to solder all connections/connectors if possible. Shrink tube is
only way to go instead of tape. A little trick is to put a dab of clear
silicone on the connection before sliding shrink tube over it and then
applying heat. This makes a very nice waterproof soldered connection.
I know you can buy the shrink tube with glue however this is cheaper and
works just as well if not better.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Splice or Solder

2004-12-18 Thread Mike Sanders K0AZ
The biggest problem with soldering is the person holding the iron/gun
whatever
USUALLY. Most folks just have no experience in soldering. Your comment about
a solder joint needing to have mechanical integrity is absolutely correct.
It is the
first step to a good joint. The next step is to get proper heating of
both/all elements
to be soldered and then apply the solder to the joint. It is not correct to
apply the
soldering tool to the solder to get it to melt. It is correct to apply the
solder to the
hot joint and have it melt evenly over the joint.
Also electrical soldering has no resemblance to body soldering or Acid Core
type soldering.
Once a joint is properly executed it should still be covered in a means to
protect it
from the elements that can and will cause oxidation.

Crimp joints are just like solder joints. Using the right tools and
techniques is the key to
having good crimp joints. And as with a solder joint it also requires
attention after the
fact to protect it from the elements.

You can go either way as long as the joint is properly done be it solder or
crimp. I use
both ways but generally lean towards soldering. However in a vehicle I
usually lean towards
crimp and other compression joints. It's just easier than soldering a
connection under a dash
and having molten solder drip on your nose.

Yeah, I know I am gonna get hammered on this one because everyone has an
opinion that
has to be one way or the other.

Hey! Merry Christmaswhile I'm at it.

I've always thought that a solder joint was better electrically
than a crimp connection. But I found 2 internet references that say
a solder joint has higher resistance than a crimp. I know that a
solder joint should first be mechanically sound, so why would a crimp
be better?

refurb, trade,
sell and buy at will. Enjoyed a long time of playing with a lot of the old
stuff for peanuts.
Then the "investor/collectors" get involved and the market goes nuts.
Absolute junk goes
for insane amounts of money and the guys who started the trend are way

the game. The craze for any consumer item is the same. Muscle cars are no

When the trend goes to high prices there is no stopping it. Good for some I

for most who actually enjoy the product whatever it is.
I bought my 70 Chevelle Malibu to drive, work on, enjoy and preserve as best
I can. My
40 plus year old dog tags are still around my neck and my need to hear tires
bark once in
a while hasn't left me either. When I was a kid I knew I never wanted to
grow up and now
pushing 60 I know I was right back then. Going to fight it all the way.
If I had a Million and 50K I sure would not spend it on a one of a kind
Camaro as in this

Went to look at a 70 Malibu today. I have been eying it for a couple of
years and noticed it now had a for sale sign on it. This old girl is rough.
The vinyl top has been removed and the guy "shaker can" painted the top. All
the trim is missing. Rust in all the typical places for an Illinois car.
Paint is destroyed. 307, 10 bolt peg leg. Red with a green interior. The
good points were: bucket interior w/ console. SS dash, grill and wheels. I
thought it would be a good parts car or a nice project for me to do my own
body work and drive for a while. I'm thinking $1000-$2000 tops. Talked to
the guy yesterday and he was firm at $8500. I almost started laughing. I
realized right there that there was no reason to haggle on price. I just
gave him my card and told him when he gets closer to the $1500 range give me
a call. He looked at me like I was nuts and said " do you realize this is a
classic muscle car" I just smiled and said "Yes, I have two almost as nice
as this one at home" :)
