  Good
point about never working under the car alone. Although if the car does fall
on you, having somebody else there to watch is not necessarily going to save
  your life.

  Also,
the cheapo jack stands have a triangular base and are made of bent sheet
metal. Those things are an accident waiting to happen. Good jack stands have a
rectangular base and are made of cast
iron.

  I had
my El Camino on 4 (good quality) jack stands for two years and there was no
problem to have it sitting there. I didn’t work under it though w/o putting a
good hydraulic floor jack near where I was working as a failsafe. There's no
such thing as being too careful in this
  situation.

i really think the jackstand we had as kids 30 + years ago were POS. the
new style are far superior to the old ones. personally if I'm under the car i
jack up the car high enough to put blocks  (4 x 12 about 12 inches long)
under the tires. i put as many as i need (4 x being 3 1/2 inches) and then i
let the car down on jack stands just to the point where there is a load on the
stands and the tires wont turn. Do not jack car up too high. I then feel
pretty safe. 1) NEVER WORK UNDER A CAR ALONE!

I
think that trick only works with MS Outlook and those viruses that go in and

  Just to show how sneaky
viruses are getting, I just got one with a subject line of CANCER TERMS…from

Not really. I work for a scrap recycler (Metal Management Inc.) doing
network administration. We do a lot of business with the Big 3, (we have a
site right next to GM's foundry in Defiance, OH) but I wouldn't call it the
car business. BTW-- does anyone know what GM makes at that facility? ie--
are they casting Vortec heads or anything useful like that?

Umm.. the lack of anti-lock brakes and airbags (and the required
electronics
and added complexity) are part of the appeal of my Chevelle. Why would
I
want to retro-fit that??

Having worked for TRW (a major manufacturer of airbags for the OEM), I
can
say that these are highly-engineered systems designed and made for
specific
vehicles. You are going to face an uphill battle ALL the way in trying
to
retrofit. Even if you could find all the parts and mock them up in a
way
that it LOOKS like it would work, how would you test it? When an airbag
goes off, make no mistake -- it's an explosion happening right in front
of
your face. This is not a do-it-yourself project, IMO.

I don't want to be a nay-sayer and say that it CAN'T be done, but just
because something can be done, doesn't mean it should. A fraction of
the
money could be spent on a 5 point harness (or two, to include the
passenger
seat).

Anti-lock brakes might be easier to accomplish. I remember seeing an ad
in
the back of Hot Rod or Craft for years in the 90s that touted Anti-lock
brake upgrades for older cars. I can't remember the name of the
company,
though. If you can find some of those issues, flip through the ads
towards
the back. They used to advertise a lot -- I believe the ad had a big
outline or silhouette of a master cylinder.

I've been on the list pretty much since the beginning, back in '96 and I
think you're the first person to ask about air bags and anti-lock
brakes, so
I don't think too many people are doing this stuff. If you do proceed,
make
sure to send some posts describing how you did it. I'm sure back in the
mid-80s, people might thought you'd be crazy to swap an EFI engine into
a
Chevelle, too. :-)

Has anyone found a web site when I can research how to get anti-lock
brakes and air bags to work in a Chevelle that don't have the full blown
computer? I might be able to figure out a way to do it if I can get my
hands on some info to start with.

Anyone else done this already and got them to work?

Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] Why OPG Sucks

There's the whole problem. People don't want to pay $8 UPS to send a package
of clips. Instead they want the seller to drive (or walk in my case) to the
post office, stand in line for a half hour, and then charge you less. In my
case, I lose about one and a half hours every time I have to go to the post
office. I realize that nobody wants to pay for that time. If I send an
employee, I lose that much time and I'm paying for it. If I go myself, it
only costs me the time, but time is also money. Then if you don't have the
time, and things go out a bit late because you haven't had time to get to
the post office, customers get mad because the turnaround time is not fast
enough for their taste. Yet they don't want to pay for the faster, easier
method.

I do it because I know what the customers want, and the fact is that it just
makes it that much harder for me to run my business, and to compete against
the bigger players who will not stand in line for you at the post office to
save you money at their own expense. I can easily see why companies will
send a small pack of clips that could have been mailed for $2 via UPS for
$8.

Also, what makes you think that distributors get packing materials any
cheaper than anybody else? Most people who sell on ebay use some old shoebox
whereas somebody who is shipping all the time has to buy boxes. You might be
surprised how much boxes cost. Also, most ebay sellers pack their own boxes
whereas distributors have to pay somebody to pack boxes. I try to save money
by re-using boxes and cutting big boxes down into smaller ones, but once
again the latter is time that nobody wants to pay for.

I totally feel for you guys and I've said many times before that this is one
of the reasons I went into the business. I was a customer in this business
for many years before I became a vendor, so I know what the customers want,
and try my best to make it that way and still compete against the people who
don't care how much you pay for shipping, as long as it saves them time and
money.

for a distributor, usually the courier comes to them, and packaging costs
should be minimal. I bought windshield molding clips for my (ex)65 Malibu,
which they could have mailed in an envelope, but UPS'd them to the tune of
$8. But as long as we pay it and keep coming back for more, they have no
reason to change their ways.

As I walked in the front door after work today, there was a box from Year
One sitting there.  Naturally the first thing my wife says is "Now what
did you order?"  "Nothing honey, I swear, what is it?" I reply.

Apparently, while at the Bristol Bash I won second place in the Muscle on
the Mountain drag race!  That's a shock considering I was never able to
  make a full power run.

Either way, Year One sent me a gift certificate for $100 and a cool glass

  shipping!
