Re: [Chevelle-list] chrome water pump

2004-03-22 Thread Pjboxwood2

As far as Chrome water pumps go they are not junk unless you get a rebuilt one that is done with an inferior seal. Many chrome parts on a motor can and will leak after a period of time or even upon installation if not install properly for example over torquing the bolts and crushing the gasket. Chrome water pumps are a little different as they start life as a standard cast water pump as would have originally come from the factory. Many other chrome parts such a s timing covers and valve covers use very cheap and thin metal as the base for there chrome product which makes them prone to oil problems.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Which oil Filter do I use

2004-03-22 Thread Pjboxwood2

As far as oil filters go for small block and big block Chevy's, the Fram PH 30 (1/2 QT) is the shortest, The PH 13 (1 Qt) is the standard long one and the PH373 is longest.(2 Qt version).
    hope this clears it up

Dan,
As I recall you can buy" Earls" Braided line in 5 foot sections with ends already in place. I think 5 feet should do for you.

Pete,
Check out a Russell Pro Fuel Filter which I believe has 1/2 inch NPT threads. Use an adaper from 1/2 NPT to your choice of 5/16" or 3/8" inverted flare. My guess would be you are using 3/8.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Engine Rebuild '65

2004-03-03 Thread Pjboxwood2

Charles,
Don't be fooled by the price of $1,300. You need to take into acout the price of everythingelse you will need to complete the engine. You have machine work (dipping the block, bore and hone, Install new cam bearings and oil plugs or restrictors, etc) , new pistons, new rods, new crank if stroking it or turn the one you have, bearings, rings, gasket set and more. It might not be a bad idea to check out a crate motor like a ZZ Chev .

Re: [Chevelle-list] Compression Opinion

2004-03-02 Thread Pjboxwood2

Charles,
Normal compression on a small block you can find at around 125 and higher As a rule of thumb you are allowed a 10% variance from cylinder to cylinder. For example if 5 were 100 then the other 3 can be between 90 and 110. Sounds to me like you diffidently need to pull it and rebuild it. The motor does have issues weather it be some bad valves or worn rings.

Re: [Chevelle-list] another tach question

2004-03-02 Thread Pjboxwood2

Jim,
AS for your aftermarket Tach. It sounds like alis hooked up correct. on factory tachs their is a tan as Tom mentioned but on the aftermarket tach it is different. You have your red which will go to the fuse box, you green to the negative if the coil, your blue/yellow to your dimmer switch for the light , and since you are having problems with it jumping I would try running the black directly to the (-) negative of the battery and see if that fixes your problem.
