I still see bass boats metal flake, but no cars. I see all the new pearlescent and other unique paints, but no metal flake! What kind of problems do you have with maintenance? Cost? Application? Metal flake takes A LOT more work to hand sand after it has been applied. I did a 68 Camaro while in high school with a black base and blue/green metal flake on top. It looked green/black during the day and blue/black at night. Kind of weird. --Todd
[Chevelle-list] Impala SS help
I've got a question not related to Chevelles but to Impalas. There is an estate sale where I live and one of the items up for bid from the deceased is a very well restored 64 Impala SS. How do I tell if it is a clone or real SS Impala? Also, what ball park figure do you think that it is worth. I plan to bid on it. What are the more rare options to look for? I see this car on e-bay for 7 to 10 thousand. Any hunch, guess, or good estimate will do. Thanks! --Todd G.
[Chevelle-list] High Octane Aviation Gas.
I can drive my Chevelle to our municipal airport and get gas at the Chevron beside the runway. It is a low lead gas that floats between 105 and 112 octaneand it is $2.70 a gallon. I guess that is not bad since 87 octane at the gas stations cost $1.97 around here (Central Arizona). I am a pilot. I know that the aviation industry was grandfathered in for the lead containing gasoline when America went unleaded. As far as I know, av-gas is the only readily available mass produced fuel still containing lead. I buy av-gas all of the time for the planes I fly. I do believe that dispensing the av-gas directly into an owner's car is illegal. I'm not saying that this doesn't go on all of the time. Does anyone know if this is in fact true? Is it illegal to dispense leaded gas from an airport vendor into a car? The reason I ask is that few airports will sell the gas and dispense it into a car but most will sell if it is going into a container. Also, on a similar topic. Most people now days don't realize that pure gasoline, like av-gas, has a beautiful pure almost sweet smell. And if you get it on your hands it almost immediately evaporates leaving no residual smell or oily feeling. The chemical brew that they call automotive gas they sell for cars has become so darn nasty. They shouldn't call it gas anymore. Just call it car fuel. --Todd. Boise, Idaho.

Are you talking about a true ding strip that is made of rubber and stands out? I know that in '69 there was a striping option that looks like a ding strip.--Shawn Price Yes, it is a chrome and rubber, and stands out. I'm not speaking of a stripe. The car is 100% original from the dealer. I know this because my great aunt bought the car new in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1969. From what I'm reading from the list, this must have been added by the dealer in Scottsdale. The rubber has faded and cracked a bit sosince it is not a vital piece, I'll just remove it and be done. Too bad that I'venowgot holes running down the side of my car --Todd
[Chevelle-list] door ding strip?
My 69 Chevelle Malibu has a factory"door ding" strip running down the length of the car. I'm not sure what the actual name of that piece is called. I notice that pratically no other 69 Chevelle Malibu has this. Is this a rare item or is it that people just take this piece off? --Todd Gatesh. Eagle, Idaho.

Nick Sandoval of Custom Performance Paint in Chandler, Arizona. I have known Nick Sandoval for 20 years. He started painting all of our high school hot rods in the auto shop paint booth at Marco de NizaHighback in the early 80's. He is very, very good. I'm not sure if he still owns the above shop however, you should be able to track him down. He is very well known in the Phoenix area and has been written about in car magazines. [Chevelle-list] mirror and shocks
Hi guys, I've got a couple of quick questions. I've got a 69 Chevelle Malibu and the rear view mirror glass has deteriorated. You know, the shiny mirrorbacking on the glass has "decayed". Can I replace just the glass mirror partwithout having to buy a whole new rear view unit? Second question is about shocks. My Chevelle is a stock 307 and it needs new shocks. Does anyone have a favorite brand and model of replacement shocks? The price isn't so much of an issue and I'd like to upgrade a bit from "factory" shocks. I don't want a super stiff harsh ride. This car is a cruiser not a racer. Thanks a bunch! Todd Gatesh. Eagle, Idaho.
[Chevelle-list] Chevelle race requirements.
I decided to run my stock 69 Chevelle at our local raceway just to see what times it would get in the 1/4 mile. I was told that the car had to meet a couple of requirements in orderto race. It needs a radiator overflow bottle and the battery must be held in with a solid clamp. Did the 69 Chevelle not come with a radiator overflow bottle? Mine does not have one. Also, can one purchase a battery hold down bracket that will fit the battery tray of a 69 Chevelle? My Chevelle's battery is just sitting in the tray. I was told that a bungie cord will not substitute for a solid hold down clamp. --Todd Eagle, Idaho.
[Chevelle-list] 10 bolt strength?
What is generally considered the maximum horsepower and gear limits for a ten bolt rear end? I've got a 69 chevelle with a 10 boltopen gearand I'd like to have a posi installed and some lower gears but I don't want to spend the money on the ten bolt rearif it can't handle (small block)375 horsepower and ~3.70 gears. Thanks guys! Todd in Idaho.
