Re: [Chevelle-list] Transmission Help?????

2003-07-21 Thread peter vant riet
Hi Dave,

I'm not a mechanic but i think i've had a similar problem once with a TH350 under a
'77 Caprice.
When i removed the oil pan for filter change and check, i found a small s-shaped hook
in the pan.
This turned out to be the link between the shifting pawl and a piston that directs the
oil to the desired gear.
In other words the exact link between the mechanical and hydraulic stuff.
It's easily accessable, somewhere behind the filter if i remember well.
But you have to remove the pan and oil again -sorry.

So, once you're positive about the levels (remember to check the oil with a warm, but
not really hot, trans running) you might try this.
While under the car, also check the mechanism that locks the shifter (the click you
feel). If this device is bent, it might misalign the piston pointing nowhere in
between two gears?

I have no experience with overfilling since the manual repeadingly tells you not to..
this should mean something.
Good luck!
Peter.

[Chevelle-List] leaky windows

2003-07-16 Thread peter vant riet
I'm having trouble with leaking (fixed) windows.
I wonder what's the best thing to do, without pulling 'em out.
The obvious way would be to stuff the gap with acrylatic kit and push the strips back
on.
Then pray it does the job cause afterwards the strips will never come off again.
Another idea might be to spray a layer of ML coating (the clear stuff used in the
doors and panels) in the gap.
This will leave room for ventilation when the strips come on again. Someone told me
this was better...

Does anyone have experience with this (good or bad)?

regards, Peter.

RE: [Chevelle-List] backfire thru intake-Oops, solved

2003-07-12 Thread peter vant riet
Hi again

There's no way getting around it...
I was wrong about the origin of the backfires.

When i examined the valve movement when turning by hand (thanks for the advise Larry),
i noticed a piece of gasket missing at the .. exhaust!!!
The only (poor) excuse i have is that the airco obsured the view around that area and
might as well dampened the sound, anyway, i was convinced it came from the carb.

So my saturday was spend, after the stupid discovery, messing with the header.
Anyone interested? (i live in Holland though) I've had it with heades for good now.
They're always blocking the view and workingspace, must use shorter spark plugs (more
expensive), the weight seems to damage the gaskets and i doubt the benefit on power.
Seems like a lot of trouble just for a nice sound.

I learned some more and the engine runs really smooth now, even better than ever so
the work done on the ignition sure wasn't in vain.
Having said that, i want to thank you guys for your promt replies.
Appreciate!

Peter.

[Chevelle-List] backfire thru intake

2003-07-11 Thread peter vant riet
Hi,

Could anyone help me with the following problem;
My engine (350, mechanical ignition) is backfiring through the intake on idle and
driving.

The distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires have all been replaced and none
seemed to make a difference.
Vacuum advance works, static advance looks fine too as checked with strobe light.

Yesterday i replaced the contact breaker assembly (includes capacitor) wich was really
worn.
I even used a dwell angle meter from a friend and fine-tuned it at 30 degrees neatly.
However, no change to the problem at all.

Next i removed the spark plug wires one by one to check if sparks were really there.
Then, when i had the wire of the 1st cilinder disconnected, the backfiring had stopped.

So, getting worried about the internals of the engine, i checked the compression.
Fortunately with pleasing result: all between 10 and 11.
Then i removed the valve cover (that's as far as i will go inside the block) to check
for valve movement. I was happy to see them all in motion (the rockers at least), but
left me puzzled...

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Since i have a timing (strobe) light available, i assume there has to be some form of
synchronisation to check for.
In other words, if i connect the trigger to this suspected cilinder's wire, do the
valves of the same cilinder have to freeze by the strobelight?
Probably not , because of the 6 degree advance? If any, wich parts should?

best regards, Peter.
