Well, if anyone knows of a Chevelle enthusiast up here in Alaska, let

  I
hate to do it.  I hardly even got the new engine broke in, but I need to
get my wife a new car.  She started working, and with winter quickly
approaching, I want to get her a good car.  Nothing major wrong with the
Chevelle.  Couple very minor rust spots, but that's about it.

  I'm
asking $12K, which for Alaska, is CHEAP!  I'll be publically listing it
  for $15K

You should put the cross pin back as soon as you get the c-clips out to
prevent the spider gears from coming apart in the first place.

  Hi all.
  New to the list.
My son has a 70 Chevelle and we want to convert it from a TH350 to a good
5 or 6 speed manual with overdrive so we can go to some decent gears like
373's in the rear.  Any suggestions.  Are their any kits out there
available that include all the parts like bellhousing, pedals, clutch,
  pressure plate, trans, etc.
Also, I was thinking a hydraulic clutch might be kinda slick to install
as we could use a nice strong pressure plate without bending clutch linkage or
requiring a linebacker's left leg to engage the clutch.  Is there
  anything available out there.
  Thanks.

My choice to thwart someone from hot-wiring a car, or having a set of
master

keys, and driving off is an electric fuel pump with a separate switch.
Can't get more than a block or two before running out of gas and they'll
generally abandon the car. I know one guy that had a pretty expensive
sound

system w/head unit in the glove box and he wired a stock radio 'shell'
off/on switch as his fuel pump switch. Hidden right in plain sight.

What do you think would be the easiest kill-switch to rig up? It has
to be one with little likelihood of failing or being bypassed. I'm
thinking of one controlled by a switch hidden under the dash or someplace.

It seems to me there was a thread on this subject, but if there was,
I cant find it in my old mail.

Hi All,

First off, thank you to everyone who has helped a newbie on my 69 yenko
chevelle clone.

first a recap of what I have. I have a 454 77 truck engine, with an M21
Muncie 4 speed. My speedo is not working. I replaced the plastic white
gear and it worked for a minute or two and then stopped working. I had
the car on jacks last week and took some pics of the trans, where the
speedo cable goes and the piece (thing speedo gear goes on). I don't know
if the list takes pics, so I will send them on demand.

I could use some help getting my speedo to work. I'm pretty lost on
whether I have to pull the trans or not. My buddy whose a non-chevy
mechanic (8 hrs away), says that he was told that there could be the wrong
tailshaft on the car. This could be causing the problem or stop the
fixing of it. I have casting numbers on trans and tailshaft if that
helps...

So, sorry for the long winded post, but here are my questions.
1. Do I need to drop the trans to fix the speedo cable?
2. does the tailshaft have to be an EXACT casting # to work on the car?
3. Do I need to pull the trans and rebuild it to get this fixed. (The
only 4 speed guy that comed highly recommend ONLY does full rebulds on the
trans. Don't want to go that route unless absoultely necessary)

3. Help...

  Steve & Tom,

  It's a single point distributor.  It's the
original.  I ordered the car in 1970 and I haven't had any problems until
I started it up this year.  It sat all winter in the garage.  I
rebuilt the original spread bore 750 cfm, tried a Holley Economizer
450 cfm and a new Holley 650 and I still have the same problem.  New
plugs and wires.  Distributor cap and rotor are fairly new.  If you
floor it in park, it picks up and then misses and sometimes back fires
when I advance the timing to about 16*.  It's worse when I set it to
factory specs, 4* but now backfire.  It does the same when you drive it
and floor it.  I did put a new fuel pump on and that didn't help. I guess
I should change the coil next.

WOT ???

Is this an electronic ignition or a points distributor? Are we
talking about a WOT condition at lower RPMs or at high RPMs?

The points used to "float" at high rpm's. The distributor lobe is
basically hitting the points rubbing block so fast that there is no time to
close and therefore trigger the coil to make a spark. That's why racers went
to dual point distributors and magnetos.

I'm not that familiar with Holley's but it's possible or "over carb" an
engine. Are you sure you have the right size for the engine and not some
racing monster?

Usually timing would be what I checked first, and sometimes they like
to be more advanced than factory specs in order to run at highest
performance. If you haven't tried it yet, advance it until it begins to
stumble, then back off a few degrees, (this will usually be where the engine
idles the fastest and smoothest ) then tighten it
down and take it for a test drive.

  Subject: [Chevelle-list] Miss at WOT
  ???

Hi,  Wondering if any of you guys could
offer a suggestion on what could be causing a miss(stumble) at WOT.
  It's a 350 / 300hp original 70 Turbo Fire with a Holly.  It seems
like a miss at WOT and stumbles, bogs down.  I played with the
timing without any results.  I don't it's the carb because I tried 3
different ones and the engine reacts the same with each. Any
  ideas?

  Thanks...tony

I live in one of the western suburbs of Chicago and have a 70 Chevelle 350
with 2 1/2" exhaust, Sanderson Headers, and 40 series Flowmaster mufflers.
I currently have to have the emissions testing done and pass, but with the
new bill I am sure I won't pass. I wonder if they have even thought of
the

large amount of money that people have invested in their cars in their
districts? Does this bill have any grandfather clauses in it to cover the
classic cars or will it be just a across the board ban?

Illinois don't test but in a few counties and only back to 75 I think
anyway. I think they are trying to get after those megaphone mufflers on
those rice burners that are really loud.

I just installed a new exhaust system today on my 69 El Camino. Bet those
Illinois politicians wouldn't like mine.

The sad thing about this whole country is that the issue with
politicians' cute ideas is never whether or not they're violating
people's natural rights (and common sense), but whether or not there
are enough of the group affected to constitute a threat to the
politician's being re-elected. Thus the almost daily petitions and
gathering of protesters' names about everythng under the sun.

not all the time---if your car has a map sensor that controls mixtures---i
had a bad one once and replaced it with new and car was no better --long
story short the map sensor was boxed wrong-belonged in a diff. state and was
for high elevations.

He's probably referring to the thinner air meaning a leaner fuel mixture.
Depending on your local altitude, the difference can be significant.
Years
ago I drove a 73 Buick over Cloudcroft, NM at an altitude of 9000 feet
which

is about 8000 feet above my home's altitude. Car wheezed and coughed like
it wasn't going to make it to the top and it barely did. Made the same
drive a year or so ago in a 2004 Mercury Sable with modern fuel injection
and had no problems whatsoever as the computer controls compensated for
the

altitude.

I'm planning a trip this summer and a friend of mine is cautioning
me that my car may have trouble getting over passes with an
elevation of 10,000 ft. He thinks of my car as an "old car" I guess.

The car has a 350 V-8 with a TH350 automatic. Have any of you ever
heard of anything like he's talking about? Or heard of any car
having this sort of trouble.
