[Chevelle-list] Corvair, not Chevelle

2006-05-08 Thread Dean Vandergriff

Due to a recent death in the family I have a Corvair that I
need to sell. I would love to keep finish it but time space
just wont allow it. The car is a 65 convertible with the
140hp motor with 4 carbs, a powerglide, electric top, a clear title.
I spent more than a few hours cruising around in this one. The car has
been completely disassembled, suspension parts have been sandblasted, metal
prepped, painted with POR15. Inside the wheelwells
floorboard have been cleaned coated with the POR too. Quite a
bit of the body work is done, one rear quarter remains to be welded on.
Everything is there there are some new parts too. We are in
SW Missouri (Carthage).
If anyone is interested, contact me off-list Ill get some
good digital pictures for you. Well entertain all offers.

Thanks,

Dean Vandergriff

By 1965 the handling problems Ralph Nader went on a crusade about

IIRC the rear suspension was redesigned by '65; the earlier design was such
that under certain conditions 1 of the rear wheels could actually lift off the
ground, especially when tire inflation was improper.

And the Monza Spyder was the 150 to 180-hp turbocharged version available
from '62 through '66.

There are quite a few Corvair websites out there.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Corvair ???

2003-01-23 Thread yenkochevelle
I read the Corvair story awhile ago and it was very interesting reading. The
early ones had a few problems like engine would fall out and scrape the
ground and exhaust gas would enter car when heater was in use but this was
all fixed right away. There were handling problems on the 1st generation but
Chevy proved in court using track comparison tests with VW bugs and other
swing axle designs that the Corvair was not worst car on the road.
During the hearings an internal whistle blower sent documents to
Nader that Chevy knew about handling problems and could fix them with sway
bars but said cost per car was too high. I think it was about $10.00. Nader
had cases where people were hurt and killed in roll overs. The trials and
investigations were big news as it was first big time attack of major
corporation on consumer safety issues. There was evidence that Chevy was
using private investigators to follow Nader to get dirt on him. They say
that one reason Chevy does not have any old records is because they
destroyed them to avoid other whistle blower problems.
The Yenko Stinger Corvair won D/P SCCA championship in 1967 beating
factory Triumph Team which was a big deal beating the imports in that class.

Nobody was comparing the two, except to say that they were both known for

Dan,

Your
friend should read his book "Unsafe at any speed". I think the big deal was
engine in the rear and no protection in the front; front end collapsed on
impact. Sorry, that's all this OLD brain can remember right
now.

They are
rear-engine cars and basically hollow in the front. AFAIK Nader's contention
was that they were not safe in an accident for this reason. On top of that, the
rear engine made them fishtail more easily on turns on rainy days, etc, and
people who were not used to handling a rear-engine car sometimes wiped out or
even spun out in them. Finally, they are air-cooled, which makes them bad for
commuter traffic. That's all I can remember OTTOMH.

On a
positive note, they have 4-wheel independent suspension like the Corvette and
transaxles like modern front wheel drive cars. it was pretty innovative for
it's time. I also think they are pretty cool, but I guess they are basically
girl cars to some people.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Corvair ???

2003-01-22 Thread Mach4

I played with a few Corvairs back in the late '60's...I thought then, and
still do, that they were pretty cool cars. Certainly different than our
Chevelles (spelled 'affordable'), but in their own way, they handled good, were
pretty peppy, and had a lot of innovative engineering features. I remember 180hp
- turbocharged or supercharged? - and 140hp with 4 single barrel carbs. Then
there were all kinds of various customizing kits, all the way from mounting one
4-barrel to putting a small block Chevy in the back seat, like a GT-40 or a
Ferrari.

I remember how some of us beat these cars...they were pretty tough. And I
know how Nader slammed them, but I don't recall any ofus having the kinds
of problems with them that they were "famous" for.

Years later, we spun out a Chevy Citation several times before we finally
got rid of it. I know lots of others who did the same thing. But nobody wrote an
"Unsafe At Any Speed" book about them!

  Gents,
A good friend of mine just bought a 1965 Corvair
  Monza.
I am to young to know what the big deal was that
  Nader made about these cars.
Anyone care to school me a bit on
  this?
  Thanks

Chevy Citation - was - RE: [Chevelle-List] Corvair ???

2003-01-22 Thread John Nasta

The Citations
(the only X-body Chevrolet from 1980-85, and the last of them) were known for
spinning out and that is what led to their demise. The X-body was released in
1962 and included the Chevy II and Nova, as well as later Buick Apollo
Skylark, Olds Omega, Pontiac Ventura and Phoenix, and finally the Citation.

Years later,
we spun out a Chevy Citation several times before we finally got rid of it. I
know lots of others who did the same thing. But nobody wrote an Unsafe At
Any Speed book about them!

p.s. the big deal about the X-body is that it was the first Unibody GM
platform.

The corvairs were definitely innovations for their time.

They were fun very different than other cars on the
road at the time. Even with all of their problems, they were good cars in my
opinion, especially compared to some of the junk that Detroit has produced since
then.

I played with a few Corvairs back in the late '60's...I thought then, and
still do, that they were pretty cool cars. Certainly different than our
Chevelles (spelled 'affordable'), but in their own way, they handled good,
were pretty peppy, and had a lot of innovative engineering features. I
  remember 180hp - turbocharged or supercharged? - and 140hp with 4 single
barrel carbs. Then there were all kinds of various customizing kits, all the
way from mounting one 4-barrel to putting a small block Chevy in the back
  seat, like a GT-40 or a Ferrari.

I remember how some of us beat these cars...they were pretty tough. And I
know how Nader slammed them, but I don't recall any ofus having the
kinds of problems with them that they were "famous" for.

And they had great bucket seats that fit lots of different bodys from my first 57 Bel Air to my present 65 Malibu (same #s) even the trim is the same except for only the outside piece being chrome and the inside being painted. All you have to do is recover them in the right pattern.

Seems like we have a lot in common
Dwight.
I wish I'd kept mine too. But then I
wish I'd kept the 67 Chevelle SS, the 69 Chevelle SS, the 68 Charger 440, either
of the 69 RoadRunners on on you get the idea.

When I was 16 my first car was a 65 Corvair Corsa it had 4 carbs
and a 4speed and could really give 283's all they could handle. The speedo
went to 140 I had mine up to 125 got scared that the ft end was
going to lift off. Don't know if it would do 140 but, it was a blast to drive
and back in 67-68 it out cornered almost everything on the road. Wish I still
  had it today.

The Monza was considered the "performance" version.
Although it really wasn't anywhere close to being quick or
fast.

  There
were 2 models. The Monza and the Corsa. One was considered to be more
"deluxe" than the other, but right now I'm not sure which one it
  was.

  I
owned a 65 Corvair Monza convertible a lot of years ago. It had 4 one
barrel carbs a 4 speed. I wish I still had it! It was a pretty good
car. The early ones had a lot of problems but by 65/66 they had worked a
lot of the bugs out of them. I bought mine used (but in excellent
condition) for $800. It would be worth about $10,000
  today.
