ok My age will be showing in this postBUTI have the same problem..!

My son owns a 68 Chevelle and I purchased a basket case (for me) a few
years ago...just to get back into
playing with Non Plastic Cars (Corvettes)... I am progressing right
along...396 has been rebuilt, Trans
also... New front (ouch ) inner and outer fenders and now working on the
rear quarters...(hate to say this
but they are only going to get patch panels..) Anyway I replaced the
springs, and now I have to really
inflate the rear air shocks etc to even come close to leveling the car
out... I have not progressed to the
point yet where I am ready to do play with the cars stance...but why back
in the dark ages (I had a
51 Ford) that I took a torch to the springs and lowered that sucker down to
where it was correct for the
times (late 50s )... course it rode like a fricken buckboard..but was
cool as hell... AND THAT WAS MY PLAN for this car also...the car is only
going to be used as a cruiser, not really all that concerned with
the ride...has anyone used heat in the last 40-50 years to lower a car...?

Just curious...

I haven't cut the coils, but I did install a set of Eibach springs in my
Chevelle a few months ago. They lowered the car approximately 3/4 - 1,
and I've been VERY happy with the improved handling. The ride is not harsh
at all.

Has anyone cut their front coils to lower the nose. I want to lower the
front
end of my wagon about 1-1 1/2 and I've heard people say they've cut one
coil
etc. Has anyone done this and how much did they cut and how much did it
drop.
  Thanks

I gotta agree with Larry on this one. Cutting springs is not the smart
way to go. If you have to lower the car, do it the right way with
new springs...for safety's sake.

Remember it took me years to accumulate these cars ( I am retired) Only
have 2 garages in the back yard regular 24x24 which houses my Chevelle and
my sons Chevelle the other garage is only 24x40
with 3 bays...BUT I have two 4 post lifts on the outer bays so I can park
all 5 Corvetes in it.. The Pickup,
my daily driver, and my wives Mini van sit outside in the weather...

Insurance is not bad... Only runs about $900.00 a YEAR for the entire fleet
(g)..thats 5 Corvettes and
the Chevelle..(American Collector Insurance out of Florida) all with full
coverage, all with NO deductable
BUT each car is limited to 2500 miles a year..(bummer) but heck if I max
one out I just drive another)

On the springs...remember I was only 16 or 17 when I lowered the 51 Ford
and that was in the last 50's
most likely 1959 or 1960..(got out of high school in 1960..) BUT I do not
remember having much trouble
getting each side down the same amount...(ie level)... just heat and let
gravity work...and go slow!

The springs are only about 6 months old. The guy at the spring shop suggested
cutting only 1/2 of a coil but I'm not sure that will give me at least an
inch which is why I'm asking the group.

Mark
I've heard of so many different results from cutting coils, that I
don't believe that there is a single definitive answer. I've heard of 2
people cutting similar springs, the same amount, and getting different
results. If you want to try, I would do no more than 1/4 coil at a
time. It may be a pain, but you stand less chance of overshooting your
mark, or ending up with a harsh ride that bottoms out on every speed
bump.

Cutting the coils should drop the car alright, but if they are old and
sagging, why not replace them with a set of shorter springs and/or dropped
spindles?
Dan (If you cut them, be sure to cut COMPLETE coils only. This will retain
the proper spacing between the two ends.)
