My new Edelbrock 750 doesn't howl as loud as the old Carter AFB I just
retired. But it gives more power. (seat of the pants) Nothin' howls
like a Q-jet!

 Just gettin' my howls in!

Good idea. Sounds like a mixed bag of experiences from different people as
to howl or not to howl.
I will try this.
Thanks.

What I do to test the secondaries of the Holley is take a small paper clip
and bend it so it clips lightly on the rod that connects the vacuum
diaphragm
to the secondary butterfly shaft. Clip it on the rod in a way so after a
test
drive if the secondary opened you will see the clip has moved down the rod.
The clip can't be tight on the rod as it has to slide.

Wow, that's kinda disappointing. I've grown to love the howl of the Edelbrock. I wonder if the Demon does it.

I don't get a howl from either my Holley or Barry Grant when the secondaries
open up.  Never have.
Certainly not like the Quadrajets.

all four barrels do that when the secondaries open, in fact I've never
heard one that didn't (with an open element air cleaner)...I'll ask my
buddy in Michigan who has the same carb and see what he says (my Edelbrock
1406 is the howliest I've ever heard since it doesn't have the flapper
that the other carbs do). You listening Larry???

2002-06-30 Thread Capt Crunch
The secondaries on Quads are very large and are known to make the howl you are referring to by design. The 850 cfm quads (found on many 400,403, & 455  olds/buick/pontiac's, and 472 & 500 Caddys) seem to make the most noise, but it is hard to say for sure. Holleys are designed differently and most have smaller secondaries (I will guess you are running a 650?) and I have never really heard much of a howl with them, but most times all I hear is exhaust :) If you have looked at the bottom of a quad verses the bottom of a 650 Holley you will see the secondaries are larger then the primaries on the quad and the secondaries will be approx. the same size on the Holley 650.   If you really want to see if they are opening all the way grab a buddy and watch as they put the pedal to the floor.   Mikey    - Original Message - From: Mark Weber Sent: Sunday, June 30, 2002 1:31 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-List] Get a howl from a Holley?  While test-driving as part of a reassembly, I am not sure the secondariesare opening on my Holley Street Avenger.  I have an open element aircleaner. In the old days my 400 sb with a quadrajet would really howl when thesecondaries opened up.  It sounded really cool.I don't hear a sound like that now, and I am wondering if the secondariesare opening up at all?  Maybe that sound was specific to that engine orcarb? Can anyone else hear when the secondaries are opened up and the engine isrunning under load?Thanks,Mark71SS-To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.htmlTo start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[Chevelle-List] Get a howl from a Holley?

2002-06-30 Thread Mark Weber

While test-driving as part of a reassembly, I am not sure the secondaries
are opening on my Holley Street Avenger. I have an open element air
cleaner.

In the old days my 400 sb with a quadrajet would really howl when the
secondaries opened up. It sounded really cool.

I don't hear a sound like that now, and I am wondering if the secondaries
are opening up at all? Maybe that sound was specific to that engine or
carb?

Can anyone else hear when the secondaries are opened up and the engine is
running under load?

Thanks,
