I went to Fleet ASW in San Diego in '89 for A school. From there I was in
pipeline training for another year or so before I finally went to the CGC
Sherman, a 378' cutter. Small by comparison, but big enough!

Larry;

It's pretty old.. and I hope Herb is not sensative to this.. but the Navy usually
gives the Coasties a hard time - standard line is -

-- You have to be six foot tall to get in the Coast Guard - That way if the boat
sinks, they can walk back to dry land.. --

The Navy affectionately refers to the Coast
Guard as "Shallow Water Sailors" or my favorite, "Puddle Pirates" which means if
our boat sinks we can walk back to shore as long as we're 6' tall. Navy
guys think it's funny so us Coasties humor them. :)

Hey Eddie,

Thanks! Knife and Fork school is long behind
me, andit won't be LT for about 4 more years! Unfortunately I have to
first endure being a lowly Ensign for about 9 more months, then LTJG for
threeyears or so. I must admit, it'll be worth it in the long
