[Chevelle-List] Manual transmissions
I was reading the postings reference Herb's Richmond 6-speed transmission and thought of a few questions. Does the Richmond 5 and 6 speed transmissions fit into the floor humps of many 50's-60's and early 70's production GM vehicles without modifications? Will the stock console still work? How much torque will they really take? (I thing they rate at 400 foot-pounds in their ads) I have a Doug Nash racing 5 speed sitting in my garage that I ran in my 70 Chevelle for a short time. It was definitely too much for the street so I put a Muncie M-21 back in. If I recall correctly, I had to squeeze it up in the shifter hump and do a little tapping on the floor to make it fit. I don't think I was able to make the console fit either once the installation was complete. I believe the shifter was off-center toward the driver's seat. Who carries the best overdrive manual transmission that has a high torque rating and fits in the vehicle with a relatively stock appearance (no floor modifications and works with console)? I read an article about a (ugh) modified Ford Tremec 5 speed overdrive transmission built by Forte's transmissions back east. The article said it was a beefed up top-loader with three choices for shifter positions. Additionally, they gave it a 475 foot-pound torque rating. Does anybody out there have any ideas or have any experience with this Tremec TKO transmission? I was thinking of putting it in my 55 Belair if it can handle a ZZ502 (567 foot-pounds) and maybe eventually getting one for the Chevelle if it keeps everything stock looking inside. Thank you. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Bob, I think all Muncie trans have the same bell housing bolt pattern and length (assume you have a M21?). I do know that in 69, they changed the way the arms attach to the trans. Pre 69 used bolts through the arms into the trans, 69 and later had studs on the trans and the arms were held by nuts. I have a 69 M20 (wide ratio) in my 67 SS w/396 w/2:52 1st gear and 3.07 rear-end. I don't race mine and with the higher rear-end gear, it helps to get the car moving easier. I bought my Hurst shifter in two parts...the shifter kit is for a 69 Muncie and the tower kit was for my 67 w/console. Hurst has online .PDF catalogs at http://www.mrgasket.com/hurst.htm that you can find anything you need. Just watch the way the arms attach to the trans and Hurst can set you up with the correct Shifter kit and tower kit. [Chevelle-List] Manual Transmissions...interchangability ???
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Ok I do own a couple of Chevelles... Both 68's 396's so this is slightly on topic for this group However my question centers around my 64 Corvette which I am thinking of swapping out the Close Ratio 4 speed and replacing it with a Wide Ratio 4 speed. The car is a 327 365 HP solid lifter CORRECT car (which I am not into really). BUT it has a 3.08 rear and honestly it does kick ass once you get it rolling...comes alive at about 2400 RPM and stays right on the power curve up until 6300 RPM ... But it sure is not a hole shot car...in fact it is the only car that I have to feed it gas to even get it rolling...can't just slowly let out the clutch. Current correct trans has a 2.20 1st wheras the wide ratio has a 2.54 1st (I think)swapping out the transmission would give me much more bottom end without loosing much at the top... BECAUSE I really do not cruise above 100 MPH all that much... Played with the idea of just swapping the rear gears(but I figure a used wide ratio Trans would be both cheaper (and a heck of a lot easier to swap) then the rear...(Vettes are sometimes a pain..) So the big question... what year(s) wide Ratio Trans will bolt up to the car... and from what makes can I expect to find one...
