You are absolutely right about spy ware. And the program you are talking
about is called Ad-Ware. I have it and run it all the time. Pop - Stopper is
not spy ware. I am very paranoid about someone accessing my computer from
the internet. I also use cookie pal and Norton Security. Zone Alarm is a
free firewall. Do you think this is spyware? It's free.

For What it's worth, I do not agree that turning off scripting or Java
or
any other features on your browser is a good idea. You will miss a great
deal of the new technology and will not be able to fill out some forms,
etc.

Rather, what I think everyone is dealing with is called spyware. When
you
download free software, they will stick a little piece of code into your
registry files and a lot of other places and these spys collect
information on your habits and report back to the owner of the spyware.
You
may have heard of cookies that do the same thing, but cookies are not
hidden and you can edit them out.

There is a company called Lavasoft that has developed spyware detection
and
will provide you a means of cleaning up your computer. Yes, it is free,
and
I have no idea why it is free, but it works. If you do not believe me,
then
go to your search tool and put in the word spyware and you will turn up
hundreds of sites saying how good this product works.

I have a son that uses KaZaA software and it has loaded up over 40
separate
spys before he is done using it.

You can download a free copy of Ad-aware at:

 http://www.lsfileserv.com/index.html

I have used it for over a year. Once you remove all the spys from your
computer, you will find the popups disappear or are reduced to
practically
nothing. Also, clean up your cookie files from Netscape and clear
everything out of one called Temporary Internet Files from Internet
 Explorer.

After that, you will think you have a new computer!

IMO you are better off just turning off scripting in your browser.

You can also get uninstaller software made by Mcafee. It will eliminate the
traces of old programs and clean up your system. Some of the free software
will leave junk on your system even after you uninstall it but the
uninstaller software made by Mcafee is supposed to eliminate the junk.

I also would like to assist my fellow list members on this subject. I agree
with Rich, and I. M. Shrejk below. These guys know what they are talking
about. There are some bad people out there that will mess with us if they
can. We should all be running:

1. A good Anti-virus program and update it DAILY (Symantec's Norton AV is
the best in my opinion)
2. A personal firewall such as Zone Alarm (free), Norton, or Black Ice
3. Ad removal software - Ad Aware is the best so far and it is free.

Symantec makes a nice product called Internet Security that you can get (on
sale) at around $39. It has a personal firewall, the anti-virus program and
a privacy manager. The privacy manager watches for things that you program
in like social security numbers and bank account numbers to make sure they
aren't being sent from your computer without you knowing about it. Nothing
is perfect, but some protection is much better than none. You would still
want to run Ad Aware even with this to protect from being tracked.

The pop-up remover is a nice to have that may also provide some
protection. If you disable Java, it will protect you some as stated, but it
may also cause you to lose functionality such as some live chat programs and
others. You can adjust and fine tune security options to your level of need
for functionality by clicking on your Internet Explorer and clicking on
TOOLS then OPTIONS then SECURITY.

If you are wondering what to turn off and leave on, go with higher security
settings and adjust back down if it's preventing you from doing something
you really want to do. Try using the ask me option called prompt in
there instead of just allowing anything until you are comfortable with what
you should allow and what not to. I run on medium security on Java and can
still do what I want to on the net.

You can get most, if not all of the above software at www.download.com

Now, fill er up, put on the seat belt, give it some gas and pop the clutch,
we're cruisin the net in a Muscle Machine!

 Steve
