John,
I think you are doing the right thing. I can take that Elky off your hands
right now for $500 if you can deliver to Roanoke, VA. :)

Give that all the consideration it deserves.

So anyway, yes, I want to sell both of my cars and related items.

I'm going to call Hagerty for insurance on the Olds so that I can take it
out on sunny Sundays and also to give it a good going over. I just took it
off my regular insurance a couple of weeks ago. That car never fails to
cause people to shout out "do you want to sell it?"

I am going to finish the work that the El Camino needs to be roadworthy,
most likely including the replacement of the floor pans, and I will have it
buffed out. I seriously doubt that I will have it repainted though. It is
decent looking and mechanically and cosmetically everything is brand new, so
I should be able to get a half-decent price for it.

Neither of these cars was ever my "dream car" so I don't mind selling them.
I'm sure I'll have another old car at another time. The El Camino did make
me ask myself why I am pouring so much money into cars that I don't need
when I don't own a house. I had a nice house once before and I'd like to
stop paying rent and take advantage of the low interest rates. It's a
practical decision, and I think that for once in my life even my dad would
say that I'm doing the smart thing. I still love the old cars but I think I
should be concentrating on the bigger issues first and then come back to my
frivolous hobbies.

2003-06-12 Thread John Nasta
When I said it was a "frivolous" hobby that was a joke. Hobbies are supposed
to be frivolous, or at any rate, you're not supposed to worry about whether
or not they are practical. For 5 years I have not worried about how much I
spent on cars, and I've enjoyed them the whole time. I'm not begrudging the
money because it has been fun and has helped me to keep my mind off other
things. Right now I live in an apartment and rent garages though. It costs
me $300/month in rent just to garage 2 cars. I also have to work on my cars
in the street, and anything I start has to be finished in time to put the
car away.

Anyway, I still love the old cars and I have bought and sold plenty of them
over the years, and there isn't a single one that I feel I shouldn't have
sold. As someone else said, the important thing is to enjoy them while you
have them.

So, back to your regular programming. I guess I just got a big reaction
because of the El Camino just being painted. I'm not the first person on
this list to write in to say that I want to sell my car, and I didn't think
it would cause such a ruckus.

John: I don't know how old you are but your plan is admirable and the mature thing to
do. It will serve you well in the future. When you buy your "garage", make sure it
has a house attached to it. LOL. You are correct to take advantage of today's low
interest rates. I've never seen nor envisioned this in my lifetime and when they
start up again, all hell may break loose! As long as these are not your dream cars,
you'll get over it. I'm sure when you get settled in your house/garage, you'll buy
another old car. Maybe the next one will be your "Dream Car"! One thing I don't
agree with you on is calling this hobby "frivolous". Enjoyed sincerely and done
properly, not taking anything away from family and obligations in life, there is much
to say about the pure satisfaction about owning & working on old cars. Some people
collect coins or stamps. Some play golf. Some just drink or gamble. I like my old
car. And from the looks, comments and drools I get whenever I take !
it out, so do alot of others!! Good luck to you. Look me up at North East next week
if you're there.

I think with the previous issues of the car not turning out right,
people have misinterpreted your post as you getting rid of the cars and
buying a house. I think if you had said you were buying a house and
decided to sell the cars a month ago, nobody would have thought this.

All that said, buying a house is the best way to keep with the car
hobby. After all, you can't usually rebuild an engine or do a body off
in an apartment car port! Buy the house, build some equity, and buy
that next project car!

John, I totally agree with you. A house is a much better investment than an
older car, and a house is something you can have the rest of your life to
cherish and enjoy. Plus, the intrest rates are incredibly low right now,
and this is the BEST time to buy a home. I'm not against you selling your
car at all! My dad has had 20 old cars growing up, and he doesn't regret
selling any of them, because he had a lot of fun with them. There's old
cars all over the place, and you will be able to get another one any time
you want. If you feel like this is the right time to sell your cars to buy
a home, by all means, go right ahead! Your 455 Olds will get you a lot of
money!

Best Wishes,
Chad

Well, I'll suck up my previous comments, and say that ya gotta do what ya
gotta do. If buying the house is what you gotta do, then do it. Good luck
with it, I've been there, and it's a pain in the rear, with all the forms
and what not. One day, you will buy that "Special" ride, and then you will
have the house, and the classic. Ah, the bliss. Anyway, keep up the posts
on this list. You always seem to have positive inputs, and just 'cuz you
don't have the Elky, doesn't mean you can't stay a major player on the list.

Reading all the posting's from all ya'll, keeps me happy. There's not too
many Chevelle guy's/gal's up here in the Last Frontier. So I turn to ya'll

Well, in the last 5 years I saved 3 cars that all were probably headed for
doom, so I don't think it would be fair for anybody to suddenly say that I'm
against the hobby. I'd like to get the best house that I can though and
concentrate on the business right now. Hopefully the next time I'm ready to
buy an old car it will be one that is really special and will either already
be or it will turn out to be better than any of the scads of old cars I've
already owned. I had a chance to buy a 1968 Hurst/Olds a few years ago, but
the seller backed out. While I realize that this is the Chevelle list, my
point is that if I had a really special car like that, I wouldn't be selling
it, but these are two pretty run-of-the-mill old cars no matter how good
they look. Anyway, I don't want be to think that I'm suddenly on hard times

everybody is telling me not to, which frankly is a little weird to me, but I

But, John, you sell classic car parts for a living (Is this right)?
And you will give up 2 Classic cars for a house (built with bricks
from Mexico) & drive a To-Yo-Yo?

We have all had troubles with our Classic cars & many buy parts from
you, "if" they gave up, well your orders would go way down.

I have 3 now, yes they can be a pain in the butt, getting parts,
bad paint jobs, bad "New" parts, bad "Crate Motors".

But I will tell you this John, I would live in a trailer in a trailer
park & be on the Jerry Springer show BEFORE I would give up my Classics!
And I don't sell Classic car parts.

[Chevelle-List] RE: FS - 1968 Ninety Eight convertible & possibly 1969 El Camino

2003-06-11 Thread John Nasta
