Mark, I don't know if your looking for more info on the SS. But I ran across
this site and thought it may be helpful to anyone trying to determine a real
SS.Starts at 1968 through 1987.

Thanks to all for the SS info. So, unless you have the build sheet,
protecto-plate or the original invoice, anyone could put together a clone
and
pass it off as an original SS.
 Correct?
 Thanks,
 Mark

Another exception is on 1969 Chevelles with original trim tags for Monaco
Orange or Daytona Yellow. These two colors were only available on SS or COPO
Chevelles. Also if you have the original engine with the vin stamped on it
and that engine was only available in an SS that will show the car to be a
real SS. You have to watch out for re-stamped engines and repro trim tags.

Absolutely,
but you need the knowledge of what the ss options were also, i know for the
1972 ss pkg Z15, the items are, black grill with SS in center and Bright
outline molding, Special domed hood with lock pins, Left Hand remote
controlled sport mirror, 15x7 sport wheels,F60x15 white lettered bias belted
ply tires, power front disc brakes, sport suspension, these items are of the
SS equipment (Z15) distinctive features

OK, a little more info. It is a 72 and it seems there is a Malibu logo on
the right and left fenders. I don't remember this on my 71. Is it something
they did in 72 or is this a clue that it's a clone.
Still looking for that 71-2 SS convert.

Mark,
The 72 SS models never had Malibu markings on the fenders, unless for some reason they were put on it and the SS was taken off.I have been away and did not take the time to read all the responses you have gotten from the list. If you want you can e-mail me off the list with the details if you still need help trying to ID the car you are looking at.

It's my understanding that after 1968 the SS was no longer included in the
VIN.

Mark,
1966-68 the SS was a separate model depicted by the
vin, from 1969-72 the SS became an option package, and
the only way to tell proof positive it is an SS, is to
have the build sheet or pop that came with the car
when purchased new, an exception is in 1972 the 454
could only be ordered in the SS package, and the
engine codes CPA,CRX,CRN,CRW, were the one's that came
on the SS. so from 69-72 the vin tells nothing about
it being an SS or not.

OK in my search for a 71-72 SS convertible, I have
run across a little bit of
confusing information. Could you order a Chevelle
SS and a Malibu with SS
options? I am looking at a car and the owner says
that if you check the VIN,
it shows up as a malibu convertible. Would this be
 considered a clone?
Supposedly all the SS stuff came with the car when
 it was ordered. If I
 recall, weren't 71 and 72 years where you couldn't
tell if it is an SS from
 the VIN?
 TIA

With one exception in 72. IF you had a chevelle with the engine code of W in the
VIN (8th place) it HAD to be an SS, because the 454 (code W) was ONLY available in the
SS in 72.

BTW - A co-worker has a W code 72 SS for sale - if anyone is interested.
