Hey Keith, think of it as a lesson rather than a mistake. At $40 it was also
a relatively inexpensive lesson compared to some in this hobby.

Thanks for the information. Yes I did break the tabs during the first
installation of the transmission. Yes the tabs drive the oil pump for the
tranny. When installing the transmisson, it was not bolting up right, so we
pulled it back and turn the torque converter and it fell inside the tabs. I
drove the car home with no problems, other than the camshaft going out (two
exhaust lobes wiped out). I was reinstalling the front seal because it was
leaking when I saw that the tabs were broken. I am not sure when the tabs
broke, could I felt the converter slip down into the tabs, but they did
break. So there it is, I made a big mistake. I cost me $40.00 to get fixed
at a transmisson place in Daytona Beach here. Thanks for all the information
on this problem and all the other help and advise this group has given me.
Hope I one day I will get all the problem fixed and I can drive this car.

Kieth,
those tabs drive the front pump providing the pressure to the entire trans.
You should deffinatly not try to run it or you might also smoke the clutches
because there is no fresh fluid being pumped through. A replacement pump
might be in ored or a new pump gear. hope this helps.

The tabs allow the torque converter to drive the pump in the
transmission. If they're broken off the pump won't work and, needless to
say, neither will the transmission.

If the notches in the torque converter aren't lined up with the tabs in
the pump when the trans is bolted to the engine they will be broken from
the pressure of trying to bolt everything together..I won't
go into how I learned this the hard way a long time ago.

I wish I had better news for you.

Unfortunately, what I know about transmissions fits inside a thimble, but my
guess is that if those tabs are broken off, you're not going anywhere.
Hopefully somebody else can give you a more astute and assured answer.

The torque convertor has two slot which slide onto two metal tabs, these
tabs are broken off.

[Chevelle-List] auto transmission question

2001-11-17 Thread Keith Cooper

The torque convertor has two slot which slide onto
two metal tabs, these tabs are broken off. I was replacing the front
transmission seal in my 1971 Chevelle automatic and found the two metal tab
pieces sitting there. What function do these tabs serve? Do they drive an
oil pump or something? Are these indexing tabs?
Help? I wanted to start the car today but now have
this new problem.
