Re: [Chevelle-list] 10 bolt strength?

In the end it isn't really the hp that is a problem. It is the amount of torque and larger stickier tires. I assume we are talking a 8.2 10 bolt? If you just run plain radial tires (no drag radials) and drive on the street I would have no worries about it. I wouldn't race one at the track with a BFG DR or better tireon it without aftermarket axles and a girdle, but then you could probably last ok for a while depending on combo, tire size, and track prep. What is generally considered the maximum horsepower
and gear limits for a ten bolt rear end? I've got a 69 chevelle with
a 10 boltopen gearand I'd like to have a posi installed and some
lower gears but I don't want to spend the money on the ten bolt rearif it
can't handle (small block)375 horsepower and ~3.70 gears. Thanks
guys! Todd in Idaho.

It can handle that no problem. I know guys that put 500 to those rears and they hold up fine. Now if it were a big block, that would be a different story. They don't seem to be able to handle the torque that big block puts out.
