[Chevelle-list] 3 speed 396
Hi, I have a 69 chevelle that is stock with a 6 cyl. 3 speed saginaw, I have a 396 that will replace the 6 cyl. and I was wondering if anyone knew whether the 3 speed would work with my 396 long enough for me to find a 4 speed? Or should I not bother and just wait? Thanks in advance! Don Allen 1969 Chevelle http://home.carolina.rr.com/donallen

Don I'd wait unless you are very anxious to get it on the road - and who isn't. Remember that the spline count on your 6 cylinder tranny input shaft may be different than the 4 spd will have. Then you'd have to buy a second clutch too. RE: [Chevelle-list] 3 speed 396
Don, My Elky came with the same thing.6 cyl/ 3spd on the tree. I put a 350 in it and kept the 3 speed. Good news, flywheel worked,. The Saginaw had no holes in the tailshaft for a shifter so I used an POS Indy shifter. Bottom line is. The shifter sucks, can't stand the 3 spd anymore, and I CAN'T WAIT to put the 700R4 in. It may work for a while, but you will learn to hate it.
