Thanks everyone for all the help, if you are curious it was a module, i had a spare on hand and when i have time i will take it in and have it tested - just to see,,, someone told me that usually a coil will not burn out completely (will usually have some spark in it- but not enough to fire the engine- i had none) also i was told that turning on the ignition and holding a soldering gun (not iron) next to the cap and pulling the trigger will make the car fire and then you know its not your module.. also the rotor can fail with no visual signs and ground out your spark without sending it to the plugs-- but i did not try any of this i had the module out before i learned any of this... also heard that the pick-up plate can go bad too-? harlan ** A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. YOUR PROBLEM IS EITHER THE IGNITION MODULE OR THE PICK-UP COIL. BOTH OF THESE ITEMS ARE UNDER THE CAP. I HAVE HAD BOTH ITEMS FAIL ON ME, AT DIFFERANT TIMES. GOOD LUCK PAUL --- On Thu, 7/16/09, Jim H. Harlan, I've seen both but I will say I always kept a spare module in my ash tray as I seemed to burn them every yr or two before eliminating it with an MSD 6AL. I kept a spare coil on hand as well but don't remember having a factory one leave me stranded. My first thought would be module. Local parts store can test it for you as well as coil. Walt was running fine the other day, and today it will not start, the engine is a 454 1973 mostly stock, it turns over but will not sputter or start, checked for fuel, it looks ok, i hooked up a spark checker at 30 thousands and saw no spark while cranking, changed to 20 and still did not see anything, it is a HEI, and i checked and have 12V at the Batt term on the dist dist module? coil? thanks!! Could be either or Autozone or most any other of the National Chains can bench check your module. It will need to come out of the distributor, but the test is reasonably accurate. If you are not getting any spark, it should be easy to detect a bad module. And you can check continuity of the coil with a meter. Again if it is the culprit it should be obvious.
