  Hi Herb,

  I have a 66 138 car that had a SB/ 4
spd in it when I bought it.  Don't know what happen to the BB,,
I had a 66 396 that came out of parts car so I am putting that back in the
  66.  The 396 has the oil pressure line brass fitting that comes out
about 1 inch and then turns upward. The z bar is hitting it, thought about
taking the z bar and cutting the arm off moving it over the 3/4" I need
and welding it back( but I have already powdercoated it).  I was
hoping somone might know what the difference is, I looked in the parts
book, but no picture of the two part numbers. Thanks for the
information, may be easier to figure out a new fitting.  Really
enjoy the list, great information and people on the list. I have
been lurking for about 3 months, this was my first post.  David

Hi
David,

When I first got my Elky it was a six cylinder w/ a three
speed.  When I swapped in the big block, I reused the original
z-bar.  I recently bought a big block z-bar and the only difference
between the two is the arm that goes to the clutch fork is bent back toward
the rear of the car compared to the six z-bar that is straight.
Neither one of them hit my oil pressure sender. HTH.

If you haven’t reassembled the 396
yet, you can tap into the oil galley at the front bottom left of the block just
above the pan rail.  See photo at http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/396guy/oil_pressure_port_small.jpg
You almost have to pull the allen-head plug just after the block has been
dipped to get it free but it can be used.  The photo had a brass plug when
it was taken but I used it for a second oil pressure source.

Thanks for the relies, I have several z bars they are all the same,
probably for a sb, I was hoping some one would know what the physical
difference between the two part numbers.  The one I am using to go back
in my 66 is hitting the oil pressure fitting. Thanks again  David

Part numbers are
different – 283/327 #3840836 and 396 #3872895 according to my circa 1972
Chevrolet parts book.  Might physically interchange but there’s
obviously some difference.
