Re: [Chevelle-list] Disc Brake Swap

2011-01-27 Thread Tom Rightler
G body brakes are barely adequate enough for one of those cars let alone
a heavier Chevelle. It would be much easier to simply convert your drum
spindles, order new backing plates, caliper brackets, and go buy the
rotors, bearings & seals, and loaded calipers at NAPA.
The other option is go to a junkyard and find a 9C1 caprice or Impala SS
and yank the spindle assemblies off it and use the Camaro 1LE rotors.

Quick question to you guys, I am going to be putting front discs on the
71 in the next little while, I have heard of guys using g body spindles,
do they bolt straight up? No I am not even thinking about a brake kit
yes it is easier but not cheaper and I have a budget set for this car, I
plan on being able to sell it for a little profit
<http://mail.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/18.gif> , plus access
to a couple G bodies. Anyway any info would be great.

I put 75 Nova spindles on my 65 with a ball joint and tie rod kit from HO
Specialties. I had a Nova parts car for free. Now there are so many kits out
there it is not worth the effort. There is a slick 2 inch drop spindle that
is tall like the Nova spindle and uses stock GM caliper etc.

not sure what the caliper baskets are, but it was the rear F body discs I was talking about.  They are a direct bolt on to 10 & 12 bolt axles without any modifications.  I'll be doing this upgrade to my 70 when I eventually get another 12 bolt and rebuild it, then I'll be doing the B-Body 12" rotor upgrade also.

Hey Tom,

Reason I was wondering is cause I have access to all those parts wholesale. LOL
Called my local salvage yard that we do alot of business with and I could buy those calipers for about 60 dollars each and I can get the rotors brand new aftermarket for about 45 dollars each. called my GM dealer and brand new GM calipers were 110 dollars for one side and 130 for the other, dont know why one was higher than the other. I think the baskets for the calipers were like 30 bucks each. would like to see what kinda brackets he was talking about though.

Not without a lot of work.  Stick with 69-72 A-body
GM.
