Re: [Chevelle-list] Engine Paint

2005-12-14 Thread Larry Shouse

I just did as it said on their website - one coat
of POR15 as a basecoat, followed by the POR engine paint 4 hours later. I did
put a second coat on after that, but the stuff is thick, and once the engine ran
up to operating temp during my dyno runs, its a pretty tough finish. I'm happy
with it.

That sounds like a good solution.  Their website sells Chevrolet
Orange for $19 per pint, enough to do an engine.

If you go with POR, invest a few extra bucks in their primer ( I forget what its called).  The silver stuff as I recall.   The engine paint goes on very thin and it will take several coats to fill in all of the rough casting areas.  I think that I had to put on 4 or 5 coats to get rid of the 5 o'clock shadow.   Having said that its been 6 or more years and I don't have any issues with its durability.

Plasti-Kote seems to hold color & covers better than the Dupli-color. My
motor was originally painted with the D-C paint & it faded considerably in
a year. The P-K has been on for a year & looks just like new. I don't
have any experience with any of the POR products, so I can't comment on them.

IMO you'll be better off with the Plasti-kote brand.

I POR'd mine at least 6 years ago, maybe a couple more than that. And I've put 40k mi on it.    I don't have any issues with durability and holding its color.   I would however use the POR primer first.   It took me several coats to fill in all of the rough casting "valleys".   I believe that the primer is a bit thicker and will fill in those "valleys"  so that the POR will cover in 1 or 2 coats.
